Can anyone picture Rebecca Gayheart as River?

Not to make this a Rebecca-bashing post, but do you think Firefly would even still be here with a casting decision that wrong? In a show teetering between life and cancellation, one such sour note could've easily done it in.

Thank goodness Joss re-cast the role! Summer Glau is truly making River Tam her own.

I loved that part in "Safe" where she instinctively joins the dancing at the festival. Her 'ramblings' are intriguing and convincing as is her newborn delight with certain things.

I didn't recognize her name, so I went to the good old IMDB... she's been in some stuff with Whedon folk (Julie Benz, SMG...) wonder if that's why she was being considered. I only saw her in Urban Legends, and I guess I heard her in Hercules, but I can't think of who that was she was playing....

Anyway, I couldn't agree more... she seems to fluffy to me to be able to pull off River.

I remember her (RG) best as the Noxzema girl.

Hmmm...actually Rebecca Gayheart was supposed to play the part of Inara. I'm glad Morena Baccarin got the role instead.

It's sort of funny that Rebecca Gayheart the Noxzema Girl was replaced by Morena Baccarin the Secret Deodorant Girl.

A perky Inara? Thank Joss that didn't happen. Anyone remember her in Earth 2? I don't think I've ever seen her in anything where it seemed as though she might have an actual thought in her head.

Yeah, I'm mean.

The first time I saw Rebecca Gayheart was in the show Earth 2 several years ago. I liked that show, I thought it was pretty imaginative and different, as opposed to the horrendous Seaquest DSV - both series debuted on NBC the same year. NBC cancelled Earth 2 after just a few months, but left Seaquest on for like three years, drastically retooling it every season.

Ever since I heard that, I've appreciated Morena SO MUCH more. I think Rebecca would have been a horrible choice for Inara. And nobody really takes her very seriously as an actor, after too many 90210 and Urban Legend type roles, so I don't think it would have helped people take Firefly seriously. Anyone know why she didn't end up taking the role? Maybe Joss came to his senses.

Warrick: You didn't have to wound that man.
Mal: Yeah, I know. It was just funny.

Joss once said he only works with "serious actors". Granted, he said this in reference to the Britney Spears on Buffy rumors.... but I'd say it applies here as well.

I don't think Rebecca Gayheart's "open book" style of acting would be appropriate for Inara who , at least me is a woman of many mysteries. I don't think Gayheart could pull off a truly deep character.

I believe Joss stated that Gayheart wasn't clicking with the cast (I assume in terms of chemistry). I'm glad he didn't stay with her. Morena is far better, and this is the first work I've seen her in.

While I haven't seen evidence of this for myself imdb.com claims that her film Perfume (which featured an appearances by Ms. Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson and Coolio) is supposed to be on videotape. Judging by the imdb ratings this isn't a good film (4.7 ratings from 80 voters) but Morena has third billing so it might be worth something.

Also, imdb.com states that her film Roger Dodger (starring Campbell Scott, Isabella Rosellini, and Elizabeth Berkley) entered limited release on October 25 so it might be coming to your local art house sometime soon (be warned, Morena apparently has only a very small role judging by the cast list on imdb).
