-No Buffy character tv movies(He had a few planned including Faith, Spike, and Willow) James Marsters is apparently upset with Joss. He's more than willing to do the movie, and Joss keeps back peddling.

-No "Ripper" series starring Anthony Stewart Head like he promised. I heard about this one in 2002.
2002!!!!!

-Firefly could have continued on another network if Joss could reduce the cost of the show. Joss wouldn't budge.
For crying out loud, they could have filmed the show in
black and white on location in a trailer park and I would have been glued to the screen.

-Always looking to the future. Once Dollhouse is cancelled he'll probably start a new show that is less interesting, and more mainstream. Pure speculation, but it's a hunch.

-Buffy season 8 comic book. LOL! HAHAHAHAHHAHA. Epic indeed. Epic piece of crud.

That's almost about it.

It's not like he automatically has the power and funding to do Buffy TV movies, and Ripper never got the support and again, funding needed to make it.

And the Buffy comics rock, you're delusional there.

If this one is true, this is the most upsetting. I'm an indie filmmaker. Most of my budgets sit between $20k-200k. All of my feature films except the current one have been for under $200k. Firefly could have easily been made for half the cost without compromising quality. So sad.

Ok, maybe the character movies needed funding, but the Ripper series was given the greenlight by a British network. It was Joss that decided not go ahead with it.

I understand also he has two small children and maybe would like to spend more time with his family.
We can't expect him to work 7 days a week 16 hour days. But he could at least level with his fans and tell us that is what he is doing at this point in his life.
As for the comic books, I don't know who's paying you to say it's good but it must be a pretty hefty sum of money.

I'm wondering what your source is on this. I've never heard any indications that any network said they would take the show at all. If anyone had, and said that the budget restraints were thus-and-so, I would think that's pretty standard. If someone in the business of making TV wants to chime in and say that creators get to pick their own budgets, feel free, but I somehow doubt they do.

I didn't enjoy where the Season 8 comics went. I was disappointed.

I heard about a pondered spin-off series featuring Faith and Spike, but never heard that it was anything more than an idle thought. I never heard of TV movies as even an idle thought. I would like to see something like that, though.

I heard vague rumors of a Ripper series, but heard that it had fallen through, no detail as to why.

Seems a lot of assumptions and misinformation floating here.

Doing a search, the only mention I see of Ripper being "greenlighted" is a few articles refrencing "unnamed sources" with info the BBC "would not confirm".

It's a bit of a leap to assume the production budget could easily be cut, since we don't have details on where the money was going in the first place. But in TV, a lot of the cost goes to the cast - and with a lead cast of 9.... who would everyone be willing to loose to have continued? I also know Joss has been clear that he wants to keep his productions in LA (as opposed to say, Vancouver) which is also more expensive.

There was talk of a Faith/Spike TV series, but it never really went anywhere. Brian K. Vaughn wrote a teleplay for a Faith TV movie, but that ended up being adapted for the Season 8 comics.

And I've enjoyed the comics, havn't read the last arc, but so far I like what I've read. Feel free to disagree, but it's subjective (as for pay-off, screw you oopy), and my liking it is as valid a comment as your not.

I think it is disingenuous to question and second-guess Joss's actions and motives. He does what he does, and we get what we get. He owes us nothing. And for what it's worth, I will always be grateful for what he's already given.

Everyone makes mistakes. I know I have. You can't expect someone to be perfect all the time.

As has been said, I'm happy with what we've gotten and will continue to support his works, cause he does do good work.

Bingo.

It seems like he tried to get interest in reviving Firefly by doing Serenity - he even killed off two of the minor characters (Kidding! Put down those slings and arrows!) to get costs down when they revived the series in the wake of the movies all-conquering success.

Ripper. I heard that there were talks, and they were in a serious-y direction, but never more than that.

Spike. There was indeed talk of a TV movie, but it never really seemed to go forward.

Meanwhile, don't forget Wonder Woman - Joss put A LOT of time into that one, and it ended up being rejected. He's still got to pay the bills, so he keeps looking for the next thing to work on. He's done time on Astonishing X-Men as well, among other comics. And he's supposed to have a movie in the works, too - something about a cabin, a woods, something like that...

Oh, and there were at least a couple episodes of The Office that he directed.

I'm grateful as hell that he even finds time to devote ANYTHING at all to the Whedonverse. He has, after all, pretty much wrapped up the Buffy/Angel stories, so anything we get beyond the 7 & 5 seasons of those should be considered bonus.

I would LOVE to see a Spike TV movie, or miniseries. Ditto Ripper. I'd pay money for straight-to-DVD versions. But if it happens, it's our good fortune, not any debt owed us by Joss.

The bottom line is this:

The character movies, and Ripper were quoted from Joss himself. They were both his ideas. Maybe they will happen at some point, but as of now it seems they are dead in the water. I never said Joss owed us anything. He himself said they are going to happen.....then nothing. I guess that is what gets me, because I would love love love to see them.
I guess I'm just happy he hasn't mentioned character tv movies for the Firefly verse, because I'd be waiting on pins, and needles until I saw it happen.

I can't speak to RIPPER, but I'm quite certain you're wrong about FIREFLY. Joss would have done ANYTHING to get FIREFLY to continue. In 2003-2004, I'm pretty sure he would have sacrificed small children to get it on the air.

If getting it back on as a series was an option at all, it would have happened--unless it was in a way that would have made the show unpalatable (eg, cutting the regular cast to 4 or something). Joss is the master of quality on a shoestring budget. He would not have balked for an instant.

Budget is only ever a concern when they don't want it any more; or are unsure about a next season. If FOX really wanted to continue with Firefly, that measly 1 million dollars per episode would not have been the show-stopper, guaranteed.

And nowhere, however well I searched the 'Verse, did I ever hear a rumor -- or even a rumor about a rumor -- about another network having been willing to pick Firefly up, if only Joss would make it for less. Besides, would we have really wanted that? Way I figure this, there's enough 'less' on TV; Firefly was 'more.' That's what made it special.

Again, so? I'm sure he has lots of ideas. That doesn't mean someone's automatically going to pony up the cash.

Myownself as well. Given all the potentials, everything he juggles, etc., despite how much I know Joss adores Firefly and I dream of its resurgence, I can't blame him for pursing his career/family/life rather than beating a (sadly) dead horse.

Introduced hubby to Firefly a while back. He adores it (he's 71 and not a sci fi fan..speaks to the universal appeal). He refuses to watch more than one epi a weekend, then rewatches them over and over. He also became so interested in Joss that he's now wending his way through Buffy--something I NEVER would have dreamed he'd like. He says the writing is what keeps him interested, and the humanity of the characters.

Speaks to Joss. Dollhouse has disappointed me greatly, I could only get through the first two epis. But I'll continue to follow whatever Joss does, and be eternally grateful for that one shining moment he gave his soul to Firefly ahd managed to get it on air.
