When Pain had left the room, Mal took his moment to be honest with John. "I'm not sure about her," the captain said to the man he'd come to trust, "not even a little bit. Hell, I'm more unsure of her now then ever."

"I know, Captain, I feel the same way. She's not well, and I really don't think this is the place for her."

"But you don't want to leave her," the captain said. John was always amazed by his ability to read people without the skills he and River possesed.

"I keep thinking about when we almost left Simon and River on Beaumonde. River left us and got into even more trouble. How do we know Ivy isn't going to do the same? At the same time, how do we know she isn't going to hurt someone next time she slips?"

"We don't," Mal replied, "and that places a load of discomfort on my shoulders."

"Pain can't be trusted to watch her," John said, "he's blinded by love. We need someone else to keep an eye on her, to make sure."

"You volunteering?"

"Well, I'd think River'd be good for it, but lately she's been slipping. It worries me. So I guess, yeah. I'll keep an eye on her."

"Good, now about your brother. Is he bad news?"

"Yes, but not awful news. This won't go of without a hitch, but we'll be fine and we'll get paid. That's a mite better than some of our work."

"Sure is." After a few moments, Mal went off to find River, tell her to prep the ship. John stood and watched Inara enter and talk to Pain. He could feel her concern, dwarfed only by Pain's own. He was nervous to find how Ivy was feeling, but knew he had to. Cautiously, he pushed at the front that sleep provided her only slightly prepared for whatever was underneath.
