As the title says there is a big shindig planned (or rather being planned) in Houston TX for the opening day of the BDM (that being April 22, 2005)
It’s gonna be 8 hours of Firefly fun!!
We (the meetup folks from Houston, and whoever else is willing to help*wink wink* *nudge nudge*) are planning to have it at a movie theater called The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. It’s a really cool place where they got these sorta bench tables in front of the seats and you can have real food, like burgers and pizzas and the like, and eat during the movie.
You can get more info from their website:
http://www.drafthouse.com/index.html

We’re gonna rent out a theater for 8 hours, I figure that’ll be enough time to do some mingling, maybe have a sing along, watch a few Firefly episodes (I’m thinkin’ Serenity 1&2 and Objects in Space, but we can vote on that later) watch the movie, and maybe have a discussion afterwards. They also got wireless Internet access in all theaters and web broadcasting capability, so whoever can’t make it in person could still be there via the web!!

SO what we need from you good folk is a headcount of sorts. The Alamo Drafthouse has the capacity to fit anywhere from 95 people to 300 people, so we’re gonna need to know how many people are willing to go so we could figure out which theatre to rent out, and then figure out the pricing from there.

Thanks for your help,
~Val

I am completely willing to go depending on the time cause God knows whats gonna be happening by that then(school and all). I might be able to bring a couple more people if I coerce them. Great idea, I was actually thinking of that earlier...not that I would have brought it into fruition or anything.

That's really cool, but is there one set for anywhere near the Los Angeles area? I would drive to L.A. for a shindig! It's only like 2 hours away. I cant seem to find any major Browncoats within a 30 mile radius! I'm going crazy! If you know anyone, please e-mail me!

I got my mom and two of my friends to promise to cosplay as characters for the premere. But i still need six more people! At least. Is anyone willing to be someone other than Inara, River, or wash? I would love to have the whole crew!

Well, there is a thread on the OB where some Browncoats are planning an LA BDM Shindig, here's the link:

LA and Houston are about the same distance from me, so...hmmm.

Maybe I'll just cut myself in half and go to both. Although being nearly a year away who's to know where I'll be at that time.

Is Static still planning the Raleigh shindig? Eh, Static? Perhaps if enough of us get this going, we'll have one within driving distance of everybody. Then it really would be a national event. I don't suppose it could really be global, sadly. Sorry, foreign people.

And I could definitely manage Wash. Heh.

Hey! Some of foreign people (well, a displaced U.S. person currently in Japan) are making plans to fly over for the BDM. I know I don't have the patience to wait until it shows up here. If it does. In English. But I have to wait a while until I commit to buying a plane ticket to anywhere.

All my life I wanted to be somebody. I guess I should have been more specific.

Not so much. I live in central Georgia, so it would take me about six to seven hours. I kinda perked up when I saw an event being planned in the SE, but I guess I need to look for something in the Atlanta area, 'cause I have NO sense of direction, and I'd probably never make it back home if I attempted to travel two states away :)

There's no such thing as a free lunch, but you can get a free breakfast at any major hotel chain in America!

Just head north to 95 and straight on 'till morning! I might have a house by then, so I may be willing to offer my place to crash. But only if people promise they aren't psychos. And also if they don't sit up all night talking about computers.

Hm...I'll have to keep this in mind. I wouldn't mind a little trip out of state :)

Any AZ Firefly Fans out there? Anyone aware of any AZ Shindigs? I live in the "West Valley", in Phoenix, but I'm willing to travel a bit, if hubby's work schedule permits.

My Wife and I are in San Diego (about two hours south of LA) so barring major catastrophe we will be at the whatever premier shindig there is.

We also have quite a few friends in Phoenix and travel there several times a year, so if any shindiging is going on there, please let me know, just in case we can make it.

By the way, anyone planning on going to next month's Comic-Con in San Diego? So far as I have been able to tell there won't be much if any Firefly/Serenity presence, but I have heard that Joss attends fairly regularly.

Anybody wanna try for a shindig at the originaler drafthouses down in Austin? I don't know how much they charge to rent out a theater at the Lakecreek or Village drafthouses but I'm in if we get enough people together.

Why don't ya just come on down to Houston?
That way ya just have fun meeting fellow BrownCoats and watching the movie instead of worrying 'bout the organizing

Seems like a long trip to take and I know none of my friends here will go for it and I wanna be there when they experience firefly for the first time (unless I can finally tie em up and force them to watch the dvds ).

Plus then I'd know some more Austinites. Just moved her in January so I pretty much just know co-workers.

If a Raleigh thing is happening, that'd be great, even tho parking at the Rialto is horrendous. I definitely think I could sacrifice for the occasion and our beloved Firefly.

FROM CHUCKYBONES:
UPDATE *** UPDATE *** UDPATE *** UPDATE
Okay, Browncoats, here's the latest on the Houston Shindig.

We can't really get a theater at the Alamo Drafthouse for eight hours on an afternoon or evening, especially a Friday afternoon or evening. Mornings and early afternoon they're great about, but evenings are their bread-and-butter. BIG bucks.

Plan right now is for us to have the theater from 9 or 10 Friday morning, April 22nd, until 3pm. We'd watch the Serenity pilot, Objects in Space, maybe Ariel, and we'd have a costume contest and possibly an auction. We'd also like to have filking and just some general "hanging out" time.

At 3:00, we'd buy out the theater's tickets and then we'd sit and watch "Serenity" the movie. Currently, this is looking like $15 to $20 per person to attend and enjoy, and the price should include drinks (non-alcoholic). There would be free goodies, and we're hoping to have some other cool stuff.

These plans are subject to change; we're checking on the possibility of a midnight show, either Thursday night or Friday night. The theater is in a shopping mall, so we'll have to see. Also note: we dropped off a copy of the DVD's with the Alamo Drafthouse events coordinator! Ha ha ha! Convert and conquer from within! I'm hoping she passes them on to her boss, he's supposed to like scifi action/adventure stuff. If we hook him, we're SO in.

Anyway, keep checking this thread. As we get more details, we'll post them here. But we're shooting for one big-@$$ shindig, suitable for the premiere of "Serenity." Let us know if you think you can attend.
