Just wondering how many of my fellow browncoats are Red Dwarf fans as well? I was happy to see Mal, the MST3K crew, and The Doctor on the 25 greatest sci-fi legends of all time, but I think Lister or Rimmer should have made the list as well. The show is the second longest running BBC show ever next to Doctor Who and it is gorram funny. The DVDs are now available and worth the money, so check them out and spread the word. There is an effort to bring this crew to the big screen and we need to support it through DVD sales. This is the best sci-fi comedy ever, so spend the money.

Death? It's like being on holiday with a group of Germans. - Arnold Judas Rimmer

For the uninitiated, Lister is played by Craig Charles who hosted Robot Wars. One of the hosts of Junkyard Wars, Robert Llewellyn, played Kryten, and one of the vampires in Blade II was played by the same actor who played Cat in the series. The most banal connection to main stream success goes to Chris Barrie, who played the butler the Lara Croft movies.

You are correct. The movie is in production, but it has been in that state for a long time. The series ended in '98 and the movie has been hinted at since then. The actors are just getting older, and I'm just trying to create some buzz on a hot sci-fi site.
I'm glad to see that you are aware of the series and the film.

Huge Red Dwarf fan here. I own seasons 1-4 on DVD and are waiting patiently for season 5. Although they don't seem in a hurry to release it.

Well, I got season 1 and 2 one year and 3/4 the same month the following year, so best guess is I get 5/6 when I get my tax check next year!

Long time fan here - and making new fans every chance I get, which is easier with the DVD's

Stopped holding breath for movie, when I turned that lovely shade of blue, nice color but just not ... me.

Too many favorite scenes to count but have a special fondness for Mr. Flibble.

Red Dwarf V is being released (in the UK, at least) on November 8th. Series 6 is due to follow sometime in February 2005.

I also like Red Dwarf and, on the whole, I think it has actually been getting better and better. Only thing which is not so good is that Cat has got less cat-like. I didn't notice this at the time, as it happened very gradually... but when I re-watch episodes from older series, Danny John Jules is so feline I end up lmao.

I love Red Dwarf.

What is Red Dwarf? It's a British comedy/sci-fi show about some people who get stranded in deep space. Lister is the human that went into stasis. While he was out, the entire crew got wiped out in a radiation leak. When he gets out, all that's left is himself; the stupid talking computer, Holly; a hologram of his dead bunkmate and enemy, Rimmer; and a humanoid that evolved from his cat's kids (They just call him Cat). Then they pick up a robot named Kryten and eventually, Listers long lost love, Kristine Kochanski. They go around the universe encountering bizzar things like time travel, aliens, robots, all sorts of fun stuff. But it's a comedy, so it's really really funny. Lister is the slobbiest person ever. Rimmer is a neat an tidy person. They fight all the time. Cat thinks he is the coolest thing to ever exist and Kryten is obsessed with chores.

I don't know if it's still on, but you can get the DVDs.

Any US Firefly fans who haven't seen Red Dwarf should definitely check it out. Not that it's similar, but it is superb (though the last two series (7 & 8) were arguably slightly less brilliant).

And if you need further convincing, there's a tenuous Joss Whedon connection. Red Dwarf was mentioned by the Trio in season 6 of Buffy.

I've loved Red Dwarf for years. In fact, I have the first 4 DVD's. I made the mistake of loaning out number 2 to someone who never returned it, and I am still looking for it as a single to repurchase.

Now that I know Chris was in Tomb Raider, I guess I will just have to watch it. That man has some comedic timing.

Greetings,

I've been a 'Scaper, a Browncoat and a Smeghead since day one. Can anybody ELSE here say that? :)

Red Dwarf first came out in my area here in the states on the Seattle PBS station KCTS. They were into the third season in the UK, and were showing a marathon in the States to drum up donations for KCTS. I have every episode on tape, recorded off TV, the entire VHS run that was released, and the first four seasons on DVD. I also have autographs from Danny John-Jules, Craig Charles, Robert Llewellyn and Norman Lovett (Holly I) from various conventions they've attended in the northwest and from websites.

Yeah, I really like Red Dwarf, and it's a pity that the movie is in such limbo. However, I don't think the series has played as well since one of it's creators jumped ship back in the 90's. You can tell that Seasons 7 and 8 were just not as good as the first six, and that's a shame, because I thought the series started to get good in Season 3, then kicked major A$$ by Season 6. My favorite episode remains "Inquisitor."

