Nathan's wearing a brown coat tonight :)

Has anyone else noticed other Firefly references from this show?

Yeah, yeah - but did you see the part where he grimaced? SQUEE!

BUT SERIOUSLY, I enjoy this show more than I care to admit, 'cause Nathan and Ms. Katic (and the rest of the cast, for that matter) do such an admirable job of selling what is frankly some pretty pedestrian material.

What I was tickled by this week was Nathan's Christopher Walken impersonation. There's a sort of trademark feature of Mr. Walken's speech where he raises his voice so that it cracks slightly. Most impersonators I've heard overdo that feature to death. I don't know that Nathan's was perfect, but I thought it was pretty good (and certainly better than my Walken).

What would Rorschach do?

Nathan's Walken was pretty darn funny.

I have to admit, though, that I think it a bit funny that people go into hysterics whenever they see Nathan in a brown coat or jacket or when he says something even remotely similar to a Firefly quote. Someone made a post that the episode where he and his daughter were fencing made the sequence a Firefly shout-out. I beg to differ. They were fencing. Father and daughter having fun. No quips about her being to fast or about him being a great man. So, IMHO, NOT a Firefly reference. I mean let's face it. Right now, he needs to support "Castle". That's where his paycheck is coming from and we need to support him NOW as Richard Castle, not Mal. Appreciate Mal and hope for Mal's return obivously, but not be looking for hidden "Firefly-isms" or Mal qualities in Richard Castle.

I admire Nathan for the great actor he obviously is. If he says something that reminds me of Firefly I smile and appreciate it as coincidence. Until someone can tell me or show me otherwise, that's where I stand.

Not that Fox or Universal would EVER allow it to happen, but it WOULD be fun to see a Serenity or Firely poster on the wall in Castle's apartment or in his daughter's room. Or see gilmpses of a Firefly rerun on a tv in the background. THAT would be cool.

Mal: You think she'll hold together?
Zoë: She's torn up plenty, but she'll fly true.
Mal: Could be bumpy.
Zoë: Always is

The biggest FF shoutout is just letting Nathan be Nathan. Without all that weird FutureSpeak TM.

Det. Becket: What is it with men and boobs? Those are obviously not real.

Castle: Santa's not real but we still love opening his presents.

I agree that not everything Nathan says is a homage to other Joss shows but there have been more than a few lines which cannot be denied.

Also, I guess I'm the only one that didn't like his Walken. The 2 best Walken impersonations I have seen both came from SNL. One by castmember Jay Mohr, the other by host Kevin Spacey. The latter's performance of Walken auditioning for Star Wars is still one of the greatest moments in SNL history.

I guess the Walken impersonation was one of those things where it was meant as a joke, that it was supposed to be horrible, but it was actually halfway decent!

Jay Mohr doing Walken and the Psychic Friends hotline was one of the funniest things I've seen.

Mal: You think she'll hold together?
Zoë: She's torn up plenty, but she'll fly true.
Mal: Could be bumpy.
Zoë: Always is

AMEN!!!

People are reading WAY too into some of the stuff on this show. It's starting to make me a little embarrassed to be a browncoat. People are going into the John Hinckley fan territory here.

The NASA thing for example. People act as if Joss coined the term "Serenity". Just because someone hears serenity doesn't mean they're going to link it to some show that was on fox years ago.

We would all love more serenity/firefly stuff but the more you shove it down peoples throats the more turned off people are going to get.

I'm gonna check out Mohr and Spacey - I've never seen or heard their Walken. And I'd watch Spacey recite his laundry list (he's just...that...good).

Re Nathan's Walken: I'll grant it's not the best I've ever heard, but it's far from the worst. I suppose it's possible I'm giving him points not for a great Walken, but a clearly good Walken...or at least an all right Walken...

Haha actually I started that thread. But since I went off-topic with the Faith reference, I thought I'd start a new one specifically for Mal-like caharcteristics. Although Richard Castle is clearly very different from Mal, it's always fun to find those easter eggs (even if they're not supposed to be easter eggs ).
