I can't find the old thread on this, but I stumbled across the source I was remembering about this massive controversy.

As most of you know, in the DVD commentary for "Shindig," episode writer Jane Espenson says that she made up actual rules for the "Tall Card" chore poker game. And that they were posted on the official website (which I doubt because I never saw them posted).

Anyway, apparently Adam Baldwin remembers it differently. He posted several times in the thread below on the Fox Boards and didn't refute this...

Lux Lucre, on his meeting with Adam Baldwin and Alan Tudyk, 5/26/03:

Quote:

Oh another things I learned too, which has always been something I tried to ask Adam online but he never would answer.
How was that card game in Shindig played.

Answer: It was made up, no rules were made for it, it was just faked to give the idea that this was a gambling game.

So, rules or no rules? You decide.

Both are possible. The writer may have researched possible gambling card games in an Anglo-Sino culture (like pai gow poker or long pai http://www.fireflywiki.org/Firefly/TallCard ) and adapted that for her part of the creative process but when it came to the exigencies of shooting, the actors just needed to create the appearance of gameplay, so no need to burden the luvvies with too much information.

An unsolicited lifestyle tip: never gamble with actors.
