I don't hunt because I've got a grocery store that has everything I need. If I did hunt it would only be for food. I think hunting for sport is sick. If you derive pleasure out of killing something just for the sake of killing it then you have psychological issues IMO.

I don't hunt. Used to a long time ago with my dad but the biggest thing I ever shot was a squirel.

Not a fan of venison so I never killed a deer.

Although a friend of mine just got a Russian Boar and I am looking forward to some tasty, tasty fresh piggy! MMMmmm MMMMmmm! Fresh Bacon!!!

[rant]The weapons some people use now-a-days to "hunt" with bug me. If you need to fire off 15 rounds to hit your target once you do not deserve to be out there. And why I tend to not go at all. No, I don't need 15 rounds to hit a target, I am just affraid of running into one of the 14 that some idiot missed with while still in flight![/rant]

Of course I say this as someone married to the one shot wonder who can hit anything with one shot so maybe I'm biased....

Deer is yum ( as is buffalo )Also practical as for the first 2 months you're breastfeeding they suggest no red meat because of the growth hormone so deer is a good way to get around that( I'm pretty sure they aren't breaking into medical facilities and scarfing deer hormones)

I'm also hoping for some rabbit stew this winter ( and some fur to make hoods for Annie and Audrey)

I am like Solarflare. Getting up at 4:00 A.M. and stand in the cold is not my idea of fun. Anyway, we have anywhere from 600,000 to 700,000 hunters in Wisconsin. I think that is plenty.

To calm your nerves a bit Kelhil, Nevada (and most other states) have strict guidelines on the capacity of rounds a firearm may hold for their state hunts. A maximum of five round magazine capacity for rifles and three rounds total capacity in shotguns. The deer I took a few years ago was taken with a semiautomatic AK47. I would not be dumb enough to be in possession of the usual 30 round plinker magazine as my license would be pulled (possibly forever) and would be fined heavily by the wildlife officer. Yeah, officer. One of the best things state and federal wildlife management divisions did was to have their "rangers" become sworn officers. They enforce wildlife related laws in conjunction with the normal operation of a law enforcement officer. Makes for good conservation having officers that can enforce DUI and littering laws against dirtbags who do use 30 round magazines while tearing up the countryside with their ATV's and trucks/SUVs throwing out their beer cans and bottles wherever they please.

A bunch of hunters really took heat for the Filipino guy who shot those people in Michigan a few years ago. People like that just need to be strung up out in the woods and left...

I suspect the case you refer to was in Wisconsin, a Viet guy from the Twin Cities hunting in WI.

ok so here's a ponder: why do people feel the unshakable need to be *stubborn*? About anything, deliberately stubborn. i.e. when the trash is full, or when it's been emptied and someone has forgotten to put a new bag in, instead of taking it out or replacing the bag, one just waits, and finds somewhere else to throw things away, or doesn't use disposable stuff, or whatever. especially when someone mentions "hey, there's no bag in the trash can." that's just an example, but applicable to almost any situation where attention is brought to a minor detail that needs to be taken care of, and people deliberately wait, even if it's an inconvenience to them, just to see who'll crack first. Why do we *do* that?

The first week after my wife and I were married, she told me one day that the garbage was full. Mentally, I agreed.

Several hours later, she repeated the observation that the garbage was full. At which point, I mentally made a note that she was still correct.

A little while later, she was angry with me, and I had no idea why...

Of course, she was certain that she had asked me to take out the garbage. I simply never heard the request.

We were in grad school at the time, and the next semester I took a course in linguistics. It saved my marriage.

It is an original from the Western Underground album. That is the great thing about a decent performer. They can make a classic song their own while still giving credit to those who created it. What's better is their ability to put out their own stuff and still have emotion and tradition worthy of being lumped in with more classic songs.

Sorry about the generalization. I was working from memory and the details of the incident were VERY mixed. It was such a strange happening. There were allegations of harassment on the part of the victims, then the killer said they shot first, and the lack of witnesses seemed to be some sort of set up with the amount of people who said they saw all of the parties involved before the incident but not after.

