If there are changes in the film, how will it affect you?

KINGOFTHEMUDDERS

I am generally not a purist. I enjoyed the LOTR's adaptation even if it wasn't completely faithful to the books. However, I was thinking about the subtle changes mentioned in the Movie *SPOILER*(the ship is said to be changed a tiny bit, Book is a little bit changed as well)*SPOILER*, and I was wondering what my reaction to them would be. I love Firefly and can't wait to see the BDM, but I don't know if I would be able to embrace _any_ change from the source material. I want the movie to be EXACTLY the same as the tv show, just longer. If they, say, put the medical room where the bunks are and the bunks where the medical room is - I might FREAK OUT and start holding up my Firefly DVD box set (which I will no-doubt bring) and cry "THIS IS NOT RIGHT!!!1 THIS IS NOT SERENITY!!!" If Books hair is short rather than poofy, I very-well might boycott the movie ( ;) ). If there isn't the lesbian overtones between Kaylee and Inara, I'll probably burn the theatre down.

So, my question is, how will you embrace (any)changes?

I guess I'm a bit more adaptable...

I could forgive much, as long as the HEART of Firefly was there (no, I'm not talking about Kaylee here, though she is essential as well).

Like with the Lord of the Rings example, the HEART of the story was there. I could believe that each of the characters were who they claimed to be. I didn't see something and think, "Aragorn would NEVER do THAT!"

I felt the same about the X-Men movies. They took LOTS of liberties with the story and the past history as given in the comics, but the important bits they got right. That WAS Wolverine. That WAS Cyclops.

Frankly, I refuse to believe that Joss would let something happen that would bother me too much.]

I agree.
We can't worry about the small stuff.
They will keep it true to the spirit of the show.
We have to expect some changes, but we can adapt.

Bwahh!!!!!

The only changes that have been mentioned that worry me are just along the lines of the type of story we can expect. The series worked so well for me because it was about real people struggling to make life work. It wasn't about epic battles against evil or any other grand mythic nonsense. It's always been about the characters.
If a large budget pressures them to do something over the top, like almost all the crap coming out of Hollywood these days, that will be very disappointing. I think that's unlikely, but it does worry me. Minor changes to the characters and the ship, not so much.
As long as they stay true to the spirit of the series, why not try to make improvements? I'm sure there were plenty of small compromises Joss had to make due to the TV budget or scheduling. He's probably anxious to make the movie even truer to his vision.

Part of my concern rests on set design and special effects - they have a large budget this time and things are going to be upscaled...

... but I liked the grittyness of the series. I don't think anything needs changing.

Come to think of it, I was a lil annoyed that Rogue wasn't Rogue in X-men. Maybe I'm not as unpuritanical (is that a word?) as I thought I was.

For me, the important point is that the movie is not an adaptation. Both the TV series and the movie are expressions of Joss Whedon's art. I don't feel I have the right to make any demands; phases of that expression may not work for me, but that doesn't invalidate them.

Ah, but you can do a story about real people accomplishing remarkable things, saving the world, fighting evil, etc. I realize that movie audiences are different, and that the type of story will be different from what we are used to. But again, I see no reason why we can't have a great movie about real characters doing something big, epic, heroic, or what have you.

The only thing I am worried about is:

A) Can I wait for - at the utmost least - 9 months? UK times'll prolly be pushed right back anyway, so it could even be up for 10...

B) Will it be successful - I do so wish it will be, for then, more fillums

I expect that with all the extra funding there'll more special effects thats all, I'm sure JW wont change any characteristics of the crew. We'll probably see more space scenes and such.

I suppose you're right. But it just seems Hollywood makes some very specific, and unfortunate, assumptions when it comes to action/adventure/science-fiction fans and what they want to watch. Some of us want something besides an adolescent power fantasy.

Personally I feel strongly that what we see on the screen THIS time will be Joss' vision...
the TV show involved constant compromises Joss had to make w/the suits at the network,
but the movie is his pure vision (or so I believe) and there fore I will embrace and rejoice in any changes Joss makes!

Well I'll embrace any changes that are realistic and not the whim of the suits at 'Versel. If say the bridge had changed and had different control panels then sometime during the movie this science happened:
Kaylee: Well Wash how do you like the new upgrade.
Wash: Its shiny, about time Mal sprung for an upgrade. What I was using before was older than Book.
Or if book had less poofy hair and this happened:
Mal: ‘Bout time you got a haircut.
Book: Well its not like I had a choice.
Simon: I’m sorry Shepherd I don’t know where she got the scissors.
*Jayne quietly sneaks out of the room trying not to smile*

I would accept this change since the characters acknowledge the change and explain it.

I have to throw a little bit in here as well...

Were the show to have gone on for 7 seasons, we would have seen changes in the characters, maybe even the set, and the storylines would have developed different ways. So, what's the movie, really? It's like skipping season 2 and *poof* ending up in Season 3. Everybody gets a little background so they know what they missed last season, and off they go.

Don't see what we have to worry about.

And I might also note...

If we (aka all the Browncoats and Internet Junkies) hype this thing up too much, or declare either its greatness or failure, we are doomed for dissapointment. It's 9 months away. Sure, be excited that there's a movie coming out, but accept that it will be what it will be. And be reayd to enjoy it. Don't cry out at every change, don't cry out at major changes, the movie will be the work of Joss, and gorramit, that's all right by me.

There's only two things I know for certain about the movie: 1.) I will love it 2.) If Joss doesn't give me some sort of satisfaction on both the Inara/Mal and Simon/Kaylee relationships, I will be quite cranky with him. That's really all I ask. :)
