All I can say is whoooaaa...Shiny! Just go and buy it!

If the first two companion books were about the mind and heart of “Firefly,” then “Firefly: Still Flying” is definitely about the soul of the acclaimed Joss Whedon TV series, which as we all know by now, FOX had prematurely canceled seven years ago after its 13 episodes run. True to the Firefly spirit, the legacy of “Firefly” lives on in its loyal fan base of Browncoats, and it is this fan base that this latest volume from Titan Books pays tribute to.

Filled with loads of never been seen photos and information within its glossy 160 pages, the highlight of this slick volume are the four brand new stories written by past "Firefly" scribes, Jane Espenson, Brett Matthews, Jose Molina, and Ben Edlund. In the case of Edlund, he even provides readers with illustrations in the form of a children story titled, “Fun With Dick and Jayne.” That title alone is enough to make a reader scan quickly through the pages and flip directly to Edlund’s story, but I doubt if it's even possible without coming across something else first that a reader just can't resist. I couldn’t do it, and I blame it on the pages about Monkey Shines. Yes, you read right—it's the monkey fault.

The book is divided evenly into sections about the individual Firefly characters, background info on the production designs, costumes, and props; and the writers' personal insights into the development and writing process of the series; all of which are nicely separated by the four stories from the scriptwriters.

In addition to the material written by the book's author, there are quotes by fans taken from various fan sites, conventions, and other fan based sources interspersed throughout the book--giving the reader a sense that the Firefly fandom had a part to play in the book itself.

As a lasting tribute to the fans, the book ends with a section specifically about the Browncoats (some in space, I might add), their conventions, and all the charity work they’ve done. Written about also are the various Firefly merchandises and fan projects currently in the works, including Quantum Mechanix's amazing Serenity replica and the fan film, “Browncoats: Redemption.”

One thing is clear after reading the entire book, the legacy of “Firefly” will continue to live on in its fans—the Browncoats. “Firefly: Still Flying” is a testament to that and is well worth every cent spent on the $19.95 price.

Oh! Here's a good one.

Platonist and I, we're kind of Mal/Inara shippers, and it occurred to us that we might therefore have a bias that may prevent us from seeing clearly.

And, of course, shipping is much, MUCH less important than figuring out what's going to happen well in advance of it happening!

So I pose a friendly question to Mal/River shippers. It occurred to us that there are three kind of nice moments Mal and River share in the story Crystal, more moments really than River has with any of the other crew (Simon gets two).

What do you read into this?

Wouldn't there be a fight first and an attempt to take Jayne into custody? I mean, Casey *IS* intelligence, right? And Jayne's a mercenary on the wrong side of the law? The first time they'd met would be on opposite ends of sniper scopes. The second time they'd meet is 'cause Casey found out who he was from the first time and tracked him down.

But after the fight and the handcuffs, MAYBE a conversation, since it couldn't be lost on them that they look like long-lost brothers. Then beer, guns, and womanly figure appreciation.

Yay! My copy finally came. And I very much enjoyed all the stories.

@Bytemite - I think you and Platonist can relax on the Mal/River thing, I didn't get that at all....it seemed more like a continuation of the movie theme, where River and Mal are the characters whose perspectives we see through the most.

Although I bet that last story didn't make you guys happy :/

I did adore the last Simon/River moment in Crystal though. Those two always manage to warm my cold little heart.

The last story isn't real. Apparently Mal has a vivid imagination.

It's not that I'm worried about Mal/River, I mean, I can definitely see a future where River, like, COMFORTS Mal or something.

I admit that Mal/River doesn't float my boat at all (even in that possible future), but I'm realistic, and I can accept that it could be a possibility, since there IS a Mal and River focus to the series. And I'm also willing to accept Mal/River fans like them together. So we can coexist, and I'm not asking what I did to put something over on them, I genuinely think there might be Mal/River undertones here.

Though technically, there's also potentially Rayne undertones as well.

Darn it, how do you do invisitext? I thought the last one was open to interpretation on that point..I read it as a flashback at first, but I just went back and skimmed it again and now I can go either way. Which is good, because my Interpretation:A was a little depressing;)

Still not seeing any River-shipping in Crystal though...but for River-shipping fans, as bizarre as I find them, I'm sure they can pull something out of it:) Come to think of it...could probably pull one or two more less conventional River-ships out of it too...CHRIST NOW YOU HAVE ME THINKING ABOUT IT.

