HAL900X

This will be my first post on any Firefly board. I am a very late-comer. I had seen one or two episodes, or pieces of them, but at the time just wasn't drawn to it in spite of being a huge sci-fi fan. Years later the film came out, and I was taken to see it by some friends. I was blown away. Easily one of the best sci-fi films ever. Yet, even though I was again exposed to the series from time to time after that, I still wasn't really attracted.

Finally, in 2010, I ended up with the blu-ray version of the entire season, and resolved to give it one more chance. Depending on how you look at it, that was fortuitous or unfortunate. I watched every episode from beginning to end over the span of a few nights, and find myself amazed that I somehow avoided becoming a Browncoat all these years. I find myself filled with sadness for so many reasons. Sad because I wasn't there to experience the original upsurge of love for this show, sad because I missed out on the community. Sad for a lot of reasons, but none greater than the fact that this show will never have another episode.

In a way I haven't experienced since Babylon 5, I am truly attached to these characters. I am literally mourning this show, probably much later than you all, but mourning nonetheless. It's melancholy and surreal, in a way.

I think the reason I wasn't hooked from the beginning is this isn't your average sci-fi show. You have to pay attention. You have to appreciate all the detail that went in, the complete ground-up creation of an entire culture, the style of language and speaking. So much detail, from the carefully crafted sets to the intricate design of a single prop only seen for a half-second shot. Then there is the cast synergy, the real human stories and on and on.

I found myself re-watching Serenity, seeing it in an entirely new light now that I loved the show. This made me even sadder, but it's a bittersweet kind of sadness you want to experience again. You don't want to let this show go. I see clearly why there are so many attempts to preserve or continue "The 'Verse". It's attachment, emotional attachment.

I've gotten fairly involved with shows over the years, but I've never had this experience of passing over a great show for a long time, to return to it with such force. I felt I need to share that with others who "get it". Cheers, Hal.

Hey there, welcome aboard. We feel your pain, and finding like minded souls to discuss and let it all out is the best way to cope and heal.

I joined up here myself about a year ago, all sorts of things here to hold your interest. There's firefly fanfiction and art in the Blue Sun Room, and there are all sorts of topics on the forum, everything from everyday life to other television series to news about Firefly and the cast and crew. And if you're feeling brave, check into the Real World Event Discussion. Word of warning though, while it's one of the more civil political discussion boards I've ever been to, it can get rough, so make sure your skin is extra thick if you ever peek in.

Glad to have you and enjoy your stay.

Operative: "Its worse than you know..." Mal: "It usually is."

Welcome Hal900x, you are member number 38,991! FloralBunny use to do the welcome part, haven't see her around these parts for a while so I will. Here's a slightly used Browncoat from storage. Dinners at 6:00, no need to dress, strawberries and Mudder's Milk in the fridge, Ice Planets in the freezer. Watch out for the ships cat, and try not to step in her bowl. You are with the shinest peeps in the 'verse.

Hey Hal!

I joined last year and your post explains the way i feel, as well. I have never gotten involved with a story and characters, the way I have gotten involved with this one.

I never got to enjoy it the first time around, but last night I started the season, for the 7th time.

Welcome to the 'verse!

Love keeps her in the air, when she oughta fall down...
