Once upon a time, a couple of years ago, there was a firefly fit club where Browncoats from near and far came to support each other's efforts to get in shape.

Does anyone know if it still exists? And if it doesn't, is anyone interested in starting it back up again?

Long story short, I got pretty fit while living abroad and managed to shed most of my junk food & alcohol weight from college. I did a 1,300 mile bicycle ride for charity. Moved back to America about 5 months ago and BAM! 15 lbs up and loss of muscle definition.

I've decided that now is the time to get proactive about my fitness again and I'm interested in seeing if anyone wants to join me.

I've done 2 5K open water swims this summer. Might do another before the fall.

As for general fitness, I'm a fan of Dr Kenneth Cooper.

There are a million diets and plans out there, but it all comes down the most basic and simple rule.

Burn more calories than you take in , you'll lose weight. You don't have to do anything, but eat smart. No gyms, no meals in a box, no pills, no sleek looking home work out gimmicks... just pay attention to how many calories are in the stuff you're eating, and then choose.

You wanna stay fat and eat that cheeseburger and fries ? Or do you wanna fit into that suit or pair of pants you've been eying....

It's your choice.

Yeah... however you choose to do it, getting fit is a great idea.

This is one of those rare instances where Rap and I are in complete agreement.

I work a very physical job, constantly moving and lifting heavy cartons and cases, loading and unloading, picking and packing... So I had this idea that I was getting "exercise"; I wasn't. Not anywhere close.

Now I'm riding a bike again, and (cross fingers and knock wood) so far my back is holding up amazingly well. Did 6.5 miles this morning. Stretching that out to a 10-mile ride tomorrow morning. It's nothing yet, but it's a start. A month ago a 3-mile ride kicked my ass. This morning I did it twice, because I felt so good after the first lap I wanted to keep going.

So let's get this thing going! Let's get fit!

Right on, Kwicko!! Biking is awesome. I especially love sweating my way up a mountain. Such a feeling accomplishment and it's one that I haven't found yet where I'm currently living.

Today I had a 4 mile walk and it was nice except for nearly getting hit by a car. Also skipped the gratuitous carbs, which is my biggest problem.

So, I guess I'm going to go ahead and establish my goals: I don't necessarily want to lose weight (I'm not overweight), but I do want to develop more lean muscle like I used to have. And I'm going to reduce the amount of processed food that I consume, even though that's going to suck and I'll actually have to learn to cook a bit.

Y'know, Sass, I've cut my processed foods down to nearly nil, and I find that I'm actually cooking LESS. How so? More fresh fruits and veggies! Instead of processed, packaged turkey, dressing, gravy and mashed potatoes, a baked lemon-pepper & garlic chicken breast cut into chunks and served over a garden salad, with fruit salad on the side. Instead of fried catfish with hush puppies, baked catfish on a bed of wild rice and sauteed peppers and onions. We really had to adjust our diet amazingly little to start turning it around. "Taco night" now involves a quarter pound of meat for two people, instead of a half pound, and there are leftovers now. It also involves lots of fresh garlic, jalapeรฑo peppers, cilantro, lettuce, tomatoes, avocados, a peach and a mango, and onions, as well as fresh salsa and pico de gallo... :)

As a bonus, our grocery bills have gone below $100 a week, about $40 of which is food for the dogs and cats, and $30 is for produce, most of which we're getting at the local farmer's markets. I *DO* splurge on stuff like bananas and fresh pineapple, though. :) And lately raspberries and blueberries, when I can find them at a decent price. I had my own blackberries in the spring, from a plant I sprouted out of my compost heap!

I haven't cut OUT anything, but I've cut DOWN on breads, sweets, and meats. I still love bacon, but I don't need four slices; one or two is fine.

And I'm on a mission by year's end to bike from my house to the Hill Country Galleria at Bee Cave (a convenient landmark to mark the distance, not for any particular shopping needs I have!) and back, a round trip of 36 miles.

If I lose weight along the journey to that ride, so much the better. And if I pull off that distance on my little hybrid bike, I get to step up to a nicer road bike. At which point, I'll have to up the distance!

I don't eat meat, so I tend to overload on carbs and cheese and that's my problem. I eat and booze less than I did in college, but I haven't shrunk my portion sizes enough.