Kryten - (Regarding the Inquisitor, a time-travelling robot set on eliminating those who have not lived a worthy life.) "He prunes away the wastrels, and deletes the worthless."

Rimmer - "We're in big trouble."

Anyhoo, I love that show and heartily recommend it to anyone who likes their sci-fi biting and humorous.

Oooo, I'm jealous. I have Danny John-Jules' autograph on two of the Red Dwarf books (which I keep in a ziplock whenever they leave the house).

My favorite episode would have to be either "White Hole", "Backwards", or "Demons and Angels".

Actually, I'll go you one better - a 'Scaper, a Browncoat, a Smeghead, a B5er, and a Trekkie. Well, I was a Trekkie until Voyager. After that it was all downhill...

As for the "Crimson Rouge One", I actually quite liked Series 8. But I agree that Series 7 was pretty lacklustre - mainly because Chris Barrie was only in half the episodes. Red Dwarf without Rimmer is like... well, it would be like Firefly without Mal. More than Lister, I think Rimmer is the centre of the Dwarf universe.

Big fan here too. Also have all the shows taped from KCTS. I never forgave them for digitally remastering all the effects and ship exterior shots.

IMO, the first few seasons were the best -- they were funnier because their outlook was so much bleaker.

Hey,

It wasn't KCTS that did it, I hope that's not what you're saying about the digital effects, but I agree...it sucked beyond the telling of it.

DIGITAL EFFECTS ENHANCEMENTS

I loved the old effects, I thought they were very well done, but just this side of cheesy. It fit the tone of the series beautifully. They were all big models hung from wires and flown around a soundstage. Some of the effects were really impressive, considering the cost and techniques used.

Yup. Red Dwarf was not Doctor Who...their effects were as good as their stories, in most cases. Oh, and the Science Fiction Museum in Seattle, Washington has some props from RD on display, as well as featuring the ORIGINAL Red Dwarf in it's "Spacedock" section...along with Moya and the Enterprise.

So, if you like your science fiction gritty and abrasive, you WILL love this show.

I have to admit, I haven't seen much of 6 or 7 but I must agree that Red Dwarf sucks where there is no Rimmer! You just can't help but love the big smeghead!

And I don't really like the 'new' Rimmer because he hasn't 'grown" like our favorite Rimsy! But it's still Chris, so who cares! ;)

I think most fans would agree that series 3-6 are Red Dwarf's glory years... though there is some GREAT stuff in series 2.

Series 7 suffered from lack of Rimmer, and series 8... well mostly it was good. You have to give them points for trying to shake things up, I'm just not convinced it worked. Glad as I was to see Holly and the Dwarf back - everything that came with it? Didn't work for me. If Lister is no longer the Last Human, then what exactly is the purpose of the show?

I'd still love one last adventure, though, just to wrap up some of those loose ends...

--------------------------------------
"The time for talking is over. Now call it extreme if you like, but I propose we hit it hard, and we hit it fast, with a major - and I mean MAJOR - leaflet campaign." Rimmer.

"Um, I think we're all beginning to lose sight of the real issue here, which is "What are we going to call ourselves?" And I think it comes down to a choice between The League Against Salivating Monsters or my own personal preference, which is The Committee for the Liberation and Integration of Terrifying Organisms and their Rehabilitation Into Society. Um, one drawback with that... the abbreviation is C.L.I.T.O.R.I.S." Rimmer. Again.

Seeing as I'm in a Red Dwarf-quoting mood, here's a couple of my favourite gems from the series

RIMMER: Those kind of films really irritate me. Just not realistic. There isn't a man in the universe who wouldn't have taken the job and to hell with the woman. Total baloney.
LISTER: Rimmer, you said that about "King of Kings: The Story of Jesus"!
RIMMER: Well, it's true! A simple carpenter's son who learns how to do magic tricks like that and doesn't go into show-business? Do any of us believe that, even for a second?
LISTER: He was supposed to be the Son of God.
RIMMER: And when he was carrying that cross up the hill, any normal realistic bloke would have mule-kicked the guy on the left, clobbered the one on the right, and been over that green hill and far away before you could say "Pontius Pilate."
-------------------------------------------------

KRYTEN: They've taken Mr. Rimmer. Sir! They've taken Mr. Rimmer!
CAT: Quick, let's get out of here before they bring him back!
-------------------------------------------------

