A new poll found by MovieFreak73! So far, this appears to be a 'clean' poll. No hacks/cheats/autobots/etc. as of yet.

That's pretty funny.
Lookin' at the new totals over there, I can't help but remember 'back in the day' when we could generate more legitimate votes in a day than anybody but Firefly has as a total right now.

Actually, www.moviespeople.com/top-movies.html can be "hacked" using the multiple proxies approach, but no one seems to be doing that. Except, maybe, Lucy Lawless fans.

Yeah, I tried it once, just to see if they had any defense against proxies (is there any?)

FillyGirl - True, true. Once TVVote closed down, it took the wind from our sails.

For those that are too new here (and several have been here for a while now, but are still new enough) to remember the epic battle that was TVVote (follow the Previous Thread links far enough & you'll find start finding charts & graphs. Once you find 'em, go back another two years or so...). TVVote is the best poll to have been operated to date. Rich (site operator) had the poll locked down tight. Rules violations were dealt with as quickly as he found them (votes didn't get counted, ip's got banned, etc.). He updated the poll numbers once a day, and then only after he'd reviewed them to scrub for cheaters.

We Browncoats are a small, highly motivated, and dare I say honorable group that are willing to take on all comers in any contest that requires fanaticism vs ability to cheat a given system. There have been some dark times during which there was no place for folk like us to move about at all (all available polls were easily hacked), and many regulars have become less so.

One of the counter measures I'm familiar with is scrubbing the ip addresses that are being voted from. If you consistently get the same addresses coming in in the same order, it's a hack. I'm sure that there are others, but Rich never divulged them to me.

Hear ye, hear ye!
The first post in the thread strikes me as being a bit... much.
I'm thinking perhaps create a "Place holder thread" that will contain all of the many & various links to PlacesToVote (that will be linked to in every "new" thread), and using the first post in the thread to hold only the active, minimal cheating, multiple vote thread(s) (moviespeople for now).

Changes will be made at the opening of the next new thread (close to 100 posts on this one).
Thoughts?

In my brief experience with the proxy cheat, I found it to be very time consuming and frustrating (not all proxies work with all sites). You could probably automate to some degree, but you are still dealing with an unstable environment (the free proxy IPs come and go, and are not always available.)

If you automated it, you could have it operate in a somewhat random schedule. Although, over time, a pattern analysis detection routine would eventually catch it (along with some false positives, some people can be very predictable as well.)

There's one Browncoat apparently using it at TVTally. I haven't really seen it anywhere else (at least not on a big scale.)It's all too time consuming for me, and I suspect, most people as well. The several who were using it for Jericho at TVTally appear to have given up (or just got tired out.)

If I was sure I'd have enough time to do the job properly, I'd contact Rich & see if he'd be willing to let me restart TV Vote (under a different name if necessary) & use his hack detectors.

That would probably attract a lot of attention, if only for the novelty. But it is a lot of work, which is one reason Rich eventually shit it down. At least install AdSense to take some of the stong out of it.

That's just the weekly results on TVTally. The Browncoat ProxyMaster(s) who was piling up all the votes there, appears to have moved on. The Jericho heavy hitters had earleir given up. That's because the total vote
http://www.tvtally.com/shows/overalltop.php?top=25
shows Firefly 50,000 votes ahead of Jericho.

That Browncoat heavy hitter (I forget his handle here. I exchanged some email with him about how he went about generating the huge votes) appears to have shown up at Moviepeople. Unless there's more than one of these heavy hitters. There appears to have been several going at it for Jericho on TVTally.

Three words for those that seem to think what they do is okay or fair: GET A LIFE.

Just do things honestly and fairly. Like vandalism, wrecking the world for everyone else for a few moments of rush seems a waste of time to me. Glad they have moved on.

If you're referring to me, I haven't voted in any polls in months. When TVTally started going up by thousands a day it became a farce, as have most of the others. Doesn't help spread good vibes about the 'verse when folks are just p***ing off other fanbases...

Titan, yeah, that was it. But if it wasn't you, how many heavy voter browncoats are out there? Someone did us a solid at Moviepeople the other day, but whoever poured on 130,000 Firefly votes at TVTally since June (compared to 80,000 for Jericho), is gone (or dead from exhaustion.)

These guys must have automated that proxy voting thing. No way that could have been done manually, unless there was a team of them.

You could use bots, but botnets are expensive (they cost real money to create, and maintain). They cost a few bucks a day (per zombified PC) to rent, although we may have some scumbag scammer who is also a browncoat, and having his botnet voting, while also spreading spam and malware.

Come to think of it, that's a very browncoat thing to do, execpt it's real, and not fiction.
