Hope this is an okay to post this.

I was thinking of this recently - on the Firefly DVD commentaries there's mention of actors who have made 'Joss Whedon Hat Tricks' - appearing in each of the 3 Joss properties at the time: Buffy, Angel, and Firefly, usually with a different character in each.

Well, now we have 2 different and uniquely Joss 'shows' to play with - okay, Doctor Horrible was really just a short movie, but we can't leave it out, and Dollhouse has had a (short) season and is set for more! So who else has made a hat trick, counting these? Has anybody gotten beyond a hat trick to a FOURTH Joss show?

Here's what I've got so far:
Nathan Filion: Malcolm Reynolds on Buffy, Caleb the Preacher on Buffy, Captain Hammer on Doctor Horrible.
Eliza Dushku: Qualified, as she played the same role of Faith LeHane on Buffy and Angel. (And guest starred as 'Buffy' on time, but that's a stretch.) And Echo/Caroline/all her imprints only counts as one role.
Felicia Day: Vi on 'Buffy', Penny on Doctor Horrible, and she just squeaks in if we count the unaired 'Epitaph One' episode of Dollhouse, where she apparently played 'Mag'.

I can't have gotten everybody, can I? Anybody else want to play??

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Well, Summer Glau appeared first on Angel for one episode, then she was River in Firefly, and by all accounts she will be on Dollhouse next season. Not sure if that counts just yet.
There's no longer anyone in existence who's been in every single Joss Whedon property, though. The tiny cast of Dr. Horrible kind of precluded that possibility. So I kind of wonder if there are any official 'hat tricks' anymore. Hmmmm....

I am sooo bad with names, but better with faces.

So: Johnathan whazzizname (Tracy/psychology vamp on Buffy, manager of W&H science dept on Angel)

Whatshisface Whozzat (Angel/Buffy/Dobson on Firefly)

Herself Herself (Fred on Angel, Whiskey on Dollhouse, and I would swear I saw her in at least a walk-on or minor role somewhere in Buffy)

Wossname Tipofthetongue (Jubal Early, and at least one role on Buffy or Angel, possibly both.. I think...)

Then there's the people who kept getting used over and over as extras or bit parts, some people with two roles but not the full hat trick, and people you KNOW you've seen on things outside the Jossverse but can't quite place them.

Basically it seems like if they've worked with you and liked working with you, you will have work when they have it to offer. Not a bad deal, really.

Well, for this I'm taking 'official hat tricks' as being appearances in 3 or more of the titles. At the time, that was 'every single Joss Whedon property', but in sports, a hat trick is always about doing something three times.

The first two are established hat tricks from the days of firefly - Jonathan Woodward and Carlos Jacott. The third known hat trick from that era I believe is Andy Umberger, who was the take-himself-apart doctor on Angel, D'Hoffryn the demon on Buffy, and the captain of an Alliance ship in the Firefly BDP (Big Damn Pilot.)

Amy Acker does not qualify officially, unless you have proof of an uncredited cameo on Buffy. (She was mentioned in the seventh season in reference to Willow's crossover, but didn't appear then.) Jubal Early was played by Richard Brooks, who apparently has not been in anything else of Joss' - I see no credits for Buffy or Angel from him.

Both Amy and Richard appeared in 'Drive', which starred Nathan Fillion and was created by Tim Minear - but that doesn't count. ;)

ZEEK

Marti Noxon was in Buffy, Angel and the news woman in Dr. Horrible I believe.

Hmmm checked imdb

depends on if you count:
"Angel" .... 'Cordy' Theme Singer (1 episode, 2002)
... aka "Angel: The Series" (USA: long title)
- Birthday (2002) TV episode (voice) (uncredited) .... 'Cordy' Theme Singer

I didn't know Malcolm Reynolds was in Buffy. What season?

Seventh season, four episodes near the end, (but not the very last episode.) He was a bad guy. ;)

I always thought it was funny that the 3 'Big damn heroes' of firefly all played villains in Buffy/Angel - Zoe was in Angel season 4 and Jayne in angel season 5.

Er, she was making the point that Malcolm Reynolds didn't appear on Buffy. You listed Nathan Fillion on Buffy twice.

Mike Massa, who doubled David Boreanaz on Buffy and Angel, also appeared on Firefly, if I remember correctly. He was the thug in Train Job who got run over by the mule, according to the commentary.

Haven’t Alan Tudyk and Mark Shepard both been in Dollhouse? Excuse the spelling…

Yes, they've both played in Firefly and Dollhouse, (though I can't actually place Mark Sheppard's character in Dollhouse,) but neither of them have a third credit in Buffy, Angel, or Horrible.