I don't know where you are at in your fitness level Kwicko, but I KNOW that you will make that goal by the end of the year. In my experience, if you stick with your training, the fitness curve is steep.

Turkey bacon is a fair enough substitute, for those jonesin' for some bacon.

And at less than 1/2 the calories, you can add in another slice, and feel none of the guilt.

MalsWay and I started bicycling the beginning of April. Every week has been "instant gratification". We have gone from zero to 60+ miles per week.

We do three to four 12-mile laps separately during the week, and those are hill-laden. We do one "long" (30+ miles) and one shorter ride together on the weekends. I think there will be a 40+ mile ride soon. I think the limiting factor will be how much our butts can take!

Our average speed is up 40% from when we started. We're in higher gears now, and much better able to pull hills.

Neither of us has lost an ounce, but we are both far stronger and have far more cardiovascular capacity. And we're eating significantly less. Go figure! (Actually, I have seen this before. Muscle is much more dense than fat.)

I'm a dancer though. I use to dance 6 days a week when I did it competitively! I kept my weight down with no problems back then. Now is a different story...

I don't know how far apart everyone is, but maybe we could at least form a support group? seems theres a few of us who could use it!

Good news! The only proper measure of fitness is how much force you can generate. However you look or feel is irrelevant, as is your ability to generate minimal amounts of force repeatedly.

Lift heavy; eat until you gag, and then guzzle protein shakes. Remember, isolation exercises are for sissies, and don't forget to squat.

Chrisisall, if I had feelings, they would be wounded. Should I develop feelings at a future date, I shall read your wounding post, and be wounded.

If there is to be a Firefly Fit Club, I simply must participate. I know very little about "fitness", but a bit about eating, grunting and wiggling: weight lifting. Should anyone be desperate enough, and foolish enough, I've been battling my natural frailty and high metabolism for over a decade, and have learned af few tricks.

I enjoy kicking sand into people's faces. Not from malice, mind you, but rather the joy of inspiring others to reach their potential. Most of my advice and encouragement would consist of making statements like "stop doing teh yogas and squat moar!!!1" or "stop eating teh veggies and protein moar!!!!1"...and posting pictures of myself, flexing, with my face replaced with that of Cookie Monster.

But seriously, that kung fu stuff might be fun, but do you get any anaerobic exercise? Every man, and woman, ought to squat til they yak at least once. It makes you feel all masculine and alive and stuff.

Most folk I know that are getting into fitness are content to fix their diet, and jog a little, which is all fine and dandy. But they neglect the "Riddle of Steel", which is not. Krom demands that we lift, dude.

Soooo... Ended up doing 6.5 miles on Friday morning, 6.5 on Saturday morning, and only 6.3 on Sunday morning (but it was a more hilly route).

My buddy that I rode with Sunday wasn't up for a third lap of our route (the Veloway at Circle C), but I actually felt like I could have done it without too much pain. As it is, my legs are a *little* stiff today. I'll take the day off, since it's raining. Well, I still have to walk the dogs this evening, so that's a mile of walking to loosen up a bit. :)

All in all, not a bad weekend's work, topped off with a trip to the farmer's market to load up on fresh goodies for the week!

You just might be mistaken...

Quote:

When being pursued by Carol Kane screaming "Humperdinck!", Crystal cries "Shtigin!". Where the script has him telling Valerie to "Shut up!", Crystal says "Sha!" (the Yiddish equivalent.) More significantly, right after Inigo says "Humiliations galore!", Miracle Max mutters something that sounds like "Hahaha! I did a lickvaldanation." This has been reported on the net in several unofficial transcriptions as "I'm gonna lick the dalmatian", but that's not what he's saying. An exhaustive search of the net provides no clues as to these ad-lib insertions. It has also been postulated that Crystal was engaging in playful linguistic infix wordplay and actually was muttering "Hahaha! Hudemickiniliation!". The Princess Bride Special Edition DVD includes a new twist on the question of what Billy Crystal says. The subtitles of the DVD show nothing when he utters the unknown phrase, but the captions shown on any caption-enabled TV show the following, " Hahaha! Hi diddle lick do day dee shie". This may, however, also just be a captioner's attempt at phonetically sounding out this phrase. In the "As You Wish" documentary, Billy Crystal says that he threw in Yiddish and a "little song", and the scene cuts to this phrase, possibly leading one to believe that he was repeating some nonsensical song he knew.