There's probably plenty of foreshadowing in Take the Sky. I doubt things will happen exactly as depicted, but yeah, there's very likely hints. If it has consistency across Crystal as well, it's probably a very good hint.

I've read and enjoyed these stories several times now, and I don't think they were meant to be the definitive collection of "shippy tales from the verse.”

They're just okay stories with well written voices of the characters we’ve come to love.

None of them change canon drastically or offer information we didn't already know.

And, yeah, the third one is sad, but it does change tense at the end, so my suggestion is to, take it with a spoon full of sugar, and buy the book.

Well, okay, the only shipping in the Wash Kaylee one is a dash of Zoe/Wash here and there and a couple solid Zoe/Wash paragraphs at the end. The River one is pretty open ended, shipping wise, something for everyone, though it's a heavy emphasis on Kaylee/Simon. The last one is strictly Zoe/Wash, Kaylee/Simon, and Mal/Inara.

Haha, it just occurred to me. Mal ships Kaylee/Simon. I guess technically EVERYONE does, though. 'Cept maybe Jayne...

Omg, you're right, he does! LOL. Although in Jayne's case I can see him installing a camera in their bunk and trying to sell vids on the cortex for fun and profit.

Yeah this was definitely a fun book over all....but did anyone else think the whole interview with the stand-in guy was a little like...wow they are really searching for material here...

The only problem is the celebrity thing contradicts the end of the movie, where Mal says the verse is going to turn over and go back to sleep, and in which the Operative keeps their involvement hush-hush.

But then, the story kind of contemplates the worst case scenario, for Mal.

And celebrity-dom is not completely impossible. I mean, Jayne accidentally dropped some money on some people and became a hero that way. But it could only happen if it becomes KNOWN who did the broadcast. People could probably figure it out, but I don't imagine the crew stepping forward to take credit, if Mal can keep Jayne's mouth shut. And Jayne's becoming a little more loyal anyway, judging by how he (eventually) goes along with Mal's plan to go into reaver-space and then to broadwave the fate of Miranda.

I've been living with my parents for the last 4 years while I study so I get the horror of that too. I'm nearly 41 and in their eyes I'm about 12. but kudos to them for letting me move in otherwise I wouldn't be able to attend uni to become a speech pathologist.

Hmm... I can only remember of hearing a credit card company get hacked once in the last five years since I started paying attention.

The big problem, of course, is sites that would sell your information to any one who wants to buy it. Of course the biggest offender IS the credit card companies themselves, which can happen offline as well as on. They do have some interest in making sure the buyers don't out and out steal money, because that would get them a bad reputation, generally they sell to retailers who send you crap you're not interested in. But it isn't always the case that people buying your information are representing themselves honestly.

If you want to hide your bank accounts or credit cards when making online purchases, paypal is a good choice. Most places you can buy online from have a pay pal option, too, which makes things easy.

Also, did you have any computer viruses or malware problems at about the time your credit information got stolen? Recently, an increasing number of malware packages come with a key logger. The malware will change your internet settings to a proxy server, where everything you type gets uploaded, so someone who knows what to look for can often find your information easy if you're not careful.

Malware removal doesn't come with most anti-virus programs, which is suspicious in its own right, because it suggests some big players on the internet are complicit in malware distribution and that they might have deals with anti-virus companies. There's some evidence that google's ad affiliate is one of them, not surprising because of the tracking bullshit they pull on you to try to market specific ads to you.

There are some good free anti-malware programs though. The ones I'm most familiar with are malwarebytes and spybot search and destroy.

Using firefox with the adblocker and noscript addons will also help prevent your security from being compromised. Microsoft IE has huge exploitable backdoors. 9_9 Another sign they're all complicit...

Could Jayne have had a childhood "friend" (kid he bullied around into doing awful stuff and was generally a bad influence for) who was like Wash?

Just an interesting thought. I like imagining how the backstories of the characters might tie into the relationships they currently have with the crew.

My brother had his debit number jacked at a restaurant and they wired $1500 to someone, so it doesn't really matter,'net or not anymore, but I'm still leary- I don't even pay bills online.

I'm sure it's hard for your parents to look at you and see anything but "child! have to help child!" Now that my kiddo's doing more things by herself it's become a shear act of will for me not to wanna still help her get dressed, ect. But it's super nice they support you, though.
My mom kicked me out at 18 and a week and thoroughly encouraged me not to go to college as "Judgement Day is close at hand so why bother" OYE_VEY! Would liked to have gone but at the time I had NO ONE and NOTHING. Will have to try harder in my next life...
