I thought about this last night while watching Out of Gas. If the show had not been cancelled, it could have very well ended up like the other 2 Joss shows. There very well could have been crew additions...which adds even more layers to what the show could have turned into! What kind of people would join the crew? Who would be replaced?(While that would be sad and I dont wanna think of who...but its inevitable on a Joss Whedon show) Who would play the new characters?? (Bring back Alexis Denisof!) I wanna know everybody's thoughts on this!!

I think there would've been a cast turn-over with Book, Simon, and River. We would've found out Book's secret(s), Simon might have character evolution and progressively become more interesting or he would probably get captured or killed. I can't see River keeping up with her character indefinitely. She will either get recaptured and operated on again or she will get crazier and have to be put down.

I like Michelle Tractenburg as an addition to the cast. She could maybe play Kaylee's sister. Or myabe Inara's sibling? She's got the looks for it. The mechanic off Andromeda could play a relative of Wash's. I mean he does look like Wash! Guest spot for him.

Just some ideas off the top of my head.

Yeah (I'm about to get eaten alive for saying this) I think Simon...while very clever and a great doctor, was not meant to be on the show for a terribly long time...maybe right after him and Kaylee hook up...he would've been taken out. Like in the middle of S2 or sometihng. I dunno...my mind's rambling again..I might wanna look to that.

It's hard to predict which characters might have been written out, but it's a safe bet that someone would have been. Let's face it: Whedon and Minear just love to kill folk.

It's impossible to guess who might have joined the cast in future seasons, but I think Inara is the clear favourite to have died a tragic death before the series' end.

If not Inara, then my second guess would be Simon. If he was killed, then Mal probably would have become River's primary protector/guardian.

But we definitely would have seen some Buffyverse actors in guest roles. Probably not as regulars, though. It's too... hokey.

Ooh, that would be such a great idea! The lonely, surly, captain has to step up to the responsibility of dealing with River. It's intriguing.

I could see James Marsters playing a part, either small and recurring or a one(or three or whatever) episode stand, simply because he's a wonderful actor and could pull off a former browncoat, or alliance villian or miscellaneous other character fairly well.

I also agree with Inara and then Simon dying. They're the relationship potentials, and we all know how JW likes to kill relationships. Wash and Zoe seem too central to be killed off so soon, but then again...

I agree with you about Wash and Zoe. I may be reading too much into it, but my thinking was that the Wash/Zoe relationship was the closest Joss will probably ever come to using his own marriage as a template. Quirky, funny guy married to a strong, independent (no pun intended) woman. I don't know Joss' wife obviously, but I imagine that's how Joss sees her.

I think Wash/Zoe would have been on the show for the long haul, if for no other reason that to allow Joss to explore a more adult, long-term relationship on his shows than he's normally used to. I think we would have seen them fight, I think we would have seen them have a baby, and I think we would have (eventually) seen them settle down together somewhere. Even Joss knows you have to have a happy ending sometimes.

I'd like to have seen Saffron join the regular cast. She could have pulled off a turnaround similar to Spike in Buffy.

Michelle Tractenberg?

I'm afraid I must respectfully disagree most vehemently. What were they thinking introducing Dawn to Buffy? What were they thinking keeping her on after the season five storyline had finished? Ugh.

Book, I think, would be the least painful loss with his rather lofty "that is illogical" persona that sets him apart in this loveably uncouth company.

Simon, I'm not teriffically fond of, but wimps always mature into warriors in past Whedon shows. Look at Giles and Wes from the Buffyverse.

Every member of the crew is removeable... completely.

I think it would be an interesting event to have the entire crew die sans River. River is the conduit to the crew that was with the crew that is. She finds and effectively hires new people to crew the ship relying on the ghosts of the previous crew untill they are all finally replaced and able to move on. Then we would find out that river is actually past also but wanted Serinity to have a good home as serinity has been a good home to her also but only she had the ability to manifest to other people.

The show is about the ship not the crew.

Hmmm...
This sounds like something River would think.
Crazy talk.
The show centers around Mal and his search for freedom in a verse threatening to stifle the individual spirit. Serenity is a tool for telling that story.

My opinion about who would die first (assuming any of them died) would be Zoe, and there are three reasons why:

1 - Joss never seems to allow a happy relationship to prosper on his shows. Something tragic always happens when a couple becomes complacent. Zoe and Wash, being complacent from the start (compared to the other characters, that is - they are not without their disagreements) are bound to have something happen to them.

2 - A death in the Whedonverse needs to have a great impact on the other characters. Zoe's death would be a huge blow to Mal, as she has been his right-hand woman for years. It would tip the balance of power more towards Jayne, who would be the most prominent "fighter" and toughest member of the crew. And of course it would have a devastating effect on Wash, possibly changing his entire outlook on the world and giving him an EXTREMELY interesting story-arc.

3 - Zoe's function on the ship (and thus, the show) could be filled by other characters, in a way that Mal's (captain), Wash's (pilot), Inara's ("ambassador"), Kaylee's (mechanic), or Simon's (doctor) couldn't.

But then again, Joss delights in surprising us, which is what I love about his shows, so what do I know?

STARPILOTGRAINGER

I know someone's already mentioned it, but I always figured if the show continued long enough, Saffron would have joined the crew.

I think Inara would of been the one who would of died or been the 1st to die and it probably would of been right after her and Mal got together sending Mal back to a really dark place. And i also think Saffron would of joined the crew at some point and maybe as a new love intrest for Mal.

Mind you, they already had Zoe lying on the brink of death, so Joss/Tim may think it too obvious.

Inara death - hinted at, and it would be nice to see Mal just completely self destruct, along with you know, the whole crew.

River - probably too much invested in her as far as story arcs + Blus Sun are concerned.

Now if it were Kaylee, I would jump off a bridge.
I'm kidding of course.

It'd be a cliff.

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

Well, these thoughts on which crew members would be killed & how they could be replaced are sure bringin' my interest to a middle.

Another way to expand Firefly in future seasons would be to expand the 'verse. Add recurring characters outside of Serenity. A couple that I'd like to see are:

An officer from the independence movement who is actively fighting the Alliance (in contrast to just trying to avoid them, which is what Mal & the crew are doing). I could see up to half a dozen appearances over the season, during which sometimes you think he's doin' it for Dixie (I mean, independence) and others you think it's just for blood & money, at the end of the season you're still not sure.

Another smuggler, running a ship like Serenity, but with a personality in marked contrast to Mal's -- a big guy with a big laugh & big appetites. He might seem to have more in common with Jayne, including not being as smart as Mal, but there would be the odd incident to make you wonder about that. Plus, Joss could write the Firefly version of the Great Keelboat Race.

And, of course, Badger, Patience, Niska & Saphron

I'd also like to see a short arc during which the crew get their wish: money (well off), safe for a few eps from threats to life & liberty, and see how it changes the way they relate to each other.

Aw, heck; ain't gonna be no new series. Joss ain't gonna write it. Reckon I'd best do it myself.
