Wow. That just brought to mind:"Tell me of your home world, Usul." haha

Anyway, I know Mal is from Shadow, Inara is from Sihnon and the Tams are from Osiris. Does anyone have any information where the others were born and/or raised?

I know Wash's home world was smoggy and Mal calls Kaylee a "Prairie Harpy" but that doesn't really help.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

One of the Visual Companions implies that Zoe was also from Shadow. The (non-canon) RPG book says that Kaylee is from Harvest, but the image of that on the "Worlds of the Verse" poster doesn't look like it has much prairie to me, so that combined with the non-canon nature of the RPG book makes me suspect it. I settled on a world that looked very prairie-ish for Kaylee, but I can't remember which one it is, and it would be total conjecture on my part anyway. I've never heard anything at all about Wash's world.

www.browncoats.com sez Zoe was raised on a spaceship, doesn't have much info on the others.

There was something in the Heart of Gold script about Zoe growing up on a spaceship, but there was also mention in the Serenity Visual Companion of Zoe and Mal finding that their home world had been destroyed. She could have been born on Shadow and raised on a ship with only occasional trips home. She may have been born and raised on a ship, but settled on Shadow, or served the Independent Army from Shadow, but there was definite indication that she had ties there.

I like the idea of Mal and Zoe coming from the same world. It might explain why they seem so psychologically joined at the hip. Also, seeing as how Shadow was destroyed, they would be orphans together. But it would be odd that they never spoke explicitly about it. But, the series was cut short.

I also note that they are dressed and armed similarly, in a Western style, which indicates to me that they came from the same place. I envision them coming from a place like the Great Plains of Canada and the U.S., perhaps at the southern end: Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas. Of course the family cattle ranch Mal grew up on would fit nicely there. Perhaps Zoe's father was a cowboy on that ranch. Truth is, there were more Black and Mexican cowboys on the American plains than White. It was hard work for little pay and White folks had better options. Mal was clearly managerial re. his mother telling him how to deal with cattle buyers.

I do wonder about the circumstances around the death of Mal's father.

I have a whole story for Wash. haha Although I don't know how well it jibes with the Float Out yet. ;)

Nice theory, but the actual wording (on page 14 in the Serenity Companion) is "his" world, meaning Mal’s Shadow. Zoe was born vessel side and was career military, not sure what that implies as far as upbringing, maybe an army brat, but she is described as the opposite of Mal, as he was a volunteer.

Mal's and Zoe's military connection came when they both served with the 57th Overlanders and didn’t meet until the third year of the war, same page.

I bow to your superior knowledge of Firefly canon. ;)

Well, as a reference, I happen to have the Companions, so it's not so much superiority. I tend to remember most of what I read, years of practice being a Literature Coach. I knew the phrasing was not "their" when I read it here, as it implies that Mal’s and Zoe’s origins are similar, which they are not. I did double check, though, sometimes I am wrong, even though I have a tough time admitting it.

Well, you see, that's my problem ie. ignorance. I only came aboard Serenity a few months ago when I found the show and movie on Netflix. I've begun ordering the written canon but thus far only have Those Left Behind in hand. It's going to take some time for me to catch up to where you are. This is why I freely admit, your knowledge of the Verse is superior to mine. I appreciate your correction because, until I can read everything, it's the only way I can learn the whole story correct.
