This is my first thread but I figured I may as well make it a conversion one. I've been able to convert about 20 people onto this show, my parents included and they never watch TV shows. I got them the DVD for a present and they've watched it at least 3 times the whole way through. Having recently been converted myself no more than 4 weeks ago I'm still working on getting the word out to as many ppl as possible. Keep spreading the word Browncoats, this story will be told!

BENDIS

I converted my 2 brothers and lent my first copy of FF to my friend who has yet to watch it; even after three weeks of having my DVD's (Lucky I have a second set! )

I have also explained the show to several of my coworkers. It is a hard show to explain though. "A western in space almost but not quite."

You know why? Because we are so very pretty. We are just too pretty for God to let us die. Huh? Look at that chiseled jaw."

I am a little embaressed by my conversion quota. I have tried, honestly. I just can't figure out what I am doing wrong.

For my first attempt I lent my recordings, of scifi's first four episodes, to one of my husbands work colleagues. The next day he telephoned work, told them where to stick their job and has never been seen since. I haven't seen my video since either . I have always wondered whether his resigning was related to watching Firefly.

The next attempt was when someone came to visit. I set up the dvd and some snacks/drinks all ready for when he arrived. Unfortunately he got stuck in traffic and arrived two hours late. I had been unable to resist both the snacks/drinks and Firefly for that long . Undeterred the next day I put Serenity on again. After twenty minutes he let out a yawn, said he was tired and went back to bed . I persisted by putting a different episode on that evening, but he announced he had made arrangements to see someone and left.

My third attempt was a get together at a friends house. I decided to hijack the event and turn it into a Firefly conversion party. I managed to get everyone infront of the tv and put on Serenity. After ten minutes someone suggested a visit to the pub and there was a mass exodus from the room .

I then downloaded five of the episodes and posted them to my brother. He loved it, as did his flatmate. However, being poor studenty types they can't afford to buy the dvd (though they can afford to go out drinking and clubbing every night) .

I really don't know where I am going wrong. I feel I am doing more harm than good. If y'all insist I hand in my coat I shall understand.

Well you're doing better than me. I am ashamed to say my current conversion quota is around about 0.

I am trying to put that right though. I'm having a firefly shindig for as many people from college as I can persuade to come. I kind of half converted my friend but then my tape I had recorded the episodes onto got chewed up so she couldn't watch the second half of the series. I haven't converted her enough to buy the dvds and she can't borrow mine because they wont play on her player so I'm gonna try and finish the conversion at a shindig. Hopefully I'll create some new browncoats in the process.

I think I'm officially at 5 now. 4 friends, and I'm working on my stepdad (who doesn't count yet). And I recently started seeing this guy, made him watch Serenity with me Thursday night. It was great to see him react the way someone should to seeing it the first time: he believed Kaylee was dead, had a "What's that???" moment when they opened the box with River in it, etc., which I never got to do myself, since the geniuses at Fox aired it last. After watching the episode, he started going on about how it's a very different view of the future from Star Trek, not a view that makes you feel as good, but he really likes it, then he suddenly goes, "How the hell did this get canceled?"

He may be a keeper.

In my house, both my wife and my son are now fans. My daughter will watch it when one of us is watching, but claims she's not really a fan. I've also converted 7 friends (four of whom now own their on box sets).

Converts to date = 10 confirmed Browncoats. Still working on the daughter, but she just discovered boys (HELP)!

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

woah, you sure do work fast. i got mine in the end of march and then spent the two weeks after that just watching it and not even thinking of letting it leave my sight.

Since then i've had plans for tons of people coming over to watch but they always fall through.

so i've converted one, and am in the middle of converting another as we 'speak'

Yesterday, when we were on the bus, my four year old suddenly began singing 'the hero of Canton'.

Later when I gave them each a treat my two year old shouted 'shiney'.

OK, after we closed on the house and got some $$$, I bought 10 copies of the DVDs to give out as prezzies to folks.

Now I only have my original I bought back Dec 9th.

I have allowed my set to be borrowed 7 times by folks - not including the ones who got a set as a present. That would be double counting!

Welcome to the board Jmduke. Glad to have you w/ us.

Your advise on spreading the word & converting all we can is good and something many of us have been saying since the DVD set came out back in December.

