America loves a winner!

Love it

Mal's goading of Wash and getting him pissed off at him, and there by keeping him from completely breaking down.... brilliant.

Still, not easy to watch.

Absolutely love it, and not for improper and impure purposes.

The scene demonstrates distills Mal's finer qualities. It taught us that 1) Mal doesn't break and (even if he screams like a girl) and 2) Mal won't let his crew break, either.

And also, it introduced one of the best villains in the 'verse!

(one of the) Reason I ask is it was my turn to supply the movie and of course I brought my shiny set o' firefly. Group flat-out refused to watch War Stories because it was "stupid" and the torture scene was "super corny".

I just wondered if it was just me thought Mal was trying to get Wash mad enough to not break down.

Then again, they did want to watch Heart of Gold.

So my base could be completely off.

I love War Stories, it's one of my favourite episodes and a lot of that is the torture scene. I don't know why but I love a beaten and bleeding Mal but Wash with his "he's not getting days" is pretty terrific too.

I liked the scene b/c of what it showed us about Mal's character, however I did think the execution was a little hammy. Alan and Nathan were camping it up a bit, or that's how it came across.

Yes, diabolical!

Folks think Adelei Niska (jew Michael Fairman) had a Nazi accent, but it was Communist Russian:
http://www.fireflywiki.org/Firefly/AdeleiNiska

Commie Russia was founded and run by jews, especially the gulag death camps, according to Nobel Prize winning gulag slave Alexander Solzhenitsyn. As a US Air Force fighter pilot in the Real World, Mike Fairman hates Commies.

In 1999, he placed 6th in his age group in the Body for Life Challenge, a national physical improvement contest. He has a son, Jeremy (34), and a daughter, Sky (8). You can see him on The Young And The Restless.

I'm pretty sure that villain was introduced in the first aired episode of the series.

This is not my favorite scene. The episode in general is not my favorite. It's not my least favorite, either, but it isn't in my top five. I wouldn't say that's because it's corny, though. I think it went on a little too long, I think the actors were tired and maybe not performing at their best, and Niska's near-expressionless enjoyment was not quite creepy and not quite... whatever the antonym of creepy is.
I thought the episode got interesting when Zoe walked in to do the exchange. Up until then I was not so interested.

Ack, I missed this yesterday somehow, even though I was looking for it. o.0

Hmmm... It's a very uncomfortable scene, obviously. Part of that's the torture, but, part of it's also kind of the electricity thing, makes it feel kind of silly. The absurdity of Mal and Wash's fight, while intentional, kind of highlights the absurdity of the torture, rather than juxtaposes the two wildly different moods (light banter, dark torture).

I forget what language it is Niska speaks, but it's not straight Russian. It's something from one of the Former Soviet Republics, probably Chechnya. Which itself is a stereotype stemming from a long and illustrious history of Chechens in crime.

He might be Jewish, though, they do orbit the planet Ezra.

Probably less relevant than he's a stereotypical crime boss.

I think it was a good scene, probably one of the most revealing about the characters of Wash and Mal. It was necessary and deep.

I still don't get why people would want to watch Heart of Gold over War Stories, even though its an okay episode. Its kind of heartbreaking, though.

Nothing in the 'verse can stop me.

Bytemite: wasn't Niska speaking polish? B/c I think the actor's polish...

Fun fact - he took an acting class with Miss Norma Jean herself back in the day, according to someone's old con report :)

PN, I want to meet the real you.

well...yes, we met Niska earlier, and knew who he was when he got his torture on. Didn't feel like I met him, or wanted to kiss him, however, until he started torturing Mal and Wash. The real Niska wasn't introduced until he met the real Mal and Wash, you see?

Also, I hereby claim Niska for the Joos.

Is it wrong that I like Niska, for his choice to risk blacklist by the Juice for The Reflecting Pool?

The torture scene? Where Mal wants to know if Niska is going to start torturing him by starting a Book Club? Wacky fun.

I love how Joss mixes dark and light, it is his particular genius. I appreciate how far he took it in this ep. I certainly wouldn't cut the scene for the world. It's truly unique.

My problem is, my discomfort is not caused by scary torture, or by the way Mal and Wash deal with it. My discomfort is that I can't quite dive into believing the fiction and worrying for the characters. The guiding hand of the writer who contrived this bizarre thing, and the actors who are playing it off, keeps smacking me in the face.

I do think Joss wanted it this way, since he seems to love walking that fine line between serious drama and self-parody. The balance isn't quite as perfect as usual here. Oh well. Overall, I still like it, helluva lot more than I like Heart of Gold!

Niska speaks Czech, though it's hard to hear, And PN... just.... You make Glen Beck look sane. Your work is sculpting reminiscent to that of Michaelangelo had his pet medium not been marble, nor stone but bullshit.

PS, haven't you ever seen Fiddler? just because of all the Soviet Russia jokes have been popular this year, it doesn't mean "In Soviet Russia Jew persecute you" Always entertaining though I must say.

As for the torture scene, the concept of goading Wash so as not to crumble is marvelous especially in the context of the episodes central conflict between Wash and Zoe. I do agree that the execution had its limitations, (the acting I mean not the ACTUAL execution, that was earlier). But there's only so much you can do. Plus remember this was on a network, some torture scene right out of The Wind that Shakes the Barley or Black Hawk Down would not have flown.

REENACT: Yes! I thought it might be, but then I couldn't really think of any crime traditions that came from Czech, so it started to make me doubt. So I offered up Chechen instead.

LOL! No, no paparats for me. I can't stand the press machine! The truth: I was walking to my own ride home, looked up and saw Nathan, so I snapped the picture. That felt enough like stalking to me.

But thanks for the kudos. It is a damned fine picture if I do say so myself!

I love it...I think it portrays some of the best acting in the series, and the interactions between the actors is brilliant. I was on the edge of my seat when I first saw it and I bit my lip so hard due to the intensity of the scene it bled...aagh! now i have to go and watch it to remember why.

I see Twitter as "peeking with permission" rather than cyberstalking...it's all consentual. I am intrigued as to why people I don't know occasionally peek on my twitter and then decide to follow me, my tweets are not that interesting.

The scene used to bother me and I'd have to look away, but now I appreciate it for allowing Wash to grow in character, and reveal what a brave man he really is.
