My home base is in Southeastern PA, near Pottstown/Reading area, but coming this Fall, well, August 28th to be exact, I'll be in State College for quite some time. I thought there would have been more Browncoats in this area, but I guess not. :( I would still love to get together with some fans tho..

My other ship is a Mid-Bulk Transport Standard Radion Accelerator Core Class Code 03-K64 Firefly.

You called?
Southeastern PA browncoat here! About an hour north of Philly. My sister and her boyfriend(browncoats since I lent them my DVDs) live in Harrisburg. Nice to know there are some other browncoats in the area.

I was actually thinking about having a Shindig at my place for anyone in the area. It would be fun to get together drink beer, watch Firefly(I have a projector so I could project it onto the side of my barn or something).
What does everyone think? Would you drive an hour north west of Philly for a happin' Shindig(not a BDM shindig, just a regular fun get together)? Just an idea at this point but I thought I'd throw it out there to see if anyone was interested.
Oh, yeah, and I live right near this cool bar with a mechanical bull and free line dancing lessons. Nothing would be more fun than seeing fellow browncoats go flyin off a bull. Besides it keeps with the western theme of Firefly. :)

Perhaps surprisingly, I can only confirm the existence of one Browncoat at CMU besides myself----my 2002 roommate.

I mentioned the show at a meeting of CMU's SF/F group, and of the 10 or so people there, only one had even heard of it.

Am I allowed to 'Huzzah' for my own shindig? ;p :)

So, who else is interested? Any preference on dates? I was thinking around the end of September because of the nice weather.

So far I have come up with the following possible activities:
(I dont think there would be enough time to do all of them)

-Line dancing lessons (lessons are free but the place has an $8 cover charge. must be 21 to enter)
-Mechanical bull (same place as dancing. $5 to ride bull till you fall. always amusing)
-Watch Firefly under the stars projected onto barn. (FREE, but weather permitting. Could move inside and watch on TV if there is rain.)
-BBQ (I'll feed y'all if you come or we can eat at bar's nice restaurant but that costs $$) I'm not a wonderful cook, but I can cook hotdogs and hamburgers without them catching fire....usually. :p
-Horse rides. Can't ride outside of pasture, but I'll give anyone that wants one, a spin or two around the ring on one of my horsies.
-Beer! Yes, beer qualifies as an activity. ;p
-Any other ideas???

I've never planned or attended a "shindig" before, so any and all help on ideas and planning is appreciated. :)

Would you all want to make a weekend of it, or just a Saturday or Sunday? We would need to have a late night to watch Firefly projected because it would have to be dark outside to work.
I'm open to either a weekend or a day thing. I have a large home and a few extra beds. Plus plenty of room for people to pitch sleeping bags on the floor if I run out of beds and couches. Sorry, but if you have allergies then you'd have to stay somewhere else for your own good(there's a hotel within 10 minutes of my home). I have everything you could possibly be allergic to in my home; dust, hay, cats, dogs, etc.

Auto-Huzzah-ing is a perfectly normal activity and nothing to be ashamed of.

Good thoughts. Not too cold, but not too stifling (and, perhaps most importantly, big reductions in the insect populations [unfortunately including fireflies, which would otherwise have been a nice touch]). I'd call that a yay.

Quote:

When is there ever?

Quote:

Never was much for line dancing; reminds me too much of the bar scene from "Antz." I would be willing, however, to provide moral (or, more likely, immoral) support from the side...um...lines.

Quote:

-Mechanical bull (same place as dancing. $5 to ride bull till you fall. always amusing)

This might be a hoot, and a chance to go ballistic without hurting anyone's feelings. It would be an amusing irony were I actually to be slung BY a bull.

Quote:

-Watch Firefly under the stars projected onto barn. (FREE, but weather permitting. Could move inside and watch on TV if there is rain.)

I'm just trying to imagine the looks on the neighbors' faces (or am I revealing my Urban Bias by assuming that any neighbors wouldn't need binoculars and a parabolic mike...)!

This is a truly shiny notion (and look! The horses are in Three-Dee!!).

So, will there be a screen involved, or will our BDHs' performances look strangely wooden...?

Quote:

-BBQ (I'll feed y'all if you come or we can eat at bar's nice restaurant but that costs $$) I'm not a wonderful cook, but I can cook hotdogs and hamburgers without them catching fire....usually. :p

So, it'll be a Mad-Cow-Free event; groovy. Still, either way (burnt or non) would be fine...call them "into-the-black-burgers" (can I get an Oy Vey!?).

