If there were a Christmas gift exchange amongst the crew of Serenity, what would each character give the other? Example: what would Jayne give Inara? What would River give Jayne? What would Kaylee give Simon? Well, I think we all can guess the answer to that one! hahaha

EDIT: OK. So don't call it Christmas. Totally remove all references to religion. Call it End of the Year Gift Giving Occasion. Geesh!

EDIT per GREENKA61: Or, if you prefer, what would each of our crew *want* for Christmas?

EDIT per INVADERPET87: Or, what would *you* give various members of the Serenity crew for Xmas?

America loves a winner!

Hope you're not asking each crew member to give everyone else a gift.

Perhaps a space version of 'secret santa' ?

I'm not sure who would be involved.

Mal? I don't really see him celebrating the birth of Christ in whatever state of religiosity he was or wasn't in. Was that worded diplomatically enough for the picky S.O.B.s?

I could see Inara celebrating Christmas for a client, but I'd like to know what peticular branch of Christianity the Companion's Guild would subscribe to????

For that matter, Joss didn't really cover who was in what religion much, except for Book. Ron Glass, by the way- isn't Christian, I believe I read he's Buddist??

For all we know, maybe by then some of the holidays have blended a little, like the language and the dress. By then maybe they trot out rice porridge (aka the chinese Laba Festival) and light a tree shaped candle and have paper airplane races in honor of the first ships that left earth-that-was. Maybe they do nothing. It's slightly naive to think that Christmas would stay the same 400 years from now. Traditions almost NEVER stay the same from century to century...

I don't know. They might have some of the same traditions, like gift giving, or carols, but have lost some of the meaning that we give the holiday. Mal does mention Christmas in OMR (I think it was), so the holiday/customs aren't unknown. I would imagine that some of the traditions stayed the same.

My parents aren't religious, indeed my dad has atheist tendencies, but we still celebrate Christmas.

I like your paper airplane races idea to celebrate the Earth-that-was exodus.

Why? and thank you, in that order.

Maybe the question should be, what would each character want for Christmas (if they celebrate it - which I'm pretty sure Kaylee and Book wouldn't let slip by.)

Jayne? He would want so nice new grenades or other ammo. He would be so easy to shop for.

Kaylee would like strawberries, or at least some of the extra engine parts that she knows they are going to need.

Zoe and Wash would like a night alone somewhere off the ship.

Simon would probably love for River to say something where he didn't have to play "20 questions" with her afterward in order to figure out what she meant. Or possibly one of those airline barf bags so she wouldn't throw up on his bed again.

Mal, like Capt. Kirk, would like just one gorram job/mission to go down with absolutely nothing going wrong. Do the job and get paid without anyone on the crew getting shot, tortured or robbed. Bob's yer uncle.

Why do we celebrate Christmas or why do I like your idea?

We celebrate Christmas because its tradition. There are a lot of family memories tied up in the holiday that go back generations. Also, even though dad has atheist tendencies, the message of Christmas is universal. Even atheists hope for things like peace on earth and goodwill toward man. Also, he is an orchestral musicican and there is a great tradition of church music that comes with the holiday. Up until a few years ago he sang every Sunday in a church choir. I guess God (or not)does indeed move in mysterious ways.

I like the paper airplane idea just because. It's simple. It's fun, and they can't exactly set fireworks off on the ship.

If I were on the crew of Serenity, I'd give River a foot massage.

Well, Mal was clearly some sort of Christian before they lost the Battle of Serenity Valley. Book, obviously, as you mentioned. But before the meal, in the Serenity episode, when Book prayed, Kaylee and Jayne, at least, bowed their heads as though they also prayed, presumably to the same god Book was.

I agree with you here but, as long as there are Christians there will be some sort of Christmas celebration. And gift giving at Xmas has been around at least since the middle ages. It was, after all, an aspect of the first Xmas. Of course, I imagine the Verse is peppered with all manner of religions old and new, each with it's own celebrations.

Hell, I've known Jewish families that celebrate Xmas! They just strip the overtly religious aspects out of it. Thanks to the early church's "if you can't beat 'em co-opt 'em" policy, most of what and when we celebrate at Xmas was adopted from pagan winter solstice celebrations.

For that matter much of the Jesus myth was borrowed from paganism.

Handy myths tend to get borrowed and hang around for thousands of years.

That's a good question too. I just thought the question I raised would get at how the crew felt about each other. And I thought it would render some humorous answers. Perhaps I was wrong in that assumption.

GREENKA61 raised the question: What would the crew WANT for Xmas. Here are some thoughts:

Jayne is easy. He would want gift certificates for the nearest whorehouse.

Book wants a new Bible since River ripped his to shreds.

Mal and Inara want each other but they are too stubborn to admit it. So, they each get a lump of coal.

Zoe wants Wash to develop some self-esteem so he stops bugging her about Mal...and for Joss to remake Serenity using the *other* script.

Wash wants a chance to lay around a resort and watch his wife bathe. Of course he won't get the opportunity now, thanks to Joss.

Simon wants to somehow return to his old life.

River...who knows what she wants? She's nuts. Maybe a case of Fruity Oaty bars?

Kaylee: I think we all know what Kaylee wants in her stocking. haha Am I wrong?

Someone needs to get Mal a shiny hat - and my bet on who would dare... Wash, and Zoe would laugh.

Zoe: "It's quite.. fetching, sir... really..."*busts out laughing*

I can so see that.

How funny it is depends on what kind of hat they give him.

Like if they gave him a sombrero, or a fedora, that'd be hilarious!

A beany hat would be cruel.

haha Yeah! The kind mentioned in the pilot! I'd like to have seen him wearing it at the end of "Trash" where he's standing there naked! I think the shiny hat would have been a nice touch. haha Anything so I didn't have to look at his butt! Geesh!

I guess I was thinking it would literally be shiny, like a metallic crown that the the "king of all Londinum" might wear. In design, I was thinking the sort of conical stacked hats Devo used to wear! hahaha