I hope that any sportsmen who encounter people with illicit magazines during a hunt will inform law enforcement as to what they saw. Anyone who is willing to break basic laws are more likely to break others. I am not against extra capacity magazines. But I am against anyone who cannot honor the hunt by abiding by the basic rules set before them. It not only sets hunters in a bad light, it also taints the hunt and dishonors the spirit of the animal.

The great thing about learning communication nuances is the empowerment of being able to teach people how to communicate. I teach classes on communication and the personal "teaching interactions" seemed to be more effective than actually teaching people. Influencing the way people communicate works better because they don't second guess how they are communicating, they understand that other people have something to say, they listen to other people rather than just hearing them, and they think about what they say before they say it.

All this "Female Communication" mentality is bullshit. To abide by such nonsense is disrespectful to all people. Respect is measured on a balance, not a sliding scale. I am not a subject of anyones rule and will not be treated so. And I am no more important than any other person so talking up to me is equally disrespectful. I hope more people can gain this mentality as I like talking with people; not at, to, or down to.

After looking over relationships with females I can honestly say there is a lack of assertive mentality for both sexes. I'm not sure what is worse: women who treat the world like they are princesses/rulers of all beholding to none. or people who perpetuate those attitudes and never let them know they are wrong to act like that. I know men who are no better, but with our simple minds/bodies we are easily manipulated because, well, some of us are just stupid.

Of course, it is disrespectful to anyone to say that because you are an "X" you are behaving (or communicating) as an "X." But for you to say that the study of linguistic tendencies is invalid is absurd.

I have always thought that understanding the tendencies of a particular group is a good way to show respect towards that group. Each individual, however, should be communicated with (and respected) as an individual.

If I came off as rejecting the study of human communication SF I'm sorry. It is more a rejection of the attitude that it is okay to accept the lack of communication skills or the lack of ability to learn on the part of others. As a man, I am no mind reader. I can read non verbal cues and communications quite well. But I've been around too many people who expected everyone to know what they were thinking rather than vocalizing the things they needed or wanted. Even the lack of stating basic emotion between men and women has become a social norm. So much that it has leeched into romantic relations and family dynamic.

I'm sure you and your wife have a much more open communication style than in your first year of marriage. For that I must thank you and anyone like you who put forth the effort to improve your quality of life. Living by example is one of the best ideas to improve the world around you.

Ah, come on. You can't run away because I'm assuming some Whedonites don't like Twilight (I haven't read any of the threads). Some of us do. :D I actually love the books, but thought the movie was merely okay, partly because I think Robert Pattinson is pastey and gross for the most part. He's certainly no Edward as described in the book. I'm anxiously awaiting the next movie. It's not BtVS, that's for sure and people who expect it to be are being lame. ;)

After the treatment Angel received, I have a reactionary dislike of all other vampire tales. And yet, if I give them a chance, I tend to like them...which is hard for me to admit. I'm sure there are some people that hate Twilight solely because it's about vampires and they think Whedon is canon on that whole topic.

Oh...and hi guys. Zeek...congrats on the new job. That's good stuff.

NVG: men and women DO communicate differently, but that's not to say we cannot be understood by each other. Trying to understand someone (style of commuication, viewpoint, etc) is what respect in communication is all about. Lots of people haven't got that ability...even ones that think they are very open minded and accepting.

I think what's beign said here is actually all the same thing. Different people have different styles of communicating, but to say that the different styles excuse a failure to communicate is silly. ( example the constant proliferation in the media of the idea that women should expect their husbands to just know what to buy them as a gift and that they can then be hurt and angry that the husband didn't psychically know just the right thing...or the idea that men can't communicate feelings or abstract thought) these sterotypes are super destructive.

Mostly I am annoyed when the media continues to encourage the idea that there is something inherently smarter and better in being a woman... example A parenting magazing article which was titled " discipline tips to control your kids...and they work on husbands too"

Got a good example of a horrible attempt at communication. One of my college buddies called me last night about his gf getting really mad at him. Her family had to put their 17 yearold dog to sleep yesterday and she called him to ask if he wanted to come over and watch Grey's Anatomy (which is apparently code for I'm sad and need comforting). He had an appointment and said he couldn't because he had to go there. She flipped out about how he's never there for her.

