Sorry, I meant to post this in General Discussions and put it on the wrong thread. I wanted to put this message in the right place:

I know we have quite a ways away until the premiere of Serenity, but I thought maybe we should get the ball rolling to get a premiere Shindig here in Florida.

I know other places around the country preparing as well, so I figured let's have one here with all our Firefly faithful here in the sunshine state. If anyone has any ideas on the logistics of where and what we can do, let's see if we can work something out and plan ahead, since we know when it’s going to be. And I know that there are a lot of fans out here in my home state who will be on the edge of their sanity until opening day, so let’s talk about where all of us can do this; Orlando? Tampa? Daytona? Jacksonville? Miami?

Does anyone know of a place we can have a huge Shindig party ball before the big event? Or does anyone have any movie theater contacts to see if we can take over and watch the movie in their theater? Does anyone have any alternatives? Let’s brainstorm on some ideas and see what we here in Florida can do!

I know there's a few of you out there who'd like for a 'Premiere Shindig' to be a reality, so let's get moving ma-shong!

I'd think Orlando would be about as centrally located as we could get. Don't have any bright ideas about anywhere in Orlando that would be practical though.

Think that might be the best thing. Is there anyone from Orlando that can help us out?

I'm in the Tampa/St. Pete area but would definitely be willing to travel to take in Serenity with a multitude of Browncoats. I doubt there will be a midnight showing, so we need to decide if we're willing to take the day of from work and see the first showing (I am). Or see an evening showing. There are MANY theaters in Orlando, perhaps one of the smaller ones would be willing to rent to us cheaper to have a Shindig before the showing. On the other hand, a larger theater may be showing it in Digital, does anyone even know if it's being shot digitally? Am I creating more problems than I should at this early stage of the game???

Not at all. With all this time until the movie opens, we have plenty of time to work out all the logistics and such.

If anyone has any kind of suggestions, please, don't hesitate to post 'em here! We're still in the idea stage yet and haven't got into the planning stage, so any thoughts or ideas and such are completely welcomed!

Might also be a good idea to transmit this to the OB, bein' as there are tons of Florida Browncoats online over there... (And some of 'em even LIVE in the Orlando area, I think...)

FAN-TASTIC!!!

I'm going on vacation tomorrow, but when I get back, I am definitely going on the OB to get the ball rolling.

I used to live in Orlando myself, and there are a couple of theaters there I used to go that they might accomidate us for watching the actual movie.

We shall see.

Over on the OB, csteinme suggested getting Universal Orlando involved. That reminded me that the theater at Universal Citywalk has worked with genre fans before. Once a month where they show an anime feature in conjunction with Anime Gaijin America.

To that end, I sent email to the default maildrop at Loew's Cineplex asking if they had anything planned for the BDM. I don't expect that they do, but it's never too early to get them thinking about the idea.

Similarly, I emailed Sci-Fi City in Orlando and the Coliseum of Comics in Kissimmee asking if they had any plans.

(At no time did I represent myself as part of an organized effort -- I didn't want to confuse the issue for whoever actually gets that job.)

Got my first reply -- from Coliseum of Comics. They don't have any definate plans as of yet, but at least they know someone is curious about Serenity related events. About all I was hoping for at this point.

I'm mostly a lurker around here, but I work in Orlando, and live just to the northwest of it in a little town called Mount Dora.

Coliseum of Comics is a great idea - they are excellent people there, and I bet they'd be willing to help out. If I remember right, they did an event for the premiere of Spiderman. The guy you want to contact there is named Brendan Boyle. (I'm almost positive that Sci-Fi City went out of business, but I could be wrong.)

Universal Cineplex is another good call, right on the grounds at Universal Orlando, and I'll betcha there will be at least one giant Serenity poster outside the theatre...

I personally would rather go for a larger theatre with better quality sound. Muvico at Pointe Orlando is one of the best theatres in the area, IMHO, and they have an IMAX screen. When a big movie opens, it usually will spend at least its first week in the IMAX theatre.

And then at the same time, Cinemark Festival Bay is off of International Drive, and it's a really good-quality theatre that's not quite as crowded as some of the others.

If the movie sticks to the April opening date, I would think it would be fairly easy to get something organized... that's before the main tourist season starts.

Anyhow, those are my random thoughts. Feel free to email me if I can help out in any way. I'll shoot an email to Brendan at Coliseum tonight. And if the shindig happens in Orlando, I'll be happy to offer crash space if you don't mind driving out to the country!

This would be really cool. I live in ORlando (Oviedo)...and of all the contacts I have across the City, none are related to any theaters (DOH!)

Just let me know when and where...I think it would be really cool to meet other fans...since (believe it or not) I haven't found ANYONE around me that has even HEARD of the show! (I know...GASP!!!)

BTW...Sci-Fi City is still open. There's one near the Home Deopt on 50 just before 436.

