Hi.

Long story short, I'm doing a video storyboard from the graphic novel "Those Left Behind" for a project in one of my film classes. The visuals come from scans of the graphic novel, but I need dialogue recorded. Since I'm a 19-year-old girl, my vocal range is understandably a bit limited. So I'm asking you, dear strangers, for help.

You don't have to live nearby, you don't have to own the comic, and you don't have to have professional recording equipment. You just have to be able to record in decent quality (read: no static, no background noise, no major distortion) and email me the audio file. Easy stuff. I can send you scans of the relevant pages if you don't have it.

I need dialogue in two categories: major series/film character, and random extras introduced in the comic.

For main characters:

I'm looking for reasonably close matches - not perfect, but I'd like it to be near enough in terms of tone/accent/etc. I'm at the point where I'm desperate enough to not be picky; I'd just like as high of quality as possible. Below is a list of characters still needed, roughly in order of amount of speaking. I still need any names that are bold/underlined.

Mal
Agent Dobson
Zoe
Jayne
Wash
Book
Badger
Simon
The Operative

Other random characters:

I don't need any kind of match for these - as long as it isn't too incongruous with the character, you're set. These parts are ideal for those who don't really match anyone, but are awesome and willing to help me. Again in order from most to least (though none have much):

Thug Ott
Agent 1
Agent 2
Random Guy Who Says Three Lines Then Explodes
Female Thug
Random Alliance Officer
Guy With One Line

In summary, I really need help with this, and I will love you forever if you aid me. (There may even be cookies involved.) The project is due toward the end of this month, but I need AT LEAST a week and a half to work on editing it all together. The absolute deadline for getting dialogue in is the weekend of the 17th/18th, but sooner would always be better. Comment or message me if you'd be willing to help.

Kudos to you if you read all of this - I tried to keep it short (so people would read), but it kind of kept growing.

Comment if you'd be willing to help, and I'll provide you with my email.

I can do Jayne. Actually, I've already done Jayne for my own project. I'd like to think that I didn't suck at it.

I'd be happy to record some audio for you. That isn't my normal voice either, so if you'd like, I can pick up one of the other characters. I'd probably just record it with my flip cam and extract the audio.

Oh, wouldn't it be awesome if it were that easy? I think every film student should be provided with Joss's number.

It's a shame Badger isn't from Wolverhampton or I could have done you a favour there . I might have a go at shoving a cockney accent on for you, I'll let you know how that one plays out (this should be fun).

i have a natural irish born accent, but i'm pretty good with an english accent. hence the operative role. can do a deep american accent, so maybe jayne as well. if you're on the up and up, i'll do it. i'll check back daily for your response and go from there.

Okay, just grouping all of my replies into one, in order. I'll also message anyone who's interested with my email address.

micjwelch: Jayne would be awesome. A friend had told me that he'd do Jayne, but I haven't heard anything from him since. If there's anyone else you can imitate, that would be equally awesome. (Also, yes, I would LOVE to have Joss's number. I will work with him one day.)

banksy: I may actually be getting some help from my friend who lives in Hull. It's not an exact match, but I think he can get close. You're more than welcome to try your hand at it as well, though. He doesn't really have a reputation for being reliable.

ncbrowncoat: I'll check out your message once I finish this. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Oreoisfirefly: That would be great if you could cover the Operative. I think micjwelch is going to do Jayne, but you'll be the first to know if that changes. If you're interested in adding anyone else, you're welcome to.

Thanks much to all who have replied so far - I was really starting to worry that I was going to have to cover 90% of the voices myself. That would not have been pretty.

Does everyone own the graphic novel? Like I said before, I can give scans of the relevant bits to anyone who does not.

Thanks so much for offering to do Book. I was worried that I wasn't going to get him covered, and he has some pretty awesome lines. I messaged you with contact info.

Edit: Hah. Book. Covered. I made a funny without even realizing it.

I've recorded the audio for Jayne, and I also did Ott. I've got a big family thing tonight, so I'll see if I can get anyone else to do some voices then.

I haven't gotten a message yet on where to send them though.

UPDATE: I have an amazingly nerdy family, and so the rest of the major roles have finally been filled. There are still a few minor bits that need recording, though, so anyone who might still be interested is welcome to help out.

Looking forward to getting emails, and thanks again!

Were there any more voices you need recording? I can probably dig up a few more victims - er, uh - volunteers if necessary.

mic - I think I officially have everything covered, but I will let you know if there's need of any more victims. Thanks much for your continued help.

Oreo - No worries. I'm about to have to run off to class, but I'll get an email to you as soon as I'm back.

Yellowjacket - send me an email (my address is in an earlier message) and I'll send you a scan of the page. It's actually not so much exploding as getting his insides turned to goo by some agents, but still lots of fun to be had.

Hi Livewire!

Since you've got all the parts covered, I'll throw in an offer to help cover any last-minute emergencies that may/will come up. I'm not a pro but I used to read listener e-mails and occasional articles on the Firefly Talk podcast, while it was still running. Let me know how I can help.

Are there any crew members you happen to make a close match for? My cousin and his friend are covering a crazy number of parts, and while they insist they can handle it, I'd like to lighten their load if I can.

So my Mal decided to back out on me. Meaning that I now have every single character covered *except* the one who's in nearly every scene.

...Anyone do a good Mal?

No, no. You're working this deal all crabbed.

You got to open with payment.

A shortwave regenerative receiver would sound good for simulating Cortex broadwave, tuned/modified to CB freq of 27MHz, as heard in the opening scene above. Give a variable change in audio freq response for vox and morse.

I've got a Ten Tec T1253 shortwave receiver kit, which I didn't screw up too bad. Max 22MHz stock.

Anybody know of free computer software that can simulate this effect on audio files? I.e. BFO beat frequency oscillator.
