got 4... lost one to old age last month, and I miss him. He was my particular bud, slept across my knees every night. Three of the 4 that are left sleep all over our bed, most nights, and have decided that I'm the person for breakfast-- they wake me at 7 AM, and I get up and feed 'em...

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I am a pet lover in general, but I do love my cats. One in particular, General Wade Hampton (how's that for a pretentious name?) was a rescue kitten from a kill shelter in Georgia. My wife saved him and gave him to me for Father's Day last year. He is my constant companion and a joy in my life.

My wife and I own six cats, all of them rescue cats, and I can't imagine life without them.

I didn't want cats - I've always been a dog person, but two moved in with me several years ago when their original home (18 cats & counting) got too crowded.

They came in through the doggie door. Pretty Kitty (aka Fluffy Kitty, and once was thought of as Slutty Kitty) isn't the least bit bothered by the dog, but Little Kitty (Who started out as Ivan the Terrible before I found out she was a girl) took two years of slinking around the house and lots of chicken to be fully moved in.

Cats. It's nice to have a smallish furry animal around.

Guess I'll keep them.

We have five, all getting on in years. Four were rescued. Two of the boyz were fostered here but judged too far gone (i.e. grown up) when captured to be socialized, so they stayed here. Yeah, riiiiight. Two gigantic fuzzy love-sluts, so big I can barely lift them.
Fear not. They are all vaccinated, childless indoor guys (and a gal who aren't allowed to go out to feast on the local songbird population.

Leave us not, in the interest of accuracy, omit the well-known retch-and-splat sound sequence.
We had for years a beautiful Big Red, Sting by name, who delighted in presenting this performance from the greatest height available, for maximum effect, both sound and practical.

The other day I heard enthusiastic hair-ball noises from a bedroom. Fearing the worst, I peeked around the corner of the doorway. All five fuzzers were there, snuggled into an unblemished duvet, looking at me as if I must be hallucinating. Nothing on the floor, either.

Ai, how do they do it?

They are cuddly and spunky and fluffy and they have tiny little noses!

They make adorable mewing sounds! Except when they burp and have gassies. But that's kind of adorable! But not when they stink up the joint.

If they're not sleeping in a little ball of aww then they're off having ADVENTURES!

*abrupt mood shift* And they are also the true overlords of human and dog. Unfortunately, dog-kind has yet to understand this. *blank/sober*

*moodshift* =^_^=

Dog-kind who had this sort of issue in the home in which I was raised and trained ("underfoot, with other children, and pets" is probably the proper advert-phrase Mom would have used in carrying out threats to find me a better home) were quickly disabused of any notion of canine supremacy by our Numbah One Black Pantha-Pussycat (nowadays he'd be called "Basement Cat" in a pathetic poverty of expression) who counted his coup in terms of cross-nose scratch scars. Why waste time? Use the old Ali rope-a-dope technique, back into a strategic corner, and come out with ten sharp ones. Lesson learned.

Of course, it may have been the dog breed in question. Heaven knows what that guy would have done with a Weimaraner - - probably co-ruled the world! With laugh-tracks.

Ayep, we're doomed.

*snicker*

Actually, the one combination you never ever wanna have is cats and ferrets, because they will convince each other to do things neither one would have EVER thought of on their own.

And anything interesting you own will go missing, believe it.

As the old saying goes, "Dogs have owners, cats... have staff" :-)

Just 2 now, Fizzgig and Orin The Fractal Cat (still growing). If Orin continues to behave like she is, she'll be as good a mouser as the Fizz....I think she's part Ninja. (We live in a rural area and the cats earn their keep :-)

And...I swear to ghod that Fizzgig just brought a mouse in! Trouble is she tends to bring 'em back alive!. Much mousie chasing shenanigins avoided for the moment as this one wasn't. I think she's just showing off to the kitten :-)

Both unbearably cute too of course.

Nick

Our cat Tinkerbell used to bring live mice back. One time I was in the livingroom. Mom was taking a nap in the bedroom. Tink went by (think "cat-on-a-mission") to the bedroom as fast as she could go, with Dad in hot pursuit. She jumped up on the bed, Dad caught her (mouse in mouth) and raced back though the house to the door to put them both outside. Mom never woke up.

Speaking of cats, I've been reading a good new picture book called "Cat Secrets" by Jef Czekaj. Kinder through third grade have loved it so far. It's their favorite new book of the week.

Superb youtube, frem!

That cat-and-ferret thing is probably an animal version of "folie a deux." For a human example, see Randy and Evi Quaid.

And while I'm computing this morning my cat creeps up behind me on the sofa, borrows half under a blanket, and now he's staring at me from his cave and purring. I'm so that stick figure in xkcd: "You're a kitty!" How am I supposed to get anything done with this going on?

Almost as cute as:

Which I've probably posted here several times but it just doesn't get old.

Earth Hour is coming.
March 26, 2011, 8:30-9:30PM your local time, turn outside lights down to minimum safety levels and consider how you can make it permanent.
I will bore you to death with this for the next few days.
Please remember that "in season" our little fireflies need darkness so they can find each other for the purpose of propagating their species, and that humans as a species make an unhealthy amount of light. Turn ‘em off and snuggle up!
