hey all,

long day again, looking forward to my holiday, going to play half life I guess but thought I'd say hi.

If you're thinking computer engineering PR then feel free to ask me any question you want given that's what I do for a living.

All right, Sweetie. I have my cheekin noodl zoop, gave this a bunch of thought, and am now prepared to answer. If I end up sounding like a bitch in any way, that's not my intention. You know I ((heart)) you. ^^

This is going to get long, folks, so give that scroll wheel a work-out.

But first...! -->
Quote:

Don't have a thing nailed down yet, aside from pretending to be a responsible adult.
ZOMG, nooooo!!!1one
You can be "responsible" without having to stoop to the level of being an "adult". XD

And second... -->
Quote:

Mechanical, you say? I was thinking about computing, but yeah I really don't have that nailed down yet.
This is vital.
Computer "engineering" isn't really in the same school as Engineering. Completely different things. Like, thinking about taking engineering courses to become a Domestic Engineer. (No offense meant, just trying to give an example.) The terms use the same word, but it's not part of The School of Engineering.

So you'll first have to determine if you want to be a Computer engineer or an Engineer. I can't help you with CE, so I'll just continue with Engineering.

Mathz, science, blah blah blah. For the most part, accredited schools don't really have "engineering courses" that don't have prerequisits, so in all likelihood, you'd have to commit to it or waste a semester or two on general math, chem, physics, etc.

Supposing you commit to that potentially wasted time and money and then commit to "The School of Engineering", you don't necessarily have to determine which path you want to take right away. A lot of the entry level engineering classes are common to all disciplines, with some exceptions.

Now, having a vague idea of what you want to do for a career will help you determine which discipline you want to focus on. You want to heal the world? Choose biomedical engineering. You want to accidentally electricute yourself because you neglected to remember that something which normally runs on a 9-volt battery ought not be plugged directly into the wall? Choose electrical engineering. You want to work at McDonald's? Choose aerospace engineering. You want to work with HVAC systems or clean room doors? Choose mechanical engineering. You want to play in a sandbox all day? Choose civil engineering. Et cetera. ((shifty eyes))

You want to make things?
Choose a different career entirely.
The likelihood is that you will not actually make things, not the way I imagine you're maybe thinking. (?) Out of school, you will be someone else's bitch, regardless of whether you do an internship or not: you'll do things for them, you'll perform tests for them, you'll write documents for them. If you go into manufacturing, you'll be stuck making sure the production floor keeps running, maybe tinker with improving processes and maintaining equipment. Research & Development is what you would want, but no one fresh out gets to do actual design work. Hell, after 12 years doing the same thing in the same industry, I don't get to do a whole lot of design work, it's mainly development (or slight re-design) of someone else's design. But at least you're closer to it all, ya know?

But back to schooling.... I recall several mini-rants (not saying that in a derogatory way) about not liking the way your teachers were teaching, or not liking what they were making you do, or thinking what they were making you do was beneath you or pointless or useless because you'd never use it in real life, etc. That, in a nutshell, is about 97% of all engineering curriculum. And after at least 4 years and tens of thousands of dollars in debt, that's really fucking annoying. XD

Differential equations, thermodynamics, statics, fluid transport phenomenon... these are not exactly courses for free, independent thinkers. (An exception is if you were to go for a pure mathematics degree. There is a beauty and art to pure mathematics that you don't really even begin to play with in engineering courses.) If you didn't like *having* to do something a certain way in your more artistic courses, you are probably not going to like engineering courses. These professors Do Not Care; it's more sort of "grow up or get out."

So while I am clearly Living TeH Dream ((choke)), I consider myself a whole lot luckier than the majority of engineers for many reasons. The really cool, really awesome, really free-thinker job opportunities for engineers are few and far between, with lots of competition.

After all that, none of this is meant to discourage you. As you said, it's good to know what you're in for. Hope some of this was informational... feel free to ask me anything...

...

Now I have to get back to saving the world.

XD

Oh you did not kill the thread:)

Hmm my brother did his internship with ThiakolATK and was responsible for things like optimal rocket placement on the space shuttle( which I found sooooo ironic since I barely deem him responsible enough to borrow my car) and now he designs processes for waste refinement into fuel and removing metals without arsenic, but I don't really understand most of what he does. He seems to enjoy it, but it does involve considerable travel and a LOT of hours and work. I know it took him 4 years to get his degree and he's a super student who flies through classes easily. Most people took 5-6 years to do it. I don't think he ever gets to design original stuff and I know free thinker is NOT something they do in engineering classes. It seemed when he talked about it it mostly was theorums, equations, calculations etc...
Not sure if that helps Rose:)

Had the annual secret santa party with friends (I was in charge of the gift coordination). I baked my first ham for the whole group. If I knew how hard it is to make a ham for a dozen people before...I'd have been making it sooner.
Also...realized the same thing for those felt coffee cozies... guess what might be showing up in folk's holiday cards next year.

*looks at calendar* It can't be nearly the Christmas....I still have everybody's card and gifts to mail out... Think anyone'll be upset with Christmas cards and gifts showing up after Christmas?

I would have thanked you sooner, but this is my first day off since three people quit, and this only because I insisted I would not work on my birthday. I so need a better job with fewer people who will walk out at the drop of a hat. Is there a career track for that?

Now that's a thought. My grandpa was a pure mathematics guy who ended up in engineering, his physics degree being useful for the calculations of what a rocket needed to do. Course things were just a teeny bit different 60+ years ago, and it probably would have worked out very differently for him today.

Well, I'm going to finish up the graphic design thing and then see what my options may be. I might just end up liking the field I'm currently degreeing for XD And hey, since I was the only person in my layout class (including teacher) who knew what a golden rectangle was and how it was utilized in layouts, maybe I'll do okay.

...and I'm reluctantly almost somewhat sure it's not all as bad as I described. There are a lot of good companies and opportunities, especially if you can find the small start-up companies. The start-ups are where all the fun and excitement resides. Heh.
