Okay. . .We need to keep this post on the front page for a few weeks. . .all interested parties, please continue to *bump* for a while to make sure it gets well-seen!!

**deep breath**

Remember me discussing having the BDM premiere at that old, classic, beautiful, 'movie palace' theatre I mentioned?

I spoke to the owner today and he LOVES the idea!

Here's the snags, the options, and what we need to do.

Snag #1: His theatre does mostly independant stuff. Very rarely mainstream stuff, so his distributor might not have "Serenity" available for "The Rialto Theatre" in Raleigh NC.

Shiny Option for Snag #1: He owns several theatres, none of them big multiplex affairs, and one of which DOES show mainstream stuff, and he's giving us a CHOICE.

Here's what we need to do!

Step #1: Go online. Go to http://www.therialto.com and take a look. If you like it, email me and let me know.

Step #2: Contact Universal Pictures! Email, call or write ANYONE in distribution and let them know that you REALLY want to see this picture at THE RIALTO THEATRE in RALEIGH, NC!!!! The Theatre is owned by Ambassador Entertainment!!!

The Rialto is "the little guy" and Universal MUST appeal at all times to the almighty dollar. If we convince them that they'll make money showing it at a small theatre, they MIGHT be willing to run it there.

WORST CASE SCENARIO: If we DON'T get to see it at The Rialto, the owner said he'd be interested in running it at one of his other theatres that's still small, but shows mainstream films. I think it's a 4-6 screen theatre. He'd still be interested in granting us time and space for costume contests, general elbow-rubbing shindigging and the like.

Now. . .if you've read this far, please keep reading.

I realize that alot of you might think, "Well.. .we're talking about North Carolina. There's no way I could go there, I'm all the way out here in (insert other state here)!" All NON-Carolina area Browncoats. . .PLEASE support this? Would you please call/write/email 'Versal pictures and help us make this happen for us? Please?

Thanks folks! One more small victory for the Browncoats!!!!

Hi there--

This looks really cool! I'd love to try and make it on down--in fact, the director and editor of MY film (The NUKE Brothers) live in North Carolina.

I wonder if you would consider having the NUKE Bros (44 minutes) shown as a pre-Serenity teaser? Might be cool, and I could probably get a few of our fans in there as well--make a few Firefly converts while we're at it...?

Thought it might be worth mentioning--for more info on me and the NUKE Bros movie, you can check out this thread:

So on a Friday night, in a little theater, there'll be lots of fantastic people in costume and makeup singing along to a movie? Are we watching Rocky Horror too?

It will be a Friday night and a lot of folks could be converted. Under the Kaylee costume have on a Columbia costume. It could be fun. I bet Simon clothes will easily convert to Brad clothes. Inara to Magenta. Weeee. Mapquest here I come.

Shiny news Static, snags or no snags. I was wondering where you stood on the Raleigh, NC BDM shindig.

I for one will be there, as will my wife. I will check the Rialto site and drop you an email.

This sounds like it will be one heck of a Shindig.

As I excitedly tell the SO about the Rialto and the shiny premier, the only thing he can say is, "What is the sound system like?"

The deal will be hard to sell if he doesn't like the sound and projection. What can you tell me? He is very picky about opening day showings. We can only go opening day if the movie is being shown in a sufficiently techified establishment. he hates to travel, so I'll need help with this sell.

The Rialto may be a classic one-screen "movie palace".. .but it has state of the art, Dolby Surround sound. . .complete with handheld microphones so's yours truly or others can do a decent job of hosting the show. Trust me. . .the sound is solid.

In the name of all that is shiny! Static, for the mere suggestion of this you have acheived total hero status in this household.

Having Serenity premiere within driving distance of me would more than make up for the fact that I missed the SDCC due to food poisoning. (Stupid Southern California restaurants what with their bad meat. I shoulda flown to Mysterium in Toronto rather than just driving to San Diego from my friend's house.)

I will certainly attempt to do my part. Have you posted this notice elsewhere?

I am not so poor that I cant afford to get to NC from Idaho. We have a theater here much like you describe yours. State of the Art sound, beautiful palacial type setting... what better place than that to see such a great flick?

Count me in. Oh, I might just have a few Idaho Fans close on my heels when I show up...

Oh yeah. . .I forgot to mention. ..