So, if Willis said it, he got it wrong. No surprise there, as every single thing about those stupid movies is wrong.

Oh. MY. God. The. quarterback. IS. toast.

I remember the club as I took part when we did it. Actually wound up losing like 20 lb and feeling pretty good about it.

It's no longer going that I am aware of, but I would certainly participate if we start it back up. I could stand to lose about 25 lb.

So let's crank this thing up and keep it going!

I did a small 4.35 mile ride yesterday, then topped it today with an 8.02 mile ride. I expected to feel pretty whipped after today's ride, because I did one l loop slow and steady, and the second loop mixing in lots of sprints and grinds on the hillclimbs. My knees were a little rubbery afterwards, but recovered pretty quickly.

Now I'm off to the farmer's market to load up on fresh organic fruits and veggies for the week!

Opted for a shorter ride today, but tried to do it faster, more intense. 4.54 miles this morning, followed by oatmeal and a fruit salad.

I do shorter, more intense hill-laden rides to get stronger so that long leisurely rides are more... leisurely.

Oatmeal and fruit salad... hey! I'm hungry!

What I'm trying to do is alternate - longer rides during which I try to NEVER stop pedaling or rest, and then shorter rides focused more on climbs and sprints. Fortunately for me, there's a nice road behind my house that does a 110-foot climb up a hill. I can grind my way up that hill, and then basically cruise home, or do it again.

It's a long journey, but it's getting easier every time.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I walk 2-3 miles at lunch every day at work, and take short walks during my morning and afternoon breaks.

Got to get back to the gym. Figure tomorrow will see my return.

SASSALICIOUS

Good work everyone!

I fell off the bandwagon, so to speak. It's not that I stopped physical activity, but my healthy eating & regular exercise plan was cast aside while I had family visiting for the past week.

Fit in A LOT of beach time, surfing, and 15 hours of Disney while the family was here. Ate way way too much crap. But it was delicious. FML.

So today I slept, worked a few hours, and biked 3 miles. Not much, but at least it's something.

No need for apologies Sassalicious, we all slip from time to time, and it is easy to do with family around visiting. Don't beat yourself up over it. Just consider it a break and it looks like you're already back into the swing of things.

Great bicycling weather this morning for the first time in a long time, but it was a tough ride. However, what used to take me an hour and nine minutes four months ago now takes me fifty four minutes.

P.S.: Can you say, "Square Law"? I knew you could.

Not a great weekend for bicycling for me. I went out to west Texas on Friday to help my niece move into her new house (I was volunteered to drive the big truck, which is always fun). I managed to sneak in a 4.5-mile ride Friday morning before heading out, and then pulled off a 4.25-mile ride Saturday morning (Oh, Jeebus, was I sore!), and then got back to Austin today and threw in a 5.25-mile ride around Town Lake this afternoon (101ยบ and 90% humidity!), just because I was feeling guilty for not having ridden more. My arms and legs are still sore from all the moving and lifting, but it was well worth it, and I got to spend some awesome time with family to top it off!

This week, I have to get onto some tough hillclimbs. Oh, and I've got a line on a home gym that a friend wants to get rid of. She just wants it gone before the baby gets here (she's 6 months preggers), so I should have a nice Weider Crossbow coming my way, for the price of having to haul it out of her house.

for guys in this thread - my bro recommends PS90X whatever that is. It got him ripped though, no steroids. Um...I had a long post for the gals but it got eaten somehow, I'll repost later but short version is - no junk food (other than pretzels or fruit) stop eating out, watch the alcohol and ANY liquid calories - you don't need them - and light exercise - walk an hour, do pushups and squats while watching the teevee - and over time you'll lose weight without realizing it, promise.

Walked the dog this morning for about a mile and a half before work. Just got back from my lunch walk. Having to walk in the underground parking garage since it's too hot outside, but walked for an hour. Hitting the gym tonight.

Started my diet yesterday. Wish me luck!

good luck with the diet! i hate dieting and that's what has me so frustrated. for the 2 years i was living abroad, i didn't really need to think about what i was eating and i stayed the same or lost fat/gained muscle (i suspect my weight ever changed that much).

enough whining from me.

on the weekend i fit in about 10 miles of biking total. yesterday I walked 4 miles and today will definitely have 3 miles of biking today, but perhaps more.
