I'm 40 and have been collecting for 33 years. Although what I pick up has diminished greatly over the years (these days, it's mostly things with "created by Joss Whedon" or "created by George Lucas" on the cover), I don't know that I'll ever stop.

Demographically, comics have become an "old man's game," over the past few years... decades? Since the mid-1980s, themes for many comics have become increasingly mature, and storylines have become increasingly complex, intentionally targeting adults (and/or young adults) rather than children.

Starting in the early 1990s, with the introduction of superior inking techniques and the user of higher quality paper, the price of comics has risen dramatically, making it a hobby only for those with truly disposable income. Sure, some kids can afford in on their allowances, but many of them are probably saving up for a new XBox game or another month of WoW instead.

Hit the average comic store on a Saturday and you'll see kids shopping with their parents. But on Wednedsay afternoon/evening (Wednesday = New Comic Day), and you're going to find college students and guys in suits twice their age.

I used to collect comics, and still buy graphic novels every so often if one strikes my fancy. But seriously, all of the interlinking between movies, comic books, regular novels, TV shows, soundtracks, video games, and God knows what else, is getting pretty irritating.

If there's a market for something then it's going to be exploited. And most fans will rejoice even if the stories are complete and utter shit.

Even happened with Firefly going to comics. Those stories should have been on film.

It's really disheartening.

FOLLOWMAL

I'm 53 and although I don't collect comics, my son in law does and I read them all the time. Graphic novels as well. A story is a story, no matter how it's told IMHO.

We started out telling stories around the fire, then we put them down in the written word with pictures, then we acted stories out on stage, then we created radio, film and tv and expanded outward from there. One day we may have implants that connect us instantly to ways to receive entertainment. Who knows!
