I was on the way home today and was trying to come up with what the premise of a sequel could be.

The first idea that popped in my head was "The Revenge of Atherton Wing"

I mean, the guy has means and motive and drive, and since he probably would have to kill Mal to try to regain his honor, I could see him taking this to epic heights. I'm sure he could find some Alliance people who would be more than happy to assist... So,he kidnaps Inara to bait Mal. I mean, it's not exactly taking on a corrupt system, but it's got teeth- and it could be done from the perspective of a few years down the road, which is where we are. I 've only read 2 fanfics so I appologize if it's been said.

So what other ideas have we?

I'd be far, far more interested in "The Revenge of Jubal Early", "The Vengance of Niska" or "The Undressing of YoSaffBridge".

There's plenty o' room for all that in Serenity 3, hon.

And if not maybe Ath can team up with 'em...

Atherton wasn't a very interesting character IMO. Saffron all the way. Especially with how high Christina Hendrick's stock is soaring these days.

It would have a whole doublecross, triplecross, etc. thing going. Maybe like a Ocean's Eleven set in space. Except with 7...and Mal's instead of Ocean's.

Exactly. Lots of potential there.

Atherton is just a rich douche. Not as interesting. Though I love me some Shindig, he's the weakest element.

Ha, If Atherton had a D-cup I'm sure he would've grown on ya'll...

I don't think a Jubal movie would make it, we've already had a scary black man movie, and I don't think we wanna turn FF into the living embodiement of "black vs. white".

Wait- didn't we have an eppisode like that... Oh yeah- I think it was called "Trash"!

Also, Saff would be in jail on Bellarophon, and even if she could talk her way out of max security-not that I'm saying she couldn't- I gotta think she'd think twice about messin' with Mal and Crew. She's devious allright, but most gals aren't extremely proficient in the revenge business...

I'm more than willing to change my mind if someone would give logical reason as to why I should. I am also not opposed to a Niska revisit but I am exploring the less reviewed options here, ones that don't involve boobage as an inspiration...

What was wrong with Trash? It was a good episode and a movie in the same vein would be fine with me. If you've seen Buffy think about how many times they had Ethan Rein show up to cast a spell or create some kind of crazy havok. Just because the character is a one trick pony doesn't mean they aren't fun.

I'm pretty sure Saffron could talk or deal her way out of jail. Heck I don't know why she wouldn't hand the crew over on a silver platter for a half hour off her sentence.

Also she seemed to go pretty revengy on Mal in Trash.

Basically I guess I disagree with all your points in that post.

The thing about Saffron, though, is that she always loses out when it comes to the crew.

Do you really want her to get away with something against them in movie form? Maybe if there'd been more eppisodes, sure.

All I'm saying is I think Ath could grow to BECOME an epic ass, and it's apparent he's already hated, so making him into the guy you love to hate should'nt be too hard...

I'm not sure I understand the question - she loses out, but would get away with it, huh?

Anyway, I've little doubt that Joss could come up with a fun story that involved her if he so chose.

And I don't know that Ath is so much hated, as he gets a big ol' "Meh". Just not interesting.

That could maybe have some potential. Except he didn't really strike me as much if a revenge guy. Now, I could see him hiring Saff and our crew for another job....

Eh, that's only one way to go with a story, and wouldn't really work unless it was Saffron: The Movie.

A more workable format would be her stealing something in the first act, which the crew gets back by the end, or somesuch. A whole movie of her just screwing the crew would be dull, and not likely something Joss would ever write.

I'm thinking a revenge of blue sun or the academy or something. We only know that the operative killed Dr. Mathias and a couple of blue hands, but there could be many more and River's message to Simon was they are hurting 'us' not just 'me.'

Personally, I think that is the best direction we could go in. We really don't know that much about Blue Sun. Maybe Blue Sun even wants revenge on the Alliance it self for what the Operative did? So many possibilities.

Sheesh, I think you might be projecting a bit. I discussed the possible merits and possible shortcomings - and you seem to be taking it personally. Don't get upset because the story you throw out there, after snarkily complaining about any other idea, has easy to spot problems.

I was thinking the same. I dunno if it's firefly cannon, but the serenity rpg book says Serenity is actually a decommissioned medship conversion firefly. Maybe they're new mission of sorts could be to rescue the other academy students and for Simon to help them get better. All the while Blue Sun is playing playing public would-be revolutionaries against the Alliance's suddenly shaky grip on power while trying to track down Serenity's crew and reclaim River, their greatest success, maybe with a student mole!

Maybe I should write something like that after I finish 'Secret Agent Tam.' Only I don't know I could do the concept justice. I enjoy the funny stuff way too much.

Weren't nothin' wrong with "Trash" my only problem is -it's been done. Why rehash if we ain't gotta? I'm sure there's enough of the 'verse we haven't seen.

Hand over who? I'm pretty sure most of the 'verse knows where ta find 'em after Serenity...My problem is I don't see the Crew getting away with any heist, after.

Gettin in a fight and making Mal get nekkid were moments of opportunity, hell, it took her seven years to come up with stealing the lassiter (or she woulda taken it with her when she left) and she wasn't even looking for or planning revenge when she ran into him. Why would you think that? It's not like they were in the broadcast, or signed their names to it. Sure, the Alliance knows they did it, but they've always been after the crew, so no huge change in status quo there.

Not saying their lives wouldn't change at all afterward, but I can't imagine they'd suddenly become known across the 'verse.