The Rialto Theatre IS the home for one of the top-ranked Rocky Horror Picture Show productions in the country. It's one of the only RHPS shows that still allows FULL audience participation props (lighters, rice, water pistols, cards, toast, Toilet Paper, Newspapers, etc. etc.) and to the best of my knowledge, it's the ONLY show that still features an "underwear run".

That's how I have the relationship with the theatre that I do. Years ago I was the stage manager/host/Master of Ceremonies/H.M.F.I.C for the show. It runs every Friday night at Midnight.

Perhaps after we own the place for our BDM premiere, we should all stick around and watch folks run around in their underwear?

Static,
How exactly does the process work? You mentioned that your friend has a distributor. I'm trying to figure out all the middlemen (since the world is full of them ). I'm following this thread with interest because I think it's a great test case. It could serve as a template for other people around the country/world who are interested in organizing something similar. But I'm a little hazy on all the different people you would have to make a sales pitch to. Here's my haphazard attempt at a flow chart:

Universal Pictures -> Universal Pictures Distribution (Nikki Rocco, president) -> East coast distribution (Nick Carpou) -> ??? -> Theater Distributor (?) -> Theater Owner (Static's friend)

You've already got the Theater Owner nailed down. Nikki Rocco is probably too high up. Nick Carpou appears to be the right person on the Universal side unless there are people working under him in charge of sub-regions. But does your friend's distributor need to be in the loop and on board?

I'm just thinking out loud that sending e-mails through the Universal web site might not get results (although definitely worth a shot) but that calling up Universal and asking for the right person by name might be a better option.

Here's where I'm getting my Universal information from. This was current as of September of last year. [editted to add: from the way the article is worded it appears Nick Carpou is in charge of eastern US and Mark Gaines is in charge of western US but from the rest of the article it looks like Nick worked his way up on the west coast and Mark worked his way up on the east coast so I'm not entirely sure which one would be more appropriate to contact].
Quote:

Universal Pictures executive vps and general sales managers Nick Carpou and Mark Gaines have seen a great deal of change during their years in the industry. Gaines remembers selling films in gas stations and at exhibitors' homes over dinner, back when there were "mom-and-pop theaters in every town. I did business at a county fair once," he says, "where the theater owner was selling his bull."

Today, the pair of esteemed industry veterans operates in a much different world but with equal aplomb. Reporting to Universal Pictures Distribution president Nikki Rocco, they are responsible for overseeing all sales territories in the Eastern and Western half of the United States, respectively, with Carpou also handling Canada.

Greetings from Chapel Hill!

I'm a fan of the Rialto and think it's one helluva theatre...but I'm having difficulty seeing Serenity playing there, as they're definately more of an arthouse theatre. Now, if the owner can get the distributor to send him a print, I'm all for it. However - and I realize this is rather less exciting than the Rialto - the owner already has a terrific theatre for more mainstream releases: The Lumina, a recently built, nicely maintained, four screen theatre. And I'm not just recommending it because it's right outside of Chapel Hill.

So, if Serenity can play at the Rialto, that's fantastic - but if not, the Lumina is a dandy place to go watch a movie, and is my theatre of choice for any mainstream films that come to the area.

Now, with all due respect to the Rialto, if you really want to show Serenity in a movie palace, you want to show it in Fletcher Hall at the Carolina Theatre. Take a gander:

http://www.carolinatheatre.org/venues/fletcherhall.html

In addition to having truly swank facilities, the Carolina Theatre has annual film festivals for horror films (Nevermore) and action/SF/whatnot (Escapism), as well as regular revival showings of genre flicks through their Retrofantasma Film Series. While Serenity is a touch outside their area (again, independent films and arthouse fare), they just might be interested in hosting a showing. After all, they managed to fill all 1000 seats in Fletcher Hall for a showing of Bubba Ho-Tep during the last Nevermore festival (including a transcendent moment where hundreds of people all shouted "THIS IS MY BOOM STICK!" simultaneously during a trailer for Army of Darkness), so I imagine they'd be receptive to the idea of showing a science-fiction film with a hardcore fanbase. Matt Pennachi organizes the Retrofantasma events, so drop him a line and see what he thinks of a Serenity screening; his contact information is available at the Carolina Theatre website:

The reason I'm pursuing The Rialto (and as an alternate, Mission Valley) is because I'm friends with the owner of Ambassador Entertainment (who also owns the Lumina, I realize), and he's assured me that we would be able to make this an event, including costume contests and other such things. That's really my motivation for suggesting The Rialto.

