ok so I was reading that dusty bottoms blog over on serenitymovie.com, and noticed he mentioned veganism; "But even more shocking than the lack of a vegan alternative" (even if its ever so slightly).

So that got me thinking, are their any other vegans (me being one) in the firefly community?

Vegan since '95, vegetarian for most of the rest, minus a childhood of compulsory cube steaks and ground round. Got nothing against the meat eaters here, just got no interest in eating animals.

I'm a card carrying member of PETA -- The People for Eating Tasty Animals. I figure if the gods hadn't meant me to eat animals, they wouldn't have made them so damned tasty.

Our bodies were designed by nature over millenia. Our ancestors gnawed on bison bones and ate berries. I figure that evolution and nature know what they were about. My body needs meat and veggies. Who am I to stand up against nature and say "bite me"? Or something to that effect.

My friends that are veggies or vegans know that I respect their beliefs and when they come to visit, their plates (and mine) won't be bearing anything that ever had a face.

i dont disagree, i was just wondering if there were other vegans on the board, .. thats all

how come when i mention im vegan (or even mention veganism), people have to explain their ethical reasonings as to why they are not? I dont mind people who arent vegan, vegetarian or anyhting of the like, it doesnt bother me, i do it for my own personal beliefs and try not to force those beliefs onto others. I believe in respecting everyone and there decisions (inless it hurts others of course).

Not vegan, but what is clumsily called an "ovo-lacto vegetarian" ... though fairly light on the ovo and the lacto. Just can't pledge to a life without ice cream and proper pizza ...

I don't mind what anyone eats ... I hear humans taste like chicken ... mmm, chicken ...

But lest we get into evolutionary arguments brought up above, I'll take my dull, tiny canine teeth, my digestive system that handles meat so poorly, and my really poor adaptation to (unarmed) hunting, and go heat up a soyburger...

Lastly, I'm reminded of the Simpsons ep that guest-starred famed nature boy Ed Begley Jr. .. close paraphrase:

Lisa: I'm a vegetarian, too, Mr. Begley!

EBjr, contemptuously: I'm a fifth-level vegan ... I don't eat anything that casts a shadow.

Actually, humans are more likely to taste like beef or bear, depending on their diet. Vegans and vegetarians are more likely to taste like beef. Omnivores and those who tend to eat more meat than veggies or even cannibals are more likely to taste like bear meat, I would think.

That aside (and back to the topic at hand), can't go as far as to say I'm a vegan, or even a veggie head. Let's put it this way: If I switch the amount of meat and veggies that I eat, I could be pretty close to a vegitarian.

You folks want to eat nothing but veggies, fine with me. Leaves more steak and pork chops for me.

If God didn't intend for man to eat cows and pigs, he wouldn't have made them out of meat.

Actually, Man Meat tastes like a very very very greasy tallow-filled burger. It's disgusting. Maybe someone anorexic would be a better eat. But it's really grossly fatty otherwise.

My family is all ovo-lacto vegetarian - heavy on the milk (about 3 gallons a week between the 2 adults and 2 kids), but no fish, no chicken, no deceased animals (except for rennet in the cheese...sigh...).

As for actual VEGAN Browncoats, I work with someone who's family is all vegan - two adults, two kids.

Yay, veggies! Have to say, though, Firefly doesn't seem to really push the vegetarian agenda (compared with, perhaps, some of Trek lore on the subject).

I wonder how you can afford to be vegan? I'm a vegetarian, and I tried being a vegan for a while. It's just too expensive for me (for the moment). I live in Holland, milk costs 50 cents, while soy-milk costs about 2 dollars, the same goes for all the other soy stuff. I'm still a student, so can't afford to go to the special shops anymore. If you want soy stuff here you need to go the the really expensive grocery stores. I do think it's wise to make sure you still get the protein from the soy you'd normally get from the milk, butter and cheese. So a serious question: how can you afford to be a vegan?
Ohhh and I don't even wanna know why someone's question 'are there other vegans out here' turned into a discussion about how human flesh tastes

Hey, poor college student replying again. Erm, at least where I live, I dont' find it that expensive to be a vegan. I mean, I guess it would be somewhat if you're comparing buying fresh vegetables to hamburger helper, but no one lives on just one thing. Here, soymilk and such aren't too expensive, but i don't exactly drink gallons of that. :) I find that a lot of times, meat and meat alternatives are similarly priced. There are plenty of cheap things you can buy. Very few vegans actually LIVE on vegetables. I know I don't. I shop as cheap as I can... I buy veggies at the farmer's market from the local people and then suplement with what's at the store.

