60APES

Hello!

I just got back from the San Diego Comic-con! I had never been before but when I found out that *some* of the cast of Serenity was going to be there I just had to go. During the week previous I had mentioned to my wife that I wanted something really special for whoever from Firefly showed up. She then secretly hired an artist to make this : http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=1610
I was completely blown away by her gift and prepared to go to Comic-con.
Cut to Sunday at 11:30 AM.
I find the line for autographs has already formed so I decide I would have to miss the Q&A session so this precious gift would not go to waste. A little after 2pm our BDH show up at the signing table. We are told shortly after that they would not be autographing anything besides the mini posters that were on hand. I was unfazed by this news as I felt that once the cast saw what I had brought, they would have no problem bending the rules. While we were waiting in line someone started to give a sketchbook to Nathan and one of the security guards yelled at him! At this point I start to get nervous. (btw I just have to say that the female members of the cast look even better in person!) Finally, it's my turn. Heart in my throat I approach Adam. Trying to get my words out I quickly explain the situation and to plead for him to make an exception and autograph my sign. He smiles a little and grabs it from me and starts to sign the front! I quickly ask him if you could instead sign the back and he does. At this point I can just feel the eyes of the security guard on me. I know that I need to make this quick or who knows what might happen. I move on to Nathan and once again quickly explain the situation. He is move than happy to sign it. During the time I'm having it signed I'm trying to convey how wonderful a job each actor and actress does on the show. I'm so giddy and nervous I'm sure I wasn't very intelligible. Gina starts to sign the back she asks me how I'm going to mount it. This produces quite a few chuckles and I quickly explain that it will hang from hooks so people can see both sides. Alan then Joss sign it and that's it. I just kind of stand there in a daze until one of the security guards reminds me to move along. I pose for a couple of pictures with the sign and then head off for the 10 hour drive home. I still can't believe how gracious the cast and Joss were. They seemed truely pleased to be there and wore smiles the whole way through. I know they sometimes read these pages and I just wanted them to know how much their gesture meant to me.

Oh yeah, here is the back of the Serenity sign signed http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=1611

Doesn't that suck when, as a fan of something you truly love (and after driving 10 hours!), you have to get stressed because of security people that don't realize what something like that can mean to a fan? I know there are rules, etc. etc., but when somebody goes above and beyond to create something that original, (or even fan drawings, like the sketchbook mentioned) the rules should be bent. I guess they don't want stuff showing up on eBay? I'm glad you got the autographs!

The X-Files conventions were never as strict, thankfully. I once had Nicholas Lea (Krycek) sign a fanfic I had written.

Perhaps in the future the organizers of these cons will realize that, especially in the case of Firefly (since the fans are rabid), we should be allowed to get anything we want autographed. The "only one item" should apply, but why should they care if it's an "official" poster or a beautiful wood carving?

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Great story 60APES. Very shiny sign. Ain't they just all Big Damn Heroes? It is great to be the fan of a show w/ such wonderful people in the cast.
