I've missed you too, Lila! Sorry to hear the house didn't work out, that's very sad.
I'm good. I'm doing schoolwork all the time. It's a lot of work to become a scientist, who knew? And it's still early days, I'm sure it will be even more fun once I get the basics out of the way and transfer. It really is actual fun, though, don't get me wrong. Life as a full-time student is pretty sweet. And I can cut my load in half over the summer, so that will also be pretty sweet.
Three finals presentations to do. I'm appalled at the idea of so much talking in front of people. I should get back to putting my speeches together, but I just... don't wanna. Crazy days.

Oooo... Lab Coat! Yay Rose!

(Of course you could go all "naughty mad scientist" with it, but that's probably not what she meant.)

I'm slogging through GenChem 2, and beginning to dread the thought of Organic Chem 1 in the Fall.

This summer's got intensive field research and then Calc 1 on the slate.
GenChem 2 may join it if I don't get at least a "C" this semester because then a) Med School will frown, and b) Organic will not let me proceed apace.

On the bright side, if I don't get into medical school I will be ideally suited to life as a science teacher of some form what with the broad base of knowledge I'm accumulating.

The required learnin' is deep and wide here.
Bio, Chem, Orgo, Ecology, Genetics, Physics, Structure and Function, Diversity of plants/mammals/invertebrates/microorganisms/fish [pick 3], Evolution, Cell Biology, Environment, and several heavy electives of your choice.

I'm slated for Entomology (diversity of invertebrates)and Toxicology (for the hell of it) next term.

They've got a class on Emerging Diseases, and another on Epidemiology that look interesting but I'll have to wait until the following year because I need to get the stuff I'll need for the MCATs out of the way next year first.

Biochemistry sounds fun in a "hurt your brain" kind of way.

Rosie, I've been reading a book called Organic Chemistry as a Second Language. Yes, in my spare time, I'm not even in a chem class yet, they say I need more math. Anyway, not terribly far in it due to the lack of spare time but so far it's excellent, I highly recommend it. Author is David Klein.

Make sure you get through log/natural log and e before attempting Chem. General Chemistry 2 is the first place I've run into it. I'm taking College Algebra/Precalc and we didn't get to that section until last week, which was of course about four weeks too late to help me. The prof was bitching about how she's been trying to get Precalc as a prerequisite for her class for years. (She doesn't want to teach algebra, she wants to teach chemistry and it slows her down.)
So yeah, teh maths first. Or at least before you need it. Stats will help too, since there's a LOT of chewy math things involved in analyzing and interpreting your data, and computers can't do it all for you. Unfortunately.
But it would be nice.

Get friendly with your calculator while you're at it. It will be the next best thing to your eraser.

PS: MSA- please hiss at your brother for me. With flames coming out your eyes and your head spinnning around 360 if possible. Thx!

I'm taking stats over the summer. Intro to chemistry requires the math I'm in now, and I'm signed up for that in the fall, though if they add a bio class in the afternoon I'll switch to that so I can get more of the math done first. As it is, though, every single bio class being offered is at the same time as my algebra and English comp classes with my favorite teachers ever, so I'm signed up for the intro to chemistry. However, even with that by the time I get to General Chem 2 I should have plenty of math under my belt, because it probably won't be until next fall.
Wheeeeeeee.

btw I <3 my calculator. And a couple of my math teachers have at least touched on logarithms, though I doubt I could dredge up that info at this point... wasn't required for the class, so we didn't spend oodles of time on them.

I think I've heard of that O-chem book. From reviews it appears thinking of O-chem as a second language with parts of speech and how they fit together and what the parts of speech mean can be a vary useful analogy. It might be even more efficient than memorizing the specific chemical bonds and structures.

Uv COURSE The Gee is speshylz! Silly Gee.

So I've got today off. Boychild and Doctroid are out on an Adventure. (Museums beware!)

I've got a chemistry lab report (last one), chemistry "reflection paper" for my service project, math homework, math lab packet, and four subjects' worth of studying to do before Tuesday.

I'm debating if I should take this day as the Spring Break I never got, or use my time wisely and get at least some of this crap finished so I can start cramming for finals that much sooner.