RIMMER: Look, I'm not much good at big speeches, and I know I haven't always been an easy guy to get on with. And I know that, given the choice, I probably wouldn't have chosen you as friends. But I just want to say that over the years I have come to regard you as... people... I met.
-------------------------------------------------

LISTER: I dunno though. This wooden horse of Troy malarkey, I'm not buyin' that.
RIMMER: It's one of the most famous military maneuvers in history!
LISTER: I mean, the Greeks have been camped outside Troy, kerpowing, zapping, and kersplatting the Trojans for the best part of a decade, yeah?
RIMMER: So?
LISTER: So all of a sudden they wake up one mornin' and the Greeks have gone. And there outside the city walls they've left this gift; this tribute to their valiant foes: a huge wooden horse, just large enough to happily contain 500 Greeks in full battle dress and still leave adequate room for toilet facilities? Are you telling me not one Trojan goes, "Hang on a minute, that's a bit of a funny prezzy. What's wrong with a couple hundred pairs of socks and some aftershave?" No, they don't - they just wheel it in and all decide to go for an early night! People that stupid deserve to be kerpowed, zapped and kersplatted in their beds! You know what the big joke is? From this particular phase in history we derived the phrase "Beware of Greeks bearing gifts", when it would be much more logical to derive the phrase, "Beware of Trojans, they're complete smegheads!"
-------------------------------------------------

LISTER: Cat?
CAT: Mmm?
LISTER: Y'ever see the Flintstones?
CAT: Sure!
LISTER: D'ya think Wilma's sexy?
CAT: Wilma Flintstone?
LISTER: Maybe we've been alone in deep space too long, but every time I see that show, her body drives me crazy. Is it me?
CAT: I think in all probability, Wilma Flintstone is the most desirable woman who ever lived.
LISTER: That's good. I thought I was goin' strange.
CAT: She's incredible!
LISTER: What d'ya think of Betty?
CAT: Betty Rubble? (Pause) Well, I would go with Betty... but I'd be thinking of Wilma.
LISTER: This is crazy. Why are we talking about going to bed with Wilma Flintstone?
CAT: You're right. We're nuts. This is an insane conversation.
[one of the best timed pauses in comedy history]
LISTER: She'll never leave Fred and we know it.

I could not agree more! Anyone else think that more shows should do this? A few scattered incidents on DVDs surely only scratch the surface of what's really available for shows like Buffy, Angel, Farscape, Babylon 5, the various Treks... even Firefly probably has a larger blooper reel than was on the DVD.

RIMMER: I wasn't very highly sexed, to be honest with you. I think it was all that school cabbage I was forced to eat as a boy. Still, the first time, the first ever time, was with this girl I met at Cadet College - Sandra. We did it in the back of my brother's car.
LISTER: What was it like?
RIMMER: Oh, brilliant. Incredible. (Goes glassy-eyed) Bentley V8 convertible. Walnut burr panelling. Marvellous machine, marvellous. So what about you?
LISTER: Michelle Fisher. The ninth hole of the Bootle Municipal golf course. Par four, dogleg to the right, in the bunker behind the green.
RIMMER: You lost your virginity on a golf course? How did you have the nerve?
LISTER: It wasn't in the middle of the Ryder Cup or anything. It was midnight.
RIMMER: Oh, I seeee.
LISTER: Michelle. Michelle Fisher. God, she was gorgeous.
RIMMER: How old were you?
LISTER: Just gorgeous. If she'd have wanted, she could probably have got a job behind the perfume counter at Lewis', that's how good-looking she was.
RIMMER: How old were you?
LISTER: She took off all her clothes and just stood there in front of me, completely naked. I was so excited, I nearly dropped my skateboard.
RIMMER: Skateboard?! How old were you?
LISTER: Twelve.
RIMMER: Twelve!!! Twelve years old!!? You lost your virginity when you were twelve???
LISTER: Yeah.
RIMMER: Twelve?? (Pause) Well, you can't have been a full member of the Golf Club, then.

Used to have that very t-shirt....

As regard the movie, Chris Barrie was interviewed for this month's SFX - the movie is not dead, but is not moving forwards very quickly. Given Chris Barrie's agent is also a producer, his finger is pretty much on the pulse. My guess is they need to get moving on it in the next year or so at the latest.

After dragging on for so long, I'm really doubtful now that the movie will EVER get made. And I don't mind admitting that there's a part of me that thinks maybe that's for the best.

Maybe it would be better just to a ninth season and end it there. Which begs the question: how do you all see Red Dwarf ending? What would be the perfect final episode/scene?

