Not content with reviewing movies on BBC television, radio and in the printed media - Mark Kermode the UK's answer to Roger Ebert, also has a video blog where he interacts with the audience.

This week, two topics - the second of which is Firefly and Serenity - which he liked a lot :)

It is, like so many reviews, another reminder of what we already know. Great show. Great movie. Thanks for sharing.

Firefly is a spreading pandemic of fun.

RIPWASH

It's the one thing that really confuses me about "Serenity". From what I can tell on Rottentomatoes.com it got very favorable reviews overall (81% is really decent). Audiences that did see it, loved it. That being the case, why wouldn't Universal let Joss have a go at a second movie? Isn't there a way to show them the amount of sales of all the DVD's combined with the Box Office would make the movie pretty profitable for them?

I would LOVE a Serenity 2 movie, even though Wash wouldn't be in it

Mal: You think she'll hold together?
Zoë: She's torn up plenty, but she'll fly true.
Mal: Could be bumpy.
Zoë: Always is

It has been postulated that Joss is waiting to buy the rights to Firefly outright. Can anyone confirm this and the timeline for doing so?

SUASOR

In quite recent statements, Joss said he was just waiting for some studio suit to give him the money to do Serenity 2.

As far as I ever saw, Serenity did nothing more than break even at the box office, which means with advertising costs, etc., it would still have been a bit behind in recouping its production costs. That said, though, the DVD sales alone should have put it over the top, to say nothing of the money they got from having it on USA, TNT, Sci-Fi, and whatever pay channels they sold it to.

And this in no way connects to the money Fox/Universal would make from DVD sales of Firefly box sets at this point, since we all know that a great number of people who saw Serenity THEN went out and bought Firefly on DVD.

Soooo... having said all that, it seems pretty clear that Serenity should be, as we say, into the black at this point.

Now I've laid the groundwork for my argument in favor of more Firefly and/or Serenity, and it's an argument in terms even the simplest of studio execs can understand: MONEY! Every sequel at this point (within reason, at least) will feed the legend. A new sequel begets interest in the earlier movies and show, and drives sales of more copies of each. And licensing... talk to George Lucas about licensing sometime, if you can catch him when he's not too busy counting out fat stacks of $1000 bills! :)

It's never made much sense to me; the second Serenity went from break-even to profitable, that sequel should have been in the works. The studio HAS TO know how dedicated we fans are to this 'verse. They know, at a minimum, that they're going to have X number of guaranteed sales with each new iteration - and that's ONLY if they count on NOT creating any new fans with each new outing.

But who's to say how the mind of a studio exec works...
