American Bryan Singer, who has previously tackled sci-fi fantasy in X-Men and Superman Returns, has been signed to direct and produce a film version of Battlestar Galactica, according to Variety.

Singer, who also directed The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie, had been part of a team trying to develop a TV pilot for a new Battlestar Galactica TV series in 2000.

That project was shelved after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and he was not connected with the Canadian-shot series Battlestar Galactica, launched in 2004, as he was directing the first two X-Men movies.

The most recent Battlestar series, a cult favourite and multiple award winner, recently wrapped up its final season. The series explored war, religion, torture and destiny against the backdrop of the search for Earth by human survivors of an attack by Cylons, a race of intelligent robots.

There are plans for a spinoff series, Caprica, set a generation earlier and SyFy Channel announced the production of a two-hour TV movie based on the series in 2008.

The original series began in 1978 and a spinoff, Galactica, had a short-lived run in 1980.

The big-screen Battlestar Galactica movie has yet to be written, but the Hollywood Reporter says the film will be a reimagining of the franchise

How many times do you reimagine something ?

"All this has happened before, and all this will happen again"

I've always interpreted that line to mean that the franchise will be reimagined repeatedly. I don't think a reimagining is a good idea at this point, so soon after the end of the recent series. Wait another 20 years.

But... FOR THE LOVE OF EXPLOSIVES!

I'll be surprised if it actually happens.

IMHO, I think the reverse is true. They keep recycling the same ideas until they've burned the heart out of them.

I've said it elsewhere but I'm'a say it here too, "I wanted to be the one to re-re-imagine Battlestar Galactica!"

PATCHIST

Yeah I agree it's too soon. If they shelved it 9 years ago then another 15-20 wont make a difference. HA! Besides, we'll still get our fix of BSG with 'The Plan' and 'Caprica'.