Another BTW...the IMAX theater at Muvico is very picky about what it shows on the big screen. I've called them before expecting certain movies to be playing on it and they laughed. Don't wanna burst any bubbles...but it's not a very safe bet to place until a lot closer to the relase date and they can give you answer as to whether or not it will be showing in there.

My bad about Sci-Fi City, Steve... I've been there once. I'm thinking of that place off International Drive, near Kirkman. Can't remember the name of it now. Damn.

Yeah, I figured the IMAX thing was a longshot, but a girl can dream.

I don't know any Browncoats in the area, either! It's a crime. If you ever make it up this way, let me know and we'll have a DVD party.

SHINY!!!! I'll definitely be there for the premiere shindig!!! Should we come in costume for the movie, or just the shindig portion??? I say, both!

I've converted about 5 people in my area - Tampa bay, but other than that I haven't met anyone who was already a browncoat. Would love to attend any kind of shindig and meet others as addicted to this 'verse as my group is!

I don't have any contacts in Orlando, but any way I could help, you got it!!!

MOVIEMAN

I just happened to be looking around the net to see where my theater popped up when I ran across this discussion. I am a manager at the Universal Cineplex in Orlando. We do indeed do regular anime shows (one per month) with a local club called Anime Gaijin, we also work with Sci-Fi Zone Radio in Orlando to do a monthly Sci-Fi screening. We regularly worked with Coliseum of Comics and various related businesses on promotions and special screenings. Please feel free to have someone contact us about this movie, maybe my marketing manager can work something out with Sci-Fi Zone Radio as we already have a pretty good fan base through them. Contact information for the theater can be retrieved at www.enjoytheshow.com. And while I may be biased, I would venture to say that we have the finest facility in Orlando

Please keep in mind that I do not regularly visit this site, but merely was searching for customer comments in order to see where we need improvement.

I live in the central Florida area and would be very glad to attend and possibly help out with a pre-BDM shindig. I don't really go to the Universal Cineplex very often (no particular reason other than I just don't live THAT close by), but I think it would be a good location.

Howdy! I'm Shell and haven't been around this board for, um, almost two years ;).

I'm in Tampa, probably for at least the next few months. (Guildsister, we have to have lunch one day!).

Csteinme from the OB scouted the Loews at Citywalk and posted pros/cons last week. She also has contacts with the Florida Mall Hotel (formerly the Adam's Mark Hotel) so we can get excellent room rates for anyone coming in from out-of-town.

We've had several Florida Shindigs and mini-'digs and are getting pretty good at logistics. Oh, and in case you didn't know, we've already volunteered to host the Browncoat Ball next year in Orlando, too (pending the success of the Chicago event.)

All this is to say that before things get too much further, I'm thinking we Florida Browncoats need a centralized place to discuss this, so efforts aren't duplicated.

At worst (read: most inefficient) I can liaison and post what's written on the ob over here.

A Shindig in Florida would be a good thing, a nice ball, with a buffet table to question. Everyone dressed in all the finery.. a site to behold. Just a thought but if you work just outside the major tourist areas, lodging and such is cheaper. Might ask the locals such as in the Tampa area to check places like the Sheraton or some such that tend to host, and could contact a major theater complex ( veterens ) that may be willing to set aside one theater screen if the numbers get to be high enough.

The Journey is the worthier part.

That's really great! I'm glad we're getting a great response to putting on a Shindig for the Serenity Premiere.

I've been away for a bit with vacation, work, and something really good happening personally . But I'm back now and want to focus on getting this started.

I guess first and foremost is to get a committee going with liaisons to the Theaters in Orlando, to hotels and such stuff like that. Also, some contacts to the organizers from the possible Browncoat Ball that'll be held in Orlando next year, to see if we can coordinate with them as well.

My e-mail address is Diesel2k@aol.com. For those interested, I'm willing to be the central liaison for both FFF.net and the OB; as well as a coordinator for the people up in NE Florida. Just put on the subject line: "Shindig".

PS - Jacksonville will have DreamCon next year. We're still debating on what next year's date will be, but we might be able to get Jewel Staite back plus another cast member. Perhaps, the DreamCon committee, of which I am a part of, will be able to arrange something as well, in maybe advertising the Browncoat Ball or maybe getting Jewel or one of the other cast to do something for our premiere (maybe not be at our premiere, but maybe do something nice for us ). I'll let you guys know.

Not necessarily, particularly in the case of Orlando which caters to tourists and families. Food and lodging *can* be found at reasonable rates there. Not to mention the central location.

Quote:

But I *like* my fellow Browncoats and wouldn't subject them to the pretend-city of Tampa :).

Seriously, although the major draw is the BDM, we need to shindig in a place where there are opportunities for other activities. People will be making a vacation of this event--staying over the weekend most likely. We need to make sure it's worth their while :).

Edited to fix quotes.