Also, as far as protein, you should look at how much protein is in stuff that you wouldn't expect--like fruits and veggies. I was surprised, but the fact is, you don't need to eat 3 steaks aday to get what you need. I hate having people tell me that i need to be careful, because i've been living this way most of my childhood/teenage years, and I'm pretty healthy. People say I need to watch my iron, but I've never had issues with it when i give blood. I have plenty of energy and spend my days running around after 12 year olds at the camp I'm working at this summer.

And I guess as far as the meat eater's posts on this thread, I don't have time to enumerate the ways I disagree before bed. I know many people, some fairly die-hard meat eaters, who have become vegetarians because they think that the treatment of animals is obscene and wrong. I think that it's important to at least be aware of the situation--the decision you make is your own, but I can't deal with people who choose to turn a blind eye to suffering and things that bother them. (I definitely know some people who are like, "oh, I think factory farming is so wrong, and I could never kill anyhthing, but I don't want to think about it...")

I'm a member of the REAL Peta, and I get plenty of flavor and variety in my meals without animal products.

But hey, I didn't start this conversation, I'm just replying.

Not a Vegan, but I have quarrel with them folks that eat thataway. Myself, I grow my own beef. One steer at a time. That way, I know that he is 100% Organic. I feed him organicly grown hay (no pesticides) and organicly grown cracked corn (*again, no pesticides). And Dinner the Steer sure is tasty! (I name them all Dinner).

The only thing I dislike about the Veggie Community is when someone is wearing leather, be it shoes, pants, skirts, purse, thong , or wahtever and starts to talk to me about how eating of beef is terrible and how the treatment of animals is inhuman! Well, I guess it would be, seeing as how they are not human... and as far as cattle are concerned, we humans have BRED themaway to be both tasty and upid-stay. Its best to think of them as Carrots that walk around than think of them as puppy dogs.

That's my take on it, and like I said, I have no quarrel with thems that live their life the way they want. Just dont try convertin' me. (as a famous line from a GREAT show "just keep awalkin' Preacher Man")

I'm all for being a Vegan, but he also doesn't eat fish or tomatoe (I think)there's others too. It just makes me all worried that he's going to starve from not having too much of a choice in food I__I;; (even though I know it's not true)

I'm an ex-vegan....mainly for 3 reasons:

1) being the only vegan that you know, it's REAL difficult...(I was a vegan for 2 years)
2) It is expensive....mainly because alternative methods of eating, hell, eating "healthy" in general is damned expensive..

3) I wanted to kill people. Not that I have anything against meat eaters (obviously, I am one), but I went out of my way to NOT let people know that I was vegan, because when it slipped out, you get lectures/debates/arguements from every motherf****** meat eater in the area.

This thread is the perfect example. The person asked if there were any other vegans on this board. That was IT. The person didn't ask for political debate, didn't ask WHY you ate meat, the person asked if there were any other vegans.

But of course, they must proclaim they eat meat, make their little F****** jokes, and give you their opinion, like you really gave a flying f*** what they did to begin with.

So, I gave up veganism to avoid jail time from smashing people in the face with a f****** hammer.

I'm a vegan. It's pretty damn easy for me. Considering meat and milk are pretty expensive anyway. I used to eat lots of meat (after I gave up dairy for health reasons), then I gave up meat a little more than a year ago, and now I try not to buy crap that was tested on animals. The immune system crash is due to the cleansing process that your body was beginning to go through. I went through the same thing (especially because I actually went through a cleanse right when I ceased eating meat). In November, I was diagnosed with IBS (blame goes mostly to the antibiotics in non-free range meat). The term vegetarian is so loose now, it seems just to mean someone who doesn't eat red meat. It's stupid. I've defended myself on a number of cases, but not much more than I do because I'm an atheist. The bottom line is that you are going to deal with dumb-asses everywhere you go. They always have to get their two cents in. The same thing happened when I posted a thread asking if there were any atheist users on the site.

And I totally agree with Saint. I saw a video of the treatment, and wanted nothing to do with that business, and I used to love meat. I even got my girlfriend to break her vegetarianism for a brief period of time. She changed back when meat got too expensive for her, and I suppose her bleeding heart got the best of her as well. So now we're both vegans, and she makes killer food (meals, cookies, cakes, and other sorts of deliciousness). I don't miss animal products at all.

I'm not a vegitarian because I love animals but because I HATE plants.
