I have had AVG antivirus software on my computer for pretty much as long as I've had the machine (about four years now, it's a laptop), along with avast! and a zone alarm firewall.

Well, now all of a sudden AVG keeps alerting me that several of its components are outdated, and updates haven't been working for it. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling (after I tried just plain restarting), but when I do it tells me the wizard is outdated, as is the version of AVG. This is the most recent edition of AVG out there, so I don't know what's happening.

After wrestling with it, I think it might just be easier to get new software.

So the question is, does anyone know of any free trial software I can download instead, and do you have a trusted link for said download? Thanks.

If your computer is 4 yrs old, that means it probably has XP; which should be compatable with AVG stuff. Umm...I have no idea.

I have the same problem you have (AVG won't update), only different. Unlike yours, the computer I'm using right now is 10 yrs old, has Win98, and *now* AVG doesn't support 98 anymore.

Sorry I can't help. We never covered this in shop class.

I had the same problem with AVG. I have Vista so I was surprised. I did download AVAST from www.download.com.

That site is run by CNET and also provides reviews, both by the editors and users, I look up all my software and electronics potentials there.

AVG was previously good stuff. A couple years ago it switched to malware, so your current AVG is messing up your computer.

I've had the free versions of Avast and Avira and they got lots fo stuff when I installed them, but I can't remove either of them now. Each of them got different things.

But stay away from AVG and i think spybot is now on the dark side. I forget now if Lavasoft was the AVG or the adware.

No problems so far with Avast. BTW CNet certifies it as spyware free too.

yeah, had to uninstall AVG 'cause it's totally not working anymore. Have Avast, but I'd just like something else for overlap, you know?

Jewel: so are you saying Avast has a problem now too? (cripes, are there no more good antivirus softwares out there anymore?)

NC: yeah, I've been to download.com before, I'll have to revisit it.

thanks to everyone for their help ^_^

AVG will have problems if it thinks your system clock is wrong. I've fought with it myself.

Hello FreeLancerTex:

Have you recent update your Windows Explore to version "8". I started having soom problems with my Norton anti-virus software shortly after I did this update.

Remember me discussing this in another thread. They finally had to use a repair program. It works fine now.

I have found Norton to be very good. However, it is not free. It is about $50.00 a year. Since I have never used any other software I can't compare, only know they have support available if anything does go wrong and will stay with you until it is fixed.
