Just hoping, not trying to spread any rumors. I was playing Riddick: Escape from Butchers Bay on XBox.... fanTASTIC game, imo - the movie was pretty good too...But it lead me to thinkin... ( yes, once again.) Now that games are coming out more and more in conjunction with sci fi/ action movies as a means of cross marketing, anyone think that we could see a Firefly version? Oh please please please!

I hope not. They wouldl kill it. At least not the Serenity crew. Maybe a differnt crew. Kinda KOTOR-like, the rules and places, but different people or times. Make sense? I think there is RPG around here somewhere.

It wouldn't suprise me if they decided to come out with a video game tie-in to Serenity however I'm generaly disappointed with the quality of movie tie-in games as they're usually rushed to match the release date of the movie. Also if they made it I'm pretty sure it'd be released on all three consoles plus the pc and not just the Xbox.

Oh, how could I forget. Over commercialization of our precious Firefly 'verse would only cheapen it. What was I thinking ? Guess it's just the Blue Sun in me.

Based on the average game development cycle and the planned release date of Serenity, even if it were more a logical movie tie in to use(which its really not), it wouldn't be practical. They'd have only 9 months or so to develop a game, you just can't do that without it being crap.(generally)

Vivendi Universal (Universal's parent company) owns Sierra Stuidos, the geniuses behind Half-Life. If they were to develop a Serenity video game...

C'mon you guys, lighten up! Aren't you forgetting this whole Firefly phenom we're basking in? The kind of conventional wisdom that y'all are throwing up on the screen is exactly what Joss has dealt with and triumphed over. Sure most movie-based video games are the worst, but so's most network tv!

Anywayz, no way could a good game come out in 9 months, but over the course of the phenomenally successful trilogy? I could see a good game coming out with the second movie. I could totally see it marketed as a "lost episode," like maybe a prequal with Wash in his mustache and what's-his-name, the mechanic. All the voice acting would be from the original cast. Unlock the Book mini-game when from he was a stealth assassin!

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

If there is to be a firefly game it should be a fan written game. Probaly a mod of some existing game or possaby something written open source. Put it in the hands of this community and we will get a better game than any company can produce.

Agreed, Gunrunner. Even if it was something set in the universe it would be incredible.

I don't care, I'm still free.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I would like to see a game, but only if it was well thought out, graphics and playability were great, and the original cast did the voices of the characters.

I doubt we will see anything w/ the first movie, but if it is a success, who knows. We may have a game before the 2nd movie is released.

oooh, thinking about it, firefly has the potential to be a great licence along the lines of the all time classic elite. having a number of systems to fly around trading, taking various jobs of moral ambiguity, salvaging damaged ships, trying to avoid the attention of the law and such like. I think it might work best if it had no direct bearing on our beloved crew however.

having a random captain that you could stamp with your own personality - being happy to do work in the core planets for greater gain, not being tied to just flying the serenity, but being able to buy new different ships (more traders, war ships of various sorts, passenger liners etc) as you start making serious money, getting your own skyplexes around different planets and setting up business offices on planets and setting yourself up as some sort of nisca or badger character.

maybe you could interject the freeform nature of such a vision with bits of story relating to our BDHs and verious other characters from the universe to help maintain that firefly feel. As has been mentioned earlier in the thread, licences tend to suck, and they tend to suck as you are trying to meld the interactive medium of a game with the fixed progression of a film and some of the best acclaimed licences have been those that didn't try to stick to a known storyline or try to make a 'missing episode' kind of game.

damn i like my ideas :)

Wouldn't mind seeing an mmporpg myself. A whole 'Verse of ships out there. There are, what, like 40,000 fireflys alone not to mention the no doubt numerous other classes for your average independant minded types... and you could have Aliance up for grabs too... though how exactly that would work out is a question better left to game designers being as the independance is far more 'formal' in it's structure with command chains and the like.

Grand Theft Spacecraft!

You could go planet to planet, hijacking spaceships and slamming them into buildings and other spaceships. You could run missions for some of the local scum.... Niska, Badger, etc.. If you get hurt, you go find a companion to get the ole heart pumpin' at full strength again.

I brought up a lot of these same objections on a different messageboard when the first Buffy game was announced for X-Box and they proved me well and truly wrong on that one.
And given that I would consider that a Buffy game was much more of a challenge (can anyone else think of a decent roaming martial-arts adventure game?) than a Firefly game could/would/might be (there being several excelent space flight, shooting and roleplaying games already proving what's possible).
I do agree that it's probably too short a period of time to have one done by the first movie (it would have at least been announced on a publisher's schedule by now) but that's not any reason to suggest there wouldn't be one done. Because of the protracted development times of modern games there have been quite a few movie tie-ins released a year or so after the film they where based on.
The trick would be to make sure the movie makes a big enough splash that people still remember it a couple of years down the line (or make the trilogy, as someone else suggested) when a good game could be ready.

Well I don't know about XBox, but I just finished co-DMing another Neverwinter Nights Firefly game. LOTS of fun. We had a great crew - the usual (captain, mechanic, pilot, doctor, etc.) - but we had a Purser (greedy little guy), Companion (some great roleplaying as she talked with Mr. Higgens), and a Shepherd (tried to convince the Alliance to not arrest the captain). They did some first-class roleplaying, and barely made it off Higgen's Moon with the contraband mud and a newly acquired murder rap (one Alliance Lieutenant).

So, if CRPG is what you want, and you don't mind graphics that aren't FIRST-class (we've got Blue Sun logos and ads for Persephone, for instance, though), head over to

http://nwvault.ign.com/Files/modules/data/1080769905000.shtml
and grab the module!

Sorry...waited too long...had to plug the game :)

Oh, and as you said, Gunrunner, it's open-source, and made by fans!

Like say, for instance, in time for the DVD/home video release?