Needles to say I favor the BBQ, weather gods permitting.

Quote:

-Horse rides. Can't ride outside of pasture, but I'll give anyone that wants one, a spin or two around the ring on one of my horsies.

I would imagine that the shades of the Marx Brothers would cross over from the nether world, just to be around when I attempt to climb onto the back of a horse. Mustn't disappoint; if you and the fair beasties are amenable, I'd take you up on your gracious offer!

Quote:

-Beer! Yes, beer qualifies as an activity. ;p

Next year, I hope to go Pro.

Quote:

-Any other ideas???

Perhaps something involving guitars and other music-making gear (I can bring a couple of Irish whistles to the table. Maybe even play 'em). Otherwise you've covered more bases in a short time than I could've come up with. Huzzah!

Quote:

I've never planned or attended a "shindig" before, so any and all help on ideas and planning is appreciated. :)

I'm sure we get enough Browncoat brains on this and there's no telling what manner of hi-jinks will ensue.

Quote:

Would you all want to make a weekend of it, or just a Saturday or Sunday? We would need to have a late night to watch Firefly projected because it would have to be dark outside to work.

Actually, a mid-to-late September date would make for earlier sunsets (and tzao gao, will I need a reason to be happy about that!).

My vote would be for a Saturday morning/afternoon to Sunday afternoon, (see, as he deftly invites himself to someone's home, and makes it sound like a helpful suggestion!) if that's workable. Leave enough time for the aforementioned hi-jinks, and a decent 'thon in the evening.

Seriously, though; it's exceedingly cool of you to offer your home for this!!

Quote:

Again revealing that Urban Bias, I gape at the notion!

It's not like my very excellent sleeping bag has seen much use this sodden Summer! It would appreciate the time spent unrolled!

I have the good fortune of being pretty much histaminingless. Perhaps someone could liberate some Claritin from a medical facility, to fight off the Anglo-Sinus Alliance?

This could be VERY pleasantly strange...

Methinks mayhap (and other silly anachronisms) a New, unhijacked thread might serve this cause nicely...

MYORANGEHAT,

My wife and I are definitly interested in a Shindig. A barnside viewing of our BDS would be great and beer is about all any one needs to say to get me anywhere. As for food. I vote for BBQ, I can grill and would be more than happy to offer my cooking skills.
A September date would be great. I think it should be a Saturaday to Sunday Kinda thing. As for additional Activities I have a Tall Card deck and Rules as well as a FireFly LARP written up for people to take a look at.
Having run a shindig before, I suggest you get Phone #'s and emails and start getting people to commit as early as possible. Let me know If you need any other help. Heres my email: Ripper5X5@hotmail.com

Good thread to throw back into the fold here. :)
You did however come a little late to the party and manage to miss three incredibly fun shindigs in NE PA. Those shindig have now have sadly come to an end because I'm off to give college another try. But I think someone should revive and take over the good 'ol PA Shindig since I can't do it anymore. Any volunteers? There is a positively wonderful and friendly group of browncoats sprinkled all around the area though and a few that came from Pittsburg area to the PA Shindig.

I came a little late to the 'Verse itself, later than I'd liked to have at least. I am quite dismayed at the fact that I missed your apparently fantastic shindigs. I've read some threads on it and saw some photos and would have liked nothing more than to have been able to attend.

Sadly, I have yet to actually be present at any sort of shindig or in a collection of Firefly fans over the number of one for that matter. Hopefully, I'll come across someone who is as much of a Big Damn Hero as yourself and be honored by the chance to do that.

For those in the south *eastern* part of PA, the Serenity Saturdays at the Indian Valley Public Library in Telford are starting up again in January. http://serenitysaturdays.blogspot.com/

Judging by last year they should be mighty fine shindigs.

Have you seen the PA Browncoats yahoo group? There seem to be a whole heap of Pittsburgh folks there. 'Coats in Philly seem to be rather thinner on the ground, but there are a few of us.

Hey there! I live just outside of Philly. I'm also one of the organizers of Serenity Saturdays, the second year of which starts in January. One Saturday a month, starting in January, we get together at the Indian Valley Public Library in Telford, PA and show 4 episodes of Firefly in digital projection on a big screen. We end with 'The River Tam Sessions' and 'Serenity'.

Details and directions are here:
