There is a lot of Buzz about the new look of Wash.

I think we will see that in the 'six months' since the events of the OIS that Wash will have become more of a Bad Ass, maybe S*it has really hit the fan.

Even Book had changed a little As Nathan said in a post, Book reminds him more of a Shaman now, and there have probably been significant changes in how the Crew is dealing with the 'verse.

Back to Wash.....
We already saw him start to get tough with Niska and his henchmen, I mean until then he wasn't one to storm the castle, but after that experience he was all 'lock n load'.

So we might find that he has toughened up a good bit, due to the events from the 'past six months'.

Any thoughts??

It's entirely possible that he will be a fully functioning Bad Ass, and I think that would rule. The potential for it has always been there, but it seemed more important to make him the comic relief. Should that continue-- Wash as the funny who tends to diffuse situations, him turning into an asskicker will be exceptionally dramatic.

On a personal note, if this new uniform/jumpsuit is part of his remarkable war past or some new form of current badassery, anything really, I may actually drop dead of lust right there in the theatre. I had a full-on disco freak-out yesterday when I first saw the picture.

If Wash has become a bad ass, I hope Tudyk's acting has improved - his Leave no man behind delivery was laughable. Watch Ejiofor, people, he'll blow them off the screen.

FOLKS FOLKS FOLKS FOLKS FOLKS. . .

Two points. . .

1: Wash is a PILOT. And speaking as a PILOT, (A Gunship pilot, did I mention? That's right. . .I fly. . .I fly gunships. . .I'm a gunship pilot. Ladies, commence to swooning) I can tell you that such comes with BAD-ASSNESS PRE-INSTALLED.

2. Folks. . .look at the pics in CONTEXT. With the exception of the. . .ummm. . .exceptional Summer Glau (drool, drool, lust, swoon), the pics are very candid and the subjects are 'mugging' for the camera. Perchance this was not a picture of "Wash" but of Alan Tudyk?

Maybe someone had commented to Alan, "Ya know. . .with those shades on, you resemble David Caruso a-la CSI: Miami" and Alan says, "Oooooh! Cool! Adam, quick! Take my picture whilst I assume a Caruso-ish pose!"

As much as I think evolving to embittered bad-assness would be an intriguing development for the character of Wash. . .I don't welcome it. I realize that it's completely formulaic, but it's nice having the 'resident goofball' on the crew. . .even if he DOES have to snap and go Tarantino on someone once in a while. Would "The A-Team" been as much fun without 'Howling Mad' Murdock? And isn't the absolute BEAUTY of his relationship with Zoe the fact that they're polar opposites. . .she's a nubian warrior goddess. . .he's a little Irish goofball. . .yet he smacks her ass and rocks her world in bed?

PLEASE tell me that someone out there agrees with me?

I personally reckon althuogh he admits himself that he is a semi muscular man, he is just that, he is not the kind of guy who will always go into a fight with a fist, he is more likely to let his wife do that. He has the potential to be tougher, but usually prefers to use humour first which could be one of the many unfathomable reasons Zoe married him against Mal's orders. Who knows, maybe she initially did it just to annoy Mal!!!!

I dont think he will be a badass any more than he was, because we already have Mal, mad bad Jayne, and Zoe, and of course Book is hiding a lot but he too is a tough cookie. I think it would be a shame if Wash was changed too much as I like the comic relief and his lightness when the others are often serious and down about a situation.

As he says to Kaylee in Heart of Gold, everyone knows I'm the funny one, and I think he just that!!

I agree w/ you on the combat pilots come equipped w/ bad a$$ installed Static. I remember a couple of pilots that flew Blackhawks when I was in the Rangers that were tough as nails and not afraid to get into the thick of things. Those are combat pilots though. I don't think Wash has ever served as a combat pilot.

If we look at Wash's character up to the point of OiS, he really only seems to touch on the warrior within once, in War Stories. Part of that was his desire to save Mal, but I think part of that was also his desire to strike back at his tormentors.

This new look for Wash does not necessarily mean his now a bad ass. It could simply be what we see, an new look.It could simply be part of the new flashy Hollywood big screen budget.

Hmmm. I see the correlation. Caruso didn't come to my mind cause I don't watch CSI:Miami. I thought Wash just flew in from Top Gun, where he graduated first in his class and left a legacy of "stunts" surpassing any that ol' Maverick pulled back in the day.

There is something sexy about a man with a wicked sense of humor. Zoe didn't like him at ALL at first - maybe she didn't want to admit it or she didn't know WHY he "bothered" her. Sometimes those initial feelings do end up turning right around... remember Buffy with Angel - "You know, I REALLY didn't like him," which was essentially a cover-up because who wouldn't have thought Angel was handsome. Wash and Zoe do seem like an unlikely couple, polar opposites on some levels, but they managed to fall for each other anyway.

I don't mind Wash getting serious and showing off his badassness. It's manly. But I don't think Joss would write the humor out of his character.

Definintely I do not agree about the David Caruso and CSI:Miami bits. Caruso and pretty much everything he thinks about sucks out loud.

What I do agree with is the official goofball - opposites attract - ass smacking world rocker that is naturally badass pilot Wash. Hell yes.

I agree with you 100%. I LIKE that Wash is the comic relief. There are plenty of bad-asses on the ship already. Wash evolved into another bad-ass would just be too zombifying. It's his PERSONALITY to be a smart-ass -- not a bad-ass -- and I LIKE his personality.

