KIRKULES

I just received the monthly magazine that comes with my NRA membership and was happy to see that the NRA has been infiltrated by Browncoats.

From "America's 1st Freedom" pg. 38

"Hidden beneath the bronzed exterior of Captain Malcolm Reynolds' Frontier Model B resides a secret--a Taurus five shot .38 revolver. A constant companion to Browncoat Reynolds in the 2005 movie "Serenity"--in which Reynolds uttered the line"I aim to misbehave," now legendary among the movie's cult following--this blank firing prop handgun was designed by Allied Effects in Los Angeles. To support the captain of a near-derelict transport ship taking cargo and individuals from one planet to the next, the pistol had to have a unique appearance to match the rugged frontier of the future.
While a solid pistol casting was used earlier in 2002 for the short-lived TV show "Firefly," the big screen needed to have blank firing capabilities for close-up shots, so the compact Taurus revolver was incorporated. The hidden revolver's cylinder could be accessed through a removable cover plate; but for on-screen reloading purposes, a detachable magazine was part of the futuristic design.
Looking for a great place to visit with no admission charge? Come by the National Firearms Museum at NRA Headquarters in Fairfax, VA. Thousands of historic arms covering more than six centuries of technology are represented in the galleries, and our modern museum store offers a wide range of books, clothing items and souvenirs. This summer don't miss "Hollywood Guns" our special temporary exhibit featuring the actual guns used in many classic films.

For more information, e-mail nfmstaff@nrahq.org or call(703) 267-1600.
Visit the online gallery at www.nramuseum.org."

Coolness. We have a replica flintlock pistol in our collection which I used to think was special until I got the Firefly and Serenity companion books and got a closer look at the artistry of those weapons.

It's great to see the mention of Mal's pistol in the NRA magazine.
Too bad they got THIS wrong:

The Mal pistol always incorporated the Taurus revolver under the shells.

The movie version of the Mal pistol is the TV version reworked to look more "sci-fi" on the big screen.
So, in essence, the TV version of the Mal pistol no longer exists.

I remember reading somewhere, the original Mal pistol was missing when Serenity got the green light.
The pistol that ended up being Wash's
(the "three barrel" Mateba revolver)
was being built for Mal until they reacquired the Firefly Mal gun and modified it.

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Shiny!

Nice exposure to a group we might not otherwise reach.

Thanks for sharing the pic and article.

Hi Doug, and thanks for the article.

Sorry if I come off as contrary, but the pistol was featured on both the Applied Effects website and in the Firefly Visual Companion Volume One (page 78) in its Firefly form with the removable shrouds and the Taurus 85 inside.
A number of us in the hobby even had the chance to purchase some of the, still rough, castings made from the rapid prototype masters.
Out of my budget range, but one more first hand evidence that the Mal pistol was always made to accept the revolver inside.
EDIT:
Checked with robstyle on the RPF and he says there were rubber stunt versions cast of the Mal pistol.

It's a minor point and I'm sure most Browncoats are still happy for the prestigious recognition of our little corner of film fandom.

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks for posting Kirk. Hell, I'd join just to get a glimpse of the Captain's sidearm.

A shiny post of the first order. I wonder if Nathan ever got to keep it. I figure because he used it in the Castle Halloween episode.

Thanks dude!

Nathan did not get to keep the original Mal pistol; not after Firefly and not after the BDM Serenity.
The pistol you see in the Castle Halloween episode is a Model 47.
The Model 47 and Model 47a were made by Firefly prop collector Karl Derrick,
who supplied the bulk of the props seen in the Firefly Companions Vol. one and two and Still Flying.
He has a website
http://www.fireflyarchive.com/
that features absolutely the finest collection of original Firefly props in the world.

Actually, I suspect quite a few Browncoats were NRA members to begin with....

I was an NRA member long before I was a Browncoat, but they do seem to go together well. I hope this article will help our numbers grow, both Browncoat and NRA.
