Does anyone else find distaste in the publication of viral marketing material to an existing fan-base? Specifically, the inclusion of point earning (sic) recruiting links to the Universal site in threads on this site. Seeking to exploit members of this community does not feel very communautaire to me.

I worry that the point earning system will further increase rifts in the "Browncoat" community. We all know that some rifts already exist, but why try to create more?

I don't have a problem with it and I am quite happy to help fellow browncoats gain points. If I did object to it, then I just wouldn't use the links. I would object to it being banned though because I don't like other people thinking they know what is best for me. I want to have the choice.

I don't see how the inclusion of point earning links is exploitive of other Browncoats. I was happy to join the Universal site through a link and help a fellow member on their way towards a t-shirt. If you are a member of a community you should be willing to help others in that community.

Plus, some of the links posted don't gain the poster worthwhile points because they live outside the States, so can't claim anything anyway. Others are planning on using their points to get merchandise for fellow members that can't claim due to where they live or lack of points. I think that's really shiney of them.

The use of points will only drive the community apart if the community lets it. I haven't seen any sign of that. If it did happen, then I wouldn't want to be a part of that community anyway.

Instead of people complaining about the system they should either ignore it or join in with the fun.

I'm with you on that one Purplebelly. But I'm happy to just ignore it. Apparently it's a pretty standard marketing strategy to get fans active in promoting the movie. They obviously don't realize how motivated Firefly fans already are.

The point system just seems like patronizing nonsense to me, but apparently some of the people over there get a kick out of it. I see no reason to rain on their parade.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I agree Sarge.

I guess Universal did not have any idea of the dedication of this fanbase, or their willingness to promote the BDM.

As far as the points system goes, to each their own. I think it is great that many are using their points to get merchandise for those that can't get it for whatever reason. I really don't buy into the points thing. If I get them great, if not, oh well. I am still spreading the word on the show, DVD set, and the movie. The continuation of Firefly is all that matters to me.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I think it is in poor taste for someone to post a link here in a thread, since whatever recruiting is done from this site should benefit Haken. If they want to recruit other Browncoats they should be doing it on other sites and through email.