Bill has also suggested the Lumina as a possible Venue, and there's not a bad chance it will run there in Chapel Hill anyhoo.

Just a reminder to all. . .I'm not looking for the Rialto to be the EXCLUSIVE venue for Raleigh, just to be INCLUDED, so's we have a 'friendly' place to host a major pre-movie shindig.

Do me a favor, if you would. . .in case 'Versal doesn't approve The Rialto as a Venue. . .could you track some info on what hotels and resturants are close to the Lumina, in the event of us moving the Official Raleigh-Durham area Big Damn Premiere Party there instead?

Now, who knows the owner of a movie theater on the weastern US?

Ok, I have other thoughts...

Firstly, Accomadations. What are some nice-ish (but more importantly, cheep-ish) hotels to stay at in the general area? If we could get everybody to stay at one (or two) then that would just add to the fun. I heard mention of a van or seven to be rented...so that we could all carpool.

Secondy, If i happen to go (Im gonna start saving!) I'm gonna hafta fly in, so whats the most local airport?

Okay. . .there are SEVERAL nice AND cheap-ish hotels in the general area. . .and I believe group rates would be available with the proper planning. . .also I get a Military rate that isn't too bad. (point of note: I am one of those neat 'club member' types with La Quinta, of which there is one nearby)

Also. . .the best airport for those of you to fly in to is Raleigh Durham. . .RDU.

Oh, sure. However, if for some reason things aren't working out with his theatres, there's an excellent, fan-friendly alternative in the Triangle.

On the one hand, the Lumina is a much nicer theatre than Mission Valley. On the other hand, Mission Valley serves beer.

Do me a favor, if you would. . .in case 'Versal doesn't approve The Rialto as a Venue. . .could you track some info on what hotels and resturants are close to the Lumina, in the event of us moving the Official Raleigh-Durham area Big Damn Premiere Party there instead?

The Lumina is just outside Chapel Hill, where there's plenty of lodging along 15-501 minutes away from the theatre. Likewise, there's an abundance of restaurants available.

KNIBBLET

Coming back from a night of dancing and debauchery with MoonMagick (*warning ... tangent ahead* What is it with kids nowawdays that they don't dance? They just stand on the dance floor looking at us old chicks like we're frelling nutters? *back to the our regularly scheduled debauchery*)

Anyway, I told her about this event and about the Browncoat Ball in Chicago this September. We regret that neither of us will be able to make the premier Shindig, but we're going to attempt to haul her daughters (both fervent Browncoats) to the ball.

If you see a gorgeous 12 year old dressed as Kaylee, that would be daughter number 2. I'm going to starve myself so that I can fit into my best Companiony outfit.

This sounds really cool...and it's good planning has started now, Static, since this is bound to turn into a huge shindig.

I'm interested (and I'd have to fly in, too) and as more info develops I'll keep an eye out.

Wish it were closer, but the theatre looks cool. Also, it sucks always going to culty-sci-fi-ish films always by myself! I wanna go with a huge group!

Another thought: I'm guessing this shindig would become a whole weekend event? With this many people interested it will have to be all weekend long!

THATWEIRDGIRL

I'm just imagining the press this would stir up. A non-starwars movie party. A group of rabid fans organizes their own premier. Fans from all over descend on NC. it could be really cool.

Somewhere in my weird little brain, I keep hoping that we could arrange some kind of early showing just for us browncoats. Then we would be sent home to spread the word for opening day.

Alrighty then,
Whereever you have it I'm game. I didn't realize so many of the browncoats here are in NC. I'm in Charlotte and could drive a couple of people up. If you need a ride once details are confirmed. Only concern so far is it looks like we'll fill this place up in a NY minute. Is there only one screen? Multiple screens? If you get a place with multiple screens can you get multiple copies of the film and show it simutaeously?

I posted a refly on the 'Versal board, but thought I would just come on over here and post too. I live in SW VA and would really love to make it to a Browncoat function for the premier, so I'm down with whatever y'all come up with. I think it's about a 3 1/2 to 4 hour drive for me.

I've been sane a while now, and change is good. -Wash

Static,

Not sure how far you've gotten in locating a Universal contact. I made some calls to Universal Pictures and have located the sales manager for your region (name, phone number, extension). Send me an e-mail and I'll forward that information to you. nostrakenus at yahoo com
