What is a blog?

"...we're still flyin'."
"That's not much."
"It's enough." Malcolm Reynolds and Simon Tam - Serenity

Probably the most all inclusive definition would be: a journal that appears on the web. Blog is short for "web log". Basically just musings by your average joe/jane on whatever topic they feel like posted to the web on a semi-regular basis. That's my attempt at coming up with a definition that covers so many bases that it becomes meaningless .

I shaved off my beard for you, devil woman!

Isn't that what a post/thread is for?

nah. a thread is for people to have a discussion and interact with each other. a blog is more like some form of online diary. a "this is what i want to say to the world right now" kinda thing.

It all depends on the author. It can be a nearly spontaneous monologue from someone who wishes that you share their enthusiasms. It can be the work of a soulless flack in the Marketing Department of a global corporation. You read them, you choose; you may earn(sic) points, and points mean ...

A great example of a blog is Wil Wheaton's. Leo Laporte is a favorite of mine. I also blog, but I kind of ramble. There are political blogs and teen blogs about all their angsty stuff. It is an online diary or journal. We post it and the world is free to read it if they so choose. A thread is a discussion on a forum with several people involved in the discussion. We have a kind of blog on FFF.net. You can write in your daily log in the 'my firefly' section. People use newsgroups, message boards, forums, and blogs to get heir opinions out on the net. I use them all.

SKYDANCE

A thread also has a topic, and the posts are generally related (albeit sometimes circuitously) to that topic.

Each post on a Blog is unique and self-contained, like a tiny newspaper editorial.

Not a stupid question at all. I was wondering the same thing, and also thought it was also the same thing as a thread/post! So, todays lesson is, the only stupid question is the unasked one!

here's a stupid question:
the chairman of the board for fox turns to the board and says "Should we cancel firefly?"

j/k

"Could be he's harboring some resentment at us for putting his man through our engine."

Hey. I'm another one on the stupid boat. But the idea of a Blog actually sounds kind of neat. I still don't really get why we would have them on a Firefly website. But then, why not?

I think it's kinda like a captin's log or the entery that was being entered on bushwacked before the reavers came and interputed.
