Last night I saw an extended preview for this movie due out in May. Wow...it looks totally amazing! There are lots of surprises from what I saw, and many great actors in it. Just from the few minutes of the preview I could tell that this movie will surpass Avatar in every way possible. Not only are the effects tenfold better than the original Iron Man, but the bad guys, the plot, and the overall production quality look like nothing I've seen before. Downey's "Sherlock Holmes" was a big box office flop last year, but after Iron Man 2 gets released, there will be no doubt about Downey's dominance at least in this genre. I cannot wait to see it!

The suitcase is actually an old comic/cartoon standby; usually we see Tony open the case, revealing just the helmet and gloves (which are all that would, realistically, fit in a briefcase), then the scene cuts away before the Inexplicable Iron Man shows up.

This version actually makes sense (though this version of the suit would have to be much lighter and thinner --an emergency-only measure).

"Like nothing you've seen before?" You sound like you're on the payroll.

I mean, it looks good and all, I agree - but the plot doesn't seem to break any new ground - the production design is just a continuation of what was done before. Saying it's like nothing before is hyperbole at it's worst. Or maybe you just havn't seen many movies or read many comics - because it looks like a LOT of stuff I've seen before.

Go ahead and hate Avatar if you like, I wasn't a huge fan myself - but to say the production design in this - which is just modern tech with a slight twist (most of which has been done in comics for decades) is more advanced than creating a whole new world.... makes it pretty damned hard to take you seriously.

Hell, you say Holmes was a flop - when it pulled in a sizable profit and had a sequel green-lit right away. Even basic facts seem to elude you.

Now where did I say that? I'd surely like to see you point it out. Go ahead, I'll wait.

Simply pointing out incorrect facts and huge claims that don't hold water isn't saying my opinion is better. Heck, the only opinion I actually offered agreed with yours - IM2 looks good, and Avatar wasn't that good.

But "never seen before" is a bold claim, which is ridiculously easy to see it simply not true, that is, unless as I mentioned, you've seen almost no movies ever. Maybe you grew up in a cave, if so, my apologies.

Otherwise - Real sorry that applying rational thought is offensive to you.

Actually - some of what I wrote was opinion - but that doesn't mean I claimed it was better than yours.

The rest is rather factual. Holmes was not a flop by any financial or otherwise reasonable measure. Your or my opinion has NOTHING to do with the financial returns on the film - saying it's a flop is not an opinion, it is simply wrong. $470 million dollars on a $90 million dollar budget is a HIT. That's not opinion - that's MATH. Sorry if it vexes you.

I don't know.... maybe you don't quite get the meaning of the word opinion? Must be that cave.

And sure, maybe the plot, design etc in IM2 is like nothing YOU'VE ever seen.... but that hardly makes it all that original. As I stated, I've seen lots and lots of stuff just like it. Also not an opinion - but my personal experience.

I´m with Storymark on this one.. You wrote that Holmes was a flop, which in fact it is not. That´s not an opinion it´s a fact. And Iron Man 2 doesn´t break any new ground. Looks fun though, but I´m still more pumped for Kick-Ass, The Last Airbender, Tron, Inception and Nightmare on Elm Street.

Technically I think Jongsstraw is right. A flop is an opinion. I did a google search for movie flop equation and didn't find one. So, while it may be common opinion that a movie making money determines that it's not a flop, it's still just an opinion.

Whether or not a movie is like anything a person has seen before is their opinion as well. I didn't think avatar's effects were revolutionary at all. Others did. Nothing wrong with either opinion.

Sure, there's no equation - but there are definitions, like this one:

"to be a complete failure; fail: "

A film that pulls, even by conservative estimates including marketing costs and distributor cuts, a minimum of $170 million dollars of raw profit is - by simple definition - not a flop.

It's an idiotic stance to take.

Even then you have to define a failure and that's up to interpretation. Maybe Jongsstraw was expecting Sherlock Holmes to make $500 million. Since it failed to reach that mark it's a flop.

It's all subjective.

However, I think you can say that the studio didn't view it as a flop since they green lit a sequel. If you want to argue their opinion matters more then you're probably pretty safe.

Anyway about Iron Man 2 I'm looking forward to it, but I sorta expect to be disappointed. Iron Man was outstanding IMO. Hit on all the right notes and didn't go overboard at all. I'm avoiding the trailers because I like to be surprised when I go to the movies, but I've read enough early rumors to know who the major players are. It just sounds like there are too many of them in this movie. Hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I could care less about his expectations. Personal expectations do not redefine an established word. Words have meanings for a reason, if he was stating his opinion of it's performance relative to HIS expectations, there are words appropriate to convey such meaning. Flop is not one of them.

As to this movie, I'm really looking forward to it. I really enjoyed the first, though that mainly came down to Downey Jr's performance, as the script was so by-the-numbers and predictable that had it not had such a strong central performance, I would have been very irritated. this one also seems to follow a pretty predictable plot (if you haven't watched the new trailer - don't - it lays out most of the storyline), but it's got a great cast, so it'll probably still be quite fun.

Ok, Flop........not a flop. Let's allow the dreamweavers in La-La Land decide shall we? Hmmm!

By H-wood standards a movie is considered a Box Office Hit when it doubles the production costs.
So, let's measure.............Sherlock Holmes production costs amounted to $90M; the total Box Office take worldwide was approx $470M (Domestic take approx $208M). In H-wood this movie is considered a Box Office hit.

Does this make sense? Sherlock Holmes, according to Hollywood, was a hit when it reached $180M. This is not opinion, just Hollywood fact. I went to see Sherlock on Christmas Day (opening day) and it was SRO. By the way, both my son and I enjoyed the movie. The way the movie ended I smell a sequel (the box office numbers support this).

For me, what was interesting, was the chemistry between Downey and Jude Law - it was excellent. Seems like they were friends for years. The movie was funny and smart, not perfect but entertaining. Now this is purely opinion.

Imagine for a moment, if Serenity were to 'flop' in such a manner, not only would we get the movie trilogy, we would get the TV series back and then some. Give me that kind of 'flop' anyday.

Gentlemen of the jury, the defense rests.

Oh, BTW, saw the IM2 preview and it looks good. Well as good as IM anyway and that's saying a lot.

I'm definitely pumped about IM2, but, based on the trailer, I'm jazzed about Kick-Ass too. Tron: Legacy - without question, a no-brainer; Inception looks interesting, as does Last Airbender. Nightmare: I'm not sure just yet what to think. Need more input.
