This news hit today - so grain of salt for now - but the sites posting the news have a good track record and promise this isn't an April Fool's gag.

Quote:

Director Louis Leterrier has thrown his hat into the ring as wanting to bring Earth's mightiest heroes together under one tentpole but we are hearing it will not be his cross to bear. Leterrier mentioned a short list of directors recently that Marvel was looking at, he didn't know who else was on the list but IESB has found out one other member.

The same sources that spilled the beans to IESB about Spider-Man 4 being put on an indefinite hold back in December, have revealed that another leading contender on that short list to direct THE AVENGERS film is none other than Joss Whedon.

Please be true. Please be true. Please be true. Please be true.

I think the generally poor reviews for Letterier's Clash remake this weekend might make Joss an even more appealing choice.

"I thoroughly disapprove of duels. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet place and kill him."

I'm sorry but there is only one Avengers:

...and I'll lob a grenade disguised as a pint of milk at anyone who says different.

Not meant as a joke. The stuff about Letterier is absolutely true. Joss has a working relationship with Marvel, so it's not out of the question. The site reporting it has a solid track record and says it's not a joke (which they don't do when they ARE joking). It could be a gag, but other than timing, there's nothing to indicate it.

That's the best way to do an april fool's joke. It's pretty tough to really hoodwink people on april fool's so you have to go all out.

Now if he were WRITING, and directing it...then I'd be interested.

But that's not how the site who posted this rolls.

We'll see, but I'm betting he's in the running. It's logical, and the source does try to maintain journalistic standards. They have posted jokes today, and conceal a give-away link to separate them from their actual stories. They've also posted legit news today.

I know you like to disagree with my by habit, but other than the date, do you have any actual reasons?

Nope. It's april fool's day. That's the only reason. Of course it could be true but that's what makes it funny.

Just like the cnet post about how the ipad started out as a joke but steve jobs actually thought it was a good idea. Sounds reasonable to me.

Well, given that MadTV did a iPad sketch years ago.... that would be kinda true.

Marvel has now confirmed (as has been reported by MTV and other sites) this was NOT an April Fools day hoax - Joss is being considered for the job.

Toldya Zeek!

It´s been confirmed I believe. What worries me is that Marvel are control super-freaks so I wonder if he might have some battles with them. Hope they let him do what he wants, and he´s re-writing it which is a good sign. My only question to all of this.. Will there be a role for Summer Glau? Wasp perhaps? Nathan Fillion = Hawkeye?

"Summer Glau can simply walk into Mordor.."
