Has anyone else looked at the Alliance military uniform and helmet? I think that the producers bought the old military uniforms from the movie Starship Troopers.

Only saw that movie once, so I couldn't say. But if they're trying to save money to control the budget to stay in Fox's good graces, I have no problem with that.

I suspect the med vehicle they "built" was a prop Soviet helicopter from an old Rambo movie or somewhere that they spruced up.

You do what you gotta do.

A lot of movies now use ex-East German military uniforms. They were sold off at a very good price by the united German government.

The Alliance military uniforms are definitely the uniforms from Starship Troopers with some slight changes and I think that uniforms are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the similarity between the Alliance and the Federation from Starship Troopers. Now I don’t want to start debate on the merits of Starship Troopers as a movie but I think it is interesting to look at Starship Troopers as a view from inside the Alliance system of government and look at Firefly as look at rebellious fringe to that system of government. If you haven’t seen Starship Troopers iti s worth checking it out though keep in mind that it is meant to be view as an over the top military propaganda movie for the Federation (Alliance). I hope this doesn’t rub people up the wrong way drawing such a strong connection between Firefly and Starship Troopers, I believe the writer of Firefly would agree with me if they didn’t think it would infringe on the Starship Troopers copywrite. Anyway that all I have to say, perhaps somebody could expand on my train of thought.

Yup, those are Starship Troopers costumes all right... And Firefly's not the first show to make use of them either... I hate to draw the Parallel, but Babylon 5: Crusade also used those uniforms. I think it was probably because the uniforms look pretty futuristic, they would have been availible in large quantities and also they would have been ready made and thus cheap. Better Firefly just pinches them out of stores than has to design and make dozens of new outfits on-top of what they've already had to buy.

I'm curious why they didn't make use of the weapons that go with those outfits though... Much better than SA-80s and HKs.

Twelve spheres of unendurable brightness spalled the velvety blackness of space.
The silence on Lester Tourville's flag bridge was absolute
And then the spell was broken as Shannon Foraker looked up from her console from where she had just sent a seemingly innocent command to the main computers of State Security's finest Superdreadnoughts.
"Oops." She said.

Probably because that, even though the costumes were auctioned off, the practical rifles would have been leased from someone in the first place, due to the fact that they cost a helluva lot of money, then returned to their original condition and returned when filming was over.
But I don't see why they didn't just take the L85s and the H&Ks and glue some resin parts on or something. It doesn't take that much to make a gun look totally different.
Remember the M56 smartgun and the pulse rifles in Aliens?
The smartgun was just an MG42, a steadicam harness & vest, and motorcycle parts.
The Pulse rifle was just a Tommygun and a SPAS-12 cage in an aluminum shroud painted O.D. Green.
Well, actually it was the Humbrol paint Brown Bess, but I digress.
Doesn't really matter anyway.