Hence my use of the word "character." Would you like the definition of that word, in the context I was using it?

char·ac·ter
-noun
a person represented in a drama, story, etc.
a part or role, as in a play or film.

You do realize that favorite lines and characters are often quoted by fans, right? Obsession with a show will often manifest in this way.

Personally, I see both Atherton and YoSaffBridge as interesting complications, but not enough to be a real plot device. The only reason I hold Niska above those two is because he has a powerful organization under his control, but even Niska I see more as a complication than a focus.

How about something focused on the Guild? That's another thing we haven't really heard much about. Maybe the guild has some nefarious plan to rule the galaxy through it's concubines! Maybe that's why they said many planets woudn't even let them land without a registered companion on board.

That's why the operative let them go, 'cause now everybody knows, and if they get killed it'll just damage the Aliance's rep that much more...Don't think they would've let them go if they could have covered up who sent the signal, unfortunately there was 90 dozen ships and 90 dozen officers who saw Serenity aimed right at 'em with a screen blaring "lookout for this Captain" Oh, and what a coincidence there just happened to be this signal explaining Miranda 10 minutes later... Hello - some nice ideas out there. I particularly like the Blue Sun angle. Would be fun also if during the darker more severe moments Jayne continues to wear his Blue Sun T-shirt.

For me personally I was always fascinated with Book and his back-story. I would be very interested in a story that involved his past catching up with and affecting the crew. Obviosuly in a negative way that would incur a rift within the group - in particular Zoe and Mal going their seperate ways.
Just what Books past may be is tricky, as any notion that one comes up with seems strangely inadequate for Book, but lets say for arguments sake that, his association with the Crew (while he was alive) has resulted in a 'Hit' being put out on them, and just about every low down bounty hunter and 'would be hero' out there is trying to destroy them.

....and if that isn't enough a wave comes in from a young woman on one of the 'fancier alliance friendly planets' claiming to be Book's daughter asking for help from Mal and co.

This is why I don't usually talk to women, because they use emotional warfare, and guys will tell you plain what they don't like about you. Someone snarks at me, you'll see me start a war. BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Agreed. Atherton, while easy to dislike, was not at all interesting to me. I don't think he has what it takes to be the villian in a sequel. Niska on the other hand most assuredly does.

Christina's stock is soaring, but would she be willing to gamble that on Serenity 2? I would like to think she would and she would certainly be a draw, but then again so would Nathan thanks to his Castle following.

Why not have both Niska and Saffron? They could be working together or better yet, Saffron may have double crossed Niska and is on the run, using the crew to get away. Even better, Niska uses Saff to bait a trap to lead Mal in to another trap so he can exact his revenge left unfinished in Was Stories.

The word of mouth alone would cover a dozen worlds in a dozen days. People are still passing along the tiniest trivia from our civil war, and that was without a Cortex.

Yeah, Mal's gettin' away with anything days would be long done.

The operative let them go because he saw that the alliance was flawed and might not create the perfect worlds he was hoping for. He started to think in shades of gray. The alliance let them go because they aren't inherently evil. They aren't going to just lock up or execute people for no good reason. Their respected officer recommended letting Serenity and crew go. While they may have some inkling that his loyalty is waning, this is the first thing to tip them off. They likely went along with it only to find out that he's changed.

As for the other troops there's such a thing as top secret. I'm sure the alliance will be discrediting the broadcast right away. They will cover it up and the people who don't even believe in reavers will assume it's a hoax. The people who do believe it will be in the minority on the rim planets. Nothing much will come of it except a few more people on the rim hating on the alliance.

About the Blue Sun idea, I like it. However, I don't want to see it in Serenity 2 if it's going to be mostly focused on River. She had enough focus in Serenity. Time to move on to a story that the rest of the crew can have a bigger impact on. Maybe save Blue Sun for Serenity 3 (while we're dreaming)

Hmm, well, if that's your take, cool. Little too broad for me, lots of holes in the logic. But to each their own.

THEHAPPYTRADER

Good point, I would love to see some of the other characters get more of a focus in another Serenity movie. Maybe something the focuses on Inara or Zoe. They are both interesting characters that are bound to have interesting pasts. I'd love to see Simon take the lead, but it's hard to think of a plot where Simon isn't mostly an accessory to River or Kaylee or some other character. He's an interesting character, but he doesn't really doesn't seem to have his own goals, outside of helping River. But maybe a new movie could give him some.

Maybe a little something that shows whatever Simon and Inara's past connection was, or a race to find a cure for Inara's terminal illness.

Or maybe the Alliance (under new leadership) contracts Mal and his crew to look for a 'cure' of some sort for the reavers under the radar, on account of them not willing to openly admit the problem and their resources stretched thin maintaining order. That could make for interesting conflict, Mal not trusting or wanting anything to do with the Alliance, even under new leadership, and Simon wanting to help people cause that's what he does. Then, as an interesting twist, the Alliance or some rogue faction of it, deploys the PAX as some sort of chemical warfare and Serenity, armed with a cure or countermeasure or something swoops in to save this helpless Rim planet about to be made an example of.

A potential Simon story could also involve his deal to bust River out. We assume he just used money in the deal, but that could always be changed. Maybe he promised more. The group who busted River out might come around to call in their favor and force Simon into a bad situation.

Simon seems like the type to deal with the consequences of his actions. I'd expect him to go through with a favor like that. Of course the rest of the crew would be trying to save him and get him back.

Just another thought for a Simon story that's more about him than River. Which I think is a good idea.