I don't give either of them a stellar review, but I don't think she has a leg to stand on if she isn't willing to say, "I'm really sad and need someone to comfort me". He loses points cause he told me that he was at home taking a nap before his appointment. If you have time to take a nap you have time to go comfort your gf for a while before the appointment. He didn't think it would be a big deal cause they knew the dog was not doing well so they should have been prepared. So, I can see both sides of it, but they both need to just say what they're thinking. Jeez!

For the record I totally disagree with him about preparing to put a pet down. Even though I know my kitty is going to go in the not too distant future, I'm still going to be an absolute wreck when it happens.

I love Angel (although BtVS will always come first, then Firefly, then Angel). I have a problem with how it was cancelled and hold a grudge, therefore I immediately want any vampire show to fail because Angel wasn't allowed to continue. Does that make sense? Well, not sense, because it's kind of a stupid sentiment..but does that explain?

For example: I wouldn't watch Moonlight. Pissed me off that they were giving the 'Vampire with a soul' thing another run...and it wasn't Angel. Well, Moonlight was different, to be sure, but once I watched it, it was entertaining. (Watched it as a tagalong for Veronica Mars. It's odd how you follow actors because they were on one show you really, really liked).

As for Dollhouse. I liked it before...was entertained and could foresee some good stuff. I never, however, would've foreseen Epitaph One and after watching that am beyond excited for tonight. That ep just made me go 'Now THERE'S a kickass show.'

Can't disagree on any particular point, Zeek.

You can't prepare for a pet dying. Losing a pet is like losing a family member. I know the day I come home and my pup (I call him a pup but he's 12 years old) isn't there to stumble over and say hi I'm gonna bawl my eyes out.

Lots of women are scared to do anything close to that because you don't want to be seen as needy. ;)

I cried my eyes out when I had to put my cat, who wasn't really even mine, down. I had plans that night and still went...what a total mistake that was. :D

Pet sadness is very serious... but yes I am surprised she didn't say hey I'm really upset can you come over and I'm surprised he didn't offer hey you must eb really bummed over the dog want me to come cheer you up... they had a combined suckage score of 7.5

I left out the best part of that story btw. This is what officially sways things in my friends favor by a wide margin. They were dating long distance for a couple years. Apparently at some point in there she was sleeping with some other local dude. Their mutual friends eventually told my friend. He didn't know what to think and called me a bunch asking for advice. He decided to wait to talk to her about it until he saw her in person. He let her off the hook with the excuse of "she didn't think we were serious".

Anyway, in their argument last night she called him untrustworthy because he didn't tell her right away that he knew she was sleeping with some other dude. Now if that's not the most twisted logic ever I'd sure like to hear what is.

At the risk of being beaten from the board:

I never was a fan of Buffy or Angel. Some of the Buffy stand alone episodes are great, but with little chance to give Angel a try it seems the episode or two I saw will stand as the only examples of the show for me. I may be giving Buffy a try seeing as we have the series laying about but Firefly will stand as the reigning Whedon material for me. On the subject of Dollhouse, I find it likable with the potential to be better. Though it was a great episode, Epitaph One kinda ruined the series for me. It can be thought of as an alternate or attainable future. I was just left with holes for a possible second season story line. This may work out to benefit the second season as I have no idea where it can be going.

Back to the communication variances: I mentioned quite a while ago the idea of women being better liars and how it ties in as a primitive defense mechanism due to being the physically weaker sex. Misdirection and deception being a more effective tool rather than risking physical harm. It makes sense that some women may use less direct verbal communication as a way of protecting their actions and ideals. Some of my point may be that there should be no need for this if men and women are to truly be equal.

For some reason I've always been less attracted to women leaning too far on either side of being aggressive or passive. People with an assertive demeanor have always held a greater attractiveness to me.