Personally, I have converted eight people. I am still working on several, and am always looking for a way to work the show into conversation to pitch it to other people.

Seems you have run into some brickwalls Wren, but keep trying. Doing the impossible makes us mighty!

I have found the best way to convert people is to approach the subject in a casual sort of way. Have your prospective convert (or converts) come over for a drink, dinner, or what have you. When you are relaxing in the living room, ask them if they care to watch a movie. If they say yes, pop in "Serenity". While you are setting it up, tell them a bit about how much you like the show and how a movie is in the works. This should pique their interest enough to get them to watch the show.

My husband converted me, but he is not a true fan himself. Does that seem right to you?

I have converted 2 and interested many, many people. I have my next convert in my sites.

I also count my two children (aged 7) -- who are not yet allowed to watch Firefly. I let them watch a few snippets of the DVD, but the actual show has content that is not appropriate for their age. They love Firefly, what they have seen of it, and can't wait for the rite of passage that will be their chance to actually see a whole show.

Well, I've just had it confirmed that I've gotten at least two people to buy the DVD's based on playing in my Neverwinter Nights Firefly module. Both those people have really enjoyed the DVD's (of course!).

I've also had at least two other people who played in the module claim they're going to buy the set.

That's one of my goals in the Neverwinter Nights project: a guerilla campaign concept of finding converts in the roleplaying (Neverwinter Nights, mostly) community, and even getting THOSE people to run their OWN Firefly games, thereby spreading it further...muahahaha!

It's got several haks - a LOT of custom content is required - but it runs well DM'd (it requires a DM), and I'd recommend it to anyone either wanting to run a small group through a Firefly game, or better yet, someone wanting to create their own campaign or single-player module.

There are a few minor bugs I'm working on, but you'll never notice them playing through it (we've run it many times without incident).

Well, about a year and a half ago I began converting several of my coworkers to Jossverse fans. We had weekly "Buffy Lunches" at my office. I then got them hooked on Angel. I of course added Firefly to the list and we started with my VHS tapes from the original broadcasts, switching to the DVDs once they came out. So that's 5 people at my office completely hooked and lovin' Firefly (men and women, white and black, ages ranging from early 20s to mid 40s). They're all so sad that there weren't many episodes to watch but excited about the movie. We've already talked about going to see it as a group.

Next I plan to introduce my best friend and her husband to it, as well as some of my other groups of BtVS/AtS converts.

Hmmm...well, I work full-time and have been promoting the hell out of the Firefly DVD set since we got it in (thanks to me). Two of our regulars rented it. One of them works at a local theatre; before going in to see "Fahrenheit 9/11" last Friday, I asked him what he thought. He said he can't wait for the movie! Another guy who gets all the new releases every week came in today with his wife and I told him how well-written, witty, and character-driven the show is. I embellished alot. He took it home and as they were checking out he said, "We're watching this first. All of it." Also, another customer wants to rent it when it comes back. I'm doing my best! :)

So far - none, but i have 3 converts in the pipeline.

My father who doesn't actively watch TV much, and my Mother who is currently into C4's Big Brother *yawn*. They've seen Serenity and The Train Job, both of which they thought were good, but I wouldn't class them as truly converted yet. On the other hand, my Mother who hates comedies, laughed at several key funny moments in Serenity and Train Job, so I take that as a good sign.

The third is a friend from work. Odd because he asked me about the series, I didn't know much about it then (had only caught a few minutes of OiS on Sci-Fi channel), so intrigued by his description I bought the DVD boxset. Totally converted having watched all episodes over a weekend I called him up and told him he should buy it. He said "Yeah Yeah maybe", so of course I went into overdrive...

What finally convinced him was when I sent him a whole bunch of the best quotes... How could he not want to watch to find out what "What y'all order a dead guy for?" means?? He's had the DVDs for over a month and still not watched them. He's got Stargate, Buffy S7, and Angel S4 to watch first. As he watches very little TV each week it'll take forever!

He did say that he was waiting for the winter months and longer nights, but think he's just winding me up (it's working). I take as a good sign though that he emailed me yesterday saying he's heard about the movie, and was there going to be a trilogy...

The problem with this is, where exactly do you draw the line? Like, do you count people who wanted to see it but wouldn't have if you hadn't pushed them? Does it matter if they used your DVD set or rented it at your insistence? What about the converts of converts? Do they at least count a little?

