Just some random things
Question 1:
Was the character Bendis (the guy who got shot during the war scene at the begining of Serenity) named for Brian Michael Bendis, writer of both crime novels & Marvel comics?
Question 2:
Was the Alliance starship Dortmunder named after the character John Dortmunder from the Donald Westlake crime/comedy novels such as "The Hot Rock"? Since all the novels are about big capers that go horribly wrong...
Question 3:
Since all bad guys wear hats...
Jayne sometimes wears a hat...
Is Joss trying to say Jayne is sometimes a bad guy?

When faced with a moral question I ask myself; "What would The Lone Ranger do?"

I've wondered this one myself. Joss does read comics (and now, of course, he writes X-Men), and Bendis is one of the 'big names' of the current comic industry (and one of the better writers IMHO), so I wonder if he was throwing a name reference out. Of course, it could just as easily be coincidence.

I don't know where the hat thing equals bad guy came from but if this is from Buffy or Angel, I don't think it applies to Firefly because a lot of the bad guys don't wear hats while even some of the good guys do wear hats.

Zoe must be a bad guy too because in the war scenes she is usually wearing a hat if you are using the philosophy hat wearing equals bad guys.

Where did that idea ever come from? Is it a Buffy or Angel thing?

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

The idea of hats=bad guy is brought up by the great master himself (JW in case there was any doubt!) in the commentaries on the DVD set (I think he even mentions it in serenity commentary when the Alliance officers are shown wearing hats) And Jayne is kinda a bad guy... he's just on Mal's side.. for now...

Jayne: "Pain is scary" (serenity)

Dortmund is a city in Germany. So, he might be making a statement (ie the Nazi thing).

He could also very easily have been "Jossing" us. His commentaries are much like his writing - a lot of the time it's difficult to predict and impossible to interpret.

Yep. And again by Nathan and Alan in the commentary for War Stories. I don't think a hat is a cast-iron guarantee of badness, nor vice versa (the hands of blue don't wear hats, for example), just an increased likelihood.

I wonder if the 'verse has an Evil Millinery that sells blue gloves on the side?

Niska never wears a hat. Neither do the MiB(Men in Blue). You just don't get much more "bad guy" than these folks.

(as politely as possible)
To everyone naming all the villians in the series who didn't wear a bloody hat, it wasn't my observation, it was from Joss W. himself on the commentary.

He wanted to arrest Simon and River, Arrest the crew for killing the crew of that ship and he took the crew's selvage! I don't think he is a Good Guy but he isn't pure evil.
