I was just wondering why Early was so weird. I don't have to tell you guys that he was a strange guy. Did he have some sort of zen-like equalness with himself, or was he just messed up. Either way, thinking you're a lion is creepy, even if he heard Simon wrong.

Hmmm.....I think maybe some from Column A, and some from Column B.

And thinking you are a lion is probably better self-image than thinking you're a aardvark or some sort of invertabrate, right? :)

Very creepy...
I kinda thought he pretended to mishear Simon on purpose. Always throw off the other person in a conversation... that way you get to keep the upper hand. ;)
I have no idea why he's such a freak. Freaks happen. LOL. But I don't think he has any sort of zen equalness about him... he's just in denile about the fact that he is a sick sick man.
Notice he got very unnerved when she told him about himself?

I believe the reason for Early's misperception, and expression of normally internalised thought and action, is that his mind is being actively probed by River which has these side-effects. The readings of other characters is passive and not noticed by the subject.

Only Purplebelly believes any of this

are aardvarks really so bad. Would a badger or cougar or duck or egret be better?

I think all space bounty hunters need a little unevenness about them. It's a tough job. oh and he likes playing with his marks' heads. Kinda fun. So he called himslef a lion. Lions are scary.

In the commentary, Joss explains what he was trying to accomplish was that Early and River were connected. Perhaps opposite sides of the same coin. Early liked to use mind games on his victims. River had played him like a fiddle, using his own mind games, only revealing herself when all the pieces were in place and the trap was baited. Joss also used this to express the tactile nature of this episode and his own personal beliefs. When Early asks if the room has meaning if no one is inside it. Joss wants to say that simply that an object (or person) exists, it has meaning. In a tactile sense, the more we touch or connect to an object (or person), the greater meaning it has. The odd scene, where Early licks the framework, is simply another way of connecting to his environment.

We got you partially surrounded.

PINGJING

That's so funny that this discussion came up, because I was just thinking about this today. Like Highiron02 said, I think it has to do with Early's connection with other people, or the lack thereof. He's connected with River, in a way, but he can't relate to other, normal people. So when Simon asks him a perfectly logical question, he comes up with the most illogical answer. But to him it makes sense.

That, and he really does throw Simon off. You can just see Simon thinking, what kind of nut job is this guy?

I don't mean to dumb down the dialogue here but does anyone else think the design of Early's ship was a nod to Boba Fett's Slave One?

he was in a suit so maybe his hearing was temparaly screwed up? I know people who think/act like him so I don't think it's all that weird.

Have met such freaky dudes in my life. Honest.

Generally that twisted relation to the universe is a serious survival handicap. You see lots of people on the streets to attest to that. But sometimes such a person has a major singular talent through which they deal with life. It becomes the swiss-army knife of their existance. In Early's case, he was good at tracking people down. The rest of him is just seriously twisty.

sometimes you cling too hard to what you have Early knew how to read people and it got to the point he thought he saw into them.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

HighIron02 hit it right on the head. Early's character and his lines have Joss written all over them. Early & River are supposed to be opposite sides of the same coin.

RANDRAUG

Early freaks me out because he displays classic symptoms of an antisocial personality disorder (I just took a psychology class, see). His chraming personality, his strange association with words and language, the implied killing of his dog. I can't recall exactly all of the symptoms, but it's generally a dysfunctional relationship with the world. They're usually trying to compensate for some flaw in their lives, but a malfunction in the brain causes them to act out in a violent manner.

These are the people who become serial killers, the people you read about who, say, charm women into their homes and then brutally murder them.

That's why he scares me. Look it up, and you'll see how eerie it is.

DOUBLESHINY

I thought he was a brilliant character, really creepy. He was clearly insane which made it easier for him to be totally focused on finding and taking River; he couldn't be dissuaded by money or by reason for not taking her.

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!