Ultimately, I ended up counting people who bought or rented it specifically at my recommendation (whether they'd heard of it before or not) and people who only got to watch it because of my DVD set, but not people who watched it some on TV and only got to see all of it because of me. None of my converts have really converted anybody yet (although some of them are iffy-- like, they're sort of mine but sort of my mom's), so I don't know how that should be counted.

So with all that, I've got 16, I think.

Of course, my ex-girlfriend bought me the DVD set... so maybe she's the one who deserves the credit.

Two weekends ago was my birthday in which I invited people over for a firefly marathon. That day I was able to successfully convert both my brother and sister, one of my cousins (maybe two), and at least three friends, many of the guests had already seen most of the series. I've talked it up to everyone I've seen, my next targets are co-workers and parents.

Oh and I went to a sci fi con last weekend (in Bloomington, MN) where a panel was talking about the works of Joss, and was able to plug the release date of Serenity, which got an entire room full of people excited.

Just trying to help the cause.

BENDIS

My friend who borrowed my first set finally watched them and loved them (after three more weeks) and let his roomate watch them who also loved them. I then took my returned copy over to another friends place and we watched most of them together and he watched the last five episodes on his own. At the beginning he was all like, "Oh this sucks, it's so slow." "Why are they using western guns." "What's with the chinese, it sucks." Then he called me up after he watched the last eps on his own and was like, "I hate you. What am I supposed to do now? You got me to like a show that isn't even on the air no more so I can't watch anymore episodes and I want to!" So suffice it to say he is hooked to. So that makes 2 brothers, and three friends.

You know why? Because we are so very pretty. We are just too pretty for God to let us die. Huh? Look at that chiseled jaw."

IRISANNE

I've converted at least NINE--three couples and three colleagues--and it was so EASY. I just gave them the DVDs and got out of the way. Heh-heh.

Next thing I knew, my dad was lending his DVD set to his buddy, my office-mate had Firefly wallpaper on her computer, and another friend and I were making plans to travel to the BDM. These people aren't like, "Yah, that's a good show." They're HOOKED. It never fails.

Tell a lie. It failed just once. I lent the first DVD to a guy at work who just Didn't Get It. (Maybe he worked for Fox in another lifetime.) He said he found it derivative (Me: What?) and too geared toward women (Me: WHAT?! Are you out of your MIND? GIVE ME BACK MY DVD!) Yeesh.

But everyone else has been captivated. If I play my cards right, I can see the BDM six times--once with each of them. I can hardly wait!

POPEBOB

Well lemme tell ya. I live in a smallish town. It's made a might smaller because of the people runnin' it. So people that would watch Firefly, or ANY Joss Whedon show are slim pickin's. When Firefly aired we had Four people watching it. Once the DVD came out I managed to recruit four more Browncoats. I'll be lending it to someone else at work. He caught a couple episodes but missed a lot in between them and then it was gone. So heres his second chance

im just doin' my part. Trying to get everyone geared up for the Big Damn Movie.

Ahhhh.. Curse you sudden but inevitable betrayal!!

1. girl friend, watches very little TV or movies but is very into multiculturism

2. friend, he's very into independent films and crime drama, some sci-fi but not TV sci-fi

3. friend, he watches mostly popular TV shows but is also a fan of westerns

4. friend, she watches mostly quirky animated shows (i.e. Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Sealab 2021, basically stuff on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim lineup) and Japanese cartoons; she is not really much of a convert but she has only seen the first DVD so I still have to get her to watch the rest

5. friend, big Star Wars fan. Before he started watching Firefly, he was somewhat reluctant. Now, he can't wait to finish the DVD set after having watched the first 2 DVDs

I'm in competition with the guy who converted me. I've got a cool half dozen converted and working on another ten or so.

I am so excited by the series I've been showing it to potential converts in my free time, yet haven't had time to watch the last two episodes!

I don't see any others from Denver on the board, but soon we will be many.

"Haven't you killed me enough today?!"

JIMGOINGS

I have converted 3 of my friends. It was fairly easy as we're all into geeky things so they were very receptive to watching the DVDs with me.

I have yet to meet anyone who doesn't like Firefly. I'm sure they're out there, but I haven't run into them.