Agree. While I like that Wash has a backbone, you can't turn him into a fighter, you need the contrast of someone a little funnier and less brave, but without making him the stereotypical comic relief.

i dont really like the idea that much, i mean we already have the captain, zoe and jayne to provide the baddass-ness. wash is the main guy to provide comedic relief, thats pretty much his role in the show.(well, everyone in the show is funny cause of the writing but wash is the main guy)

keep him funny and leave the ass kicking to jayne.

BELLOVESUS

I have to say that I agree whole heartedly with Wash remaining the good ol' Wash that we all know and love. For me, Wash is my favorite, and the character I relate to the most. I'd hate to see him become just another face in the crowd by making him a bad ass. But I think we're forgetting a couple of things.

A. I don't know where this idea of Wash in the War came from, as he's stated before he never fought in the war.

B. This picture could be him just funning around, trying to look like Ice Man from Top Gun, or it could be an actual picture taken during filming. If so, it's probably just a picture of Wash during flight school, and most likely a flashback sequence, and therefore nothing to get in an uproar about.

C. This is a movie, which will probably be about 2 hours long, so we're looking at Joss having to try and cram a lot of stuff into one episode basically. So, I think that it's likely that each character could be forced to go to a place where they've never really had to go before. For Wash, that could possibly be going to a darker place inside himself, to deal with some kind of tragedy, or to steel himself against a coming challenge.

There's my 2 cents.

I think it was supposed to be laughable. That was the point of the little bitty gun he was holding. Geez, the man displays great comic irony and you slam him for bad acting.

Ooh, yeah! That little gun had me rolling on the floor laughing. It was just so very Wash, big-heart, semi-muscled. (Tudyk fans, I'm talking about the character here, so don't hang me.)

War Stories was definitely one of my favorites, so heart-breaking, and yet sooooo funny! "There's obeying going on RIGHT UNDER MY NOSE!!!"

It's on record somewhere that Tudyk wanted a big gun for that scene. He is a personable young man, but that doesn't make him a complete craftsman. I must admit that War Stories is not my favorite episode, but then I come from a culture that doesn't view the depiction of torture as entertainment.

I agree with you on that one, Staticky ole buddy. I'm commencing to swoon.

As an aircraft mechanic, I can attest that there is nothing more confident and bad ass than a pilot.
There is also nothing more arrogant and annoying than a pilot.
Oh yeah there is ... a pilot that breaks a perfectly good airplane and brings it back to the mechanic thinking his lopsided grin is going to save his lopsided ass. .... but, I digress...

His badassness is questionable, but you know, if that is an actual scene in the movie, I wouldn't doubt him falling flat on his face after trying to look badassity.

*laughs* That's Joss for you. But I just hope Wash stays like himself in Firefly and can be badass while piloting at times. Like he'll do some space trick and he'll look all badass-like, and then turn back into his humor-like self. (X__X Yes I say 'like' a lot <-This is how I usually talk..kill me [j/k])

I just hope it won't turn out to be another Wesley Price trick. Remember? He used to be quite the funny gent before turning all broody-like and stuff.

Important people don't do field work.

I disagree completely. Pilots can be the biggest damn babies on the face of the earth. They're never wrong, they're always selfish, and THEY BREAK THINGS without admitting to it. I've only met a few personable ones, and they were old as hell. Granted, I'm speaking in generalities here, and again, I don't follow them home at night. But, never in my life have I seen a group of people more coddled and kowtowed to in my life. I understand that they have a very hard job to do. I'm not trying to diminish that, but of all the pilots I've met, not one of them is a bonafide bad ass. Which is not to say I think I am either. By any means, but I, at least, have the ability to spot that I'm not.
On to Wash: I think it was a candid picture, but, who knows what the movie holds. Wash may not be on Serenity at all. He may have quit and is working elsewhere. No one knows, and that's what's great about the picture. I do agree with the ridiculousness of Tudyk's performance in parts of War Stories. But, I think that it was the writing. He looked kinda...I don't know...uncomfortable with the whole setup, and it showed.

I agree 100%. It's foolish to interpret much of anything from that picture. I conclude that he's wearing sunglasses, is clothed, and appears to be walking. What else is there to infer? What's all this talk of bad-assness? Wash is Wash.

It's at the "official movie blog" : http://www.serenitymovie.com/blog/index.php

It's the July 6 entry, which is kind of inane, but it leads to the greatest Wash picture of all time! Seriously, I've been on permanent squee.

Yep, that's gotta be a flash-back for Wash (notice the much shorter hair cut and the uniformity of that flight suit?) Sunglasses make you look younger.

What is that contraption Jayne is atop? A hovercraft of some kind? (I can ignore the crane at the bottom, for now.) He is the most in-your-face badass aboard Serentiy, but not the most dangerous.

I feel kinda sad, now, though: River looks all sane and mature. I was looking forward to watching her grow up and learn to use her craziness to more advantage. I know it's only 6 months in the story line, which does make quite a difference in the late teen years, but I can completely see the difference two years has made in her. Bet she's an even better actress now, too. Got to see her act a little on an episode of Cold Case a while back.

Thank you for the link, Sarah. I see precisely why you're enthralled.

I say that photo isn't from the movie its just AT walking around the set. But if its from the movie I say hes going to walk in to the lounge area with that flight suit and shades and everyone is going to laugh their pee goos off, then Zoe is going to pull him aside and they are going to have some wild sweaty sex cuz woman can’t resist a man in uniform.
