Pretty sure it was already tried.

That, and I think that ship sailed a loooong time back. If we want anything, we should push for Serenity 2.

We tried everything we could think of. but FF as a serties is regretably a lost cause. A reboot? Never say never, but original cast? Not so much.

Serenity 2 is still a hope, and if someone wanted to, Serenity: the Series seems viable as well.

Well, far as I know, Fox's rights to Firefly the series expires in 2012. A reboot, even with the original cast might still be possible at that time. It seems like right now there IS interest in doing stuff with the franchise. Universal and Fox just keep fighting each other for a cut of the money and killing off the projects through argument before they even get off the ground.

It's only two years. Until then, let's just hope everyone takes care of themselves. :)

And who knows? Dollhouse might still be a segue into something new with Fox, after all, Fox cut Universal in on The Sarah Conner Chronicles. But Joss has to prove again that he can get the numbers, which regrettably he didn't do the first season. We'll see how it goes.

Given the DVD sales situation as a driving force in Firefly, I think a made for TV movie (typically $4-6 million budget) or mini-series is the most likely first step in a reboot. I don't think we are going to see a wide release BDM again.

The only project that I've heard of where this was the case was the MMOG. What have I missed?

My assumption was that other projects expanding on the franchise might also be fought over.

Except for the comic books... But I'm starting to wonder why A Shepherd's Tale is so delayed.

The original "Serenity" two-part TV pilot budget was around $10 million.
That was 7-8 years ago.
A lot of the prop house rental pieces are gone now
and Serenity (the ship) would have to be built for a third time.
I think the barest minimum budget to tell any Firefly/Serenity story is probably $10 million plus.

A two-hour TV movie or Direct-To-DVD wouldn't likely generate enough income,
but a 5 to 10 part mini-series would.
It would also gauge interest in a full-fledged return to series TV.