Let's see...the first one is from, I think, "Holoship." The second is from, I believe, "Holoship" again. The third, oh wait, ALSO from "Holoship." The fourth is from "Inquisitor," which is one of my favorites. The last one, I remember the sequence well...it's probably the single best bit of dialogue from ANY season, but I can't remember the particular episode. I think it's from "Bodyswap", but I know it's from the third or fourth season. I used to have that very bit of dialogue on my computer as my startup tone. "Red Dwarf" has the best comedic dialogue of any series in science fiction history. No doubt about it.

Here's another:

Kryten: "I remember Mr Rimmer spotted an S3 planet on the scope, and wanted to claim it on behalf of the Space Corps. As usual, the ceremony consisted of planting the flag and singing all 23 stanzas of the Space Corps anthem. Then the planet started to erupt around us, which frankly, came as something of a relief." - Rimmerworld

Yeah...it rocks.

By the way, did any of you fellow Dwarfers know that there were TWO abortive attempts to bring the series to US screens as an American offering? Both were tentatively called Red Dwarf USA. The first featured Craig Bierko as Lister, Hinton Battle (a famed dancer/singer, he was the demon character in the famous singing "Buffy" episode) as Cat, Jane Leeves (Daphne on "Frasier") as Holly, and Chris Eigeman (Lionel on "Malcolm in the Middle") as Rimmer. Robert Llewellyn flew in from England to reprise his role as the android "Kryten." The show was produced and developed for US audiences by "Malcolm" creator Linwood Boomer.

It was a flop with the studios.

They recast the role of Cat to bring the show more "sex appeal" and signed up a then little-known actress as a hot FEMALE cat to sex up the show. The actress in question was none other than the oh-so-hot Terry Farrell, before she was cast in Deep Space Nine (Dax).

Just FYI.

"Backwards"...riiiiiiiiiiiiight.

I was thinking it was "Backwards," but couldn't remember how it worked into the rest of the episode. Yup. "Backwards" it is. What a classic THAT episode was. Brilliant.

Greetings,

I've been a 'Scaper, a Browncoat and a Smeghead since day one. Can anybody ELSE here say that? :)

Yes, I can for Farscape and Red Dwarf, at least...didn't become a Browncoat until the DVDs my friends forced us to watch (Thanks, guys...we love ya!!!)

It's a New Year's Day tradition among our Klingon/Scaper/B5/Jedi/Smeghead/Browncoat friends to serve Triple-Fried-Egg-Chilli-Chutney sandwiches for breakfast...The episode where Lister gets Rimmer to try one is a classic...and Yes, your face DOES make those contortions when you try one the first time!

I just got a new toaster this weekend, and I'm still pissed that it doesn't ask me if I'd like a piece of nice, fresh, tasty toast....

Blade 2 worked for me primarily because of Danny John-Jules kick-ass ninja vampire moves and costume! (the rest of the movie was ok, but I was SO happy to see DJJ in something new!)

And yes, my ring tone (and also the song we came into our wedding reception on) is the Red Dwarf end theme ("Shipwrecked & Comatose")....Smeghead, and proud of it! (but I admit, if I could get a good Firefly monophonic ring tone, I'd switch off for awhile...)

Let me fly, far away from here.
Fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sun.

I want to lie shipwrecked and comotose,
Drinking fresh mango juice,
Goldfish shoals nibbling at my toes.
Fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sun
Fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sun.

There's another verse that they don't play on the show, but it's on the soundtrack.

I'll pack my bags and head into hyperspace
Velocity at time-warp speed
Spend my days in ultra violet rays
Fun fun fun in the sun sun sun

We're locked on a course straight through the universe
You and me and the galaxy
Reached this stage, this hyperactive age
Fun fun fun in the sun sun sun
Fun fun fun in the sun sun sun

Thanks for posting this! This song is very special to me (see post above...), and I'm glad to now have ALL the verses!

Anyway, yeah, the Smeg ups/outs are hi-larious, but has anyone seen that cooking show thing that's on one of the DVDs? That had me laughing to tears! It's called "Can't Cook Won't Cook" and it has the actors on it, but they're playing their characters, except Cat isn't Cat. He's Dwayne Dibbly.

EEK! No, I hadn't seen this one! Dwayne Dibbly has got to be one of the funniest characters they ever did on that show....somehow his character (and catch phrase) manages to sneak into many conversations around our little geek campfire here...