Since there is no tub here, and the weather is not very enticing, I'm thinking it's going to be "get stuff done".

The morning after my last final I'm totally sleeping in until 8am. Unless something prevents it. Or I've got stuff to do.

Then I should take up residence in the bar when I'm not packing. (House not officially bought yet, still paperwork and bank appraisal and stuff to do. But I'll be gone for 5 weeks and can't pack for the move at a distance.)

Oh. Which reminds me. If I drop off the face of the earth for almost two months it's because I'll be in a place where internet service is almost nonexistent and highly limited. Plus I'll be busy from sometime before dawn to at least 10pm, "80 hour weeks are not uncommon" is how they put it and 10 PM is Noises Off time. For five weeks I do this.. late May through July 1. Before and after that I pack and move. Unless something goes dreadfully wrong with the deal. Which is the way these things usually seem to go.

"How come things never go schmooth?"

I'll keep my fingers and toes crossed between now and closing. Which will make taking notes in class very difficult.

Two batches of homebrew bottled (about 13 gallons total) and it only took two trips to the supply store! (This includes sanitizing, prep, locating everything at least once, and most of cleanup.)

Cadbury Caramel Egg ice cream, version one.. in the freezer.
Math lab packet: done.

Math homework due Tuesday: over halfway done (soon, possibly by midmorning).

Chemistry lab: not even close (tomorrow).

"Reflection" paper: lol. Maybe by the time it's due.

Fringe and Sanctuary: watched.

Mancala: played with Boychild

Easter eggs: dyed with Boychild

Lunch and dinner: cooked and consumed with family.

Laundry: two loads down.

Dishes: Boychild's problem. (He's a good boy. With prodding. )

Herd: ridden over (see above).

All that on just two cups of coffee...

Can I be tired now? Where's the snoring emoticon?

I'm going to try getting through at least one row of knitting socks before passing out tonight. Oh, gotta play Bunny first. Right.

Thanks Rose! Ickle widdums cuters!

I'm not observant, except that dying eggs is fun and candy is tasty. It's mostly carrying on traditions from childhood and trying to preserve a little bit of the "ooh-ahh" magic of mysterious magical beings bringing prezzies to the moderately well-behaved.
Any excuse to get more chocolate in the house...

Besides, you can't stop my mother. She's the North Poles' PacNW outpost, E.B. central, and overall overindulgence overlord.
My role in all this for the last 11 years has been minimal. (Stay up until child is asleep..try to move quietly..put out stuff..act surprised in morning.)
I still don't like the deception of it all, but the look on their faces when they're little is amazing. ("Always tell the truth, little one. Mommy will never lie to you. Except about Santa and the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy, but other than that..")

Speaking of perpetual surprise, I keep logging in in the blue fff site, and ending up on the brown one and logging in again. I'm not used to the new place.
Is the old one slated for demolition any time soon? I'll need enough advance warning to bookmark this one and delete the old link.

See? I can still talk about things related to this site and Firefly. I just need the right random thought.

There's a fellow who posted something about his degree and the fandom thanking us. His screen name is Captainawesome99. Wrong fandom, dude.. that's Chuck. (Though I do enjoy that show.)

I love recognizing faces from one show on another. An actress who was on Chuck just showed up on Bones. I realized about a year ago that Cam from Bones was the teacher in Serenity. I think the fellow playing Magnus' father on Sanctuary did the voice work for Myst/Riven (video games).

So far today I've gotten coffee, seem to be successfully avoiding a migraine for now, and had breakfast. (Sesame bagel, toasted with lots of butter and the last of the homemade peach jam.) Boychild has reached his candy limit until at least 11am.

I'm willing to admit Spring's finally creeping in around the edges. The peepers are getting quieter. You could hear them over the wind and rain the other night. Plus: daffodils blooming. Five deer were calmly grazing their way across my back yard yesterday. (No, not browsing for a change, they were after the plants in the lawn.)

Okay. Back to work. Maths is done. Time to rock the chem lab report.

...is it just me or am I REALLY rambling on lately...?

Pumpernickel and Seedy breads started. I'll bake them in the morning. (Fridge overnight.)
It's a thank-you to the prof who gave me an intro to the Doc who's lecturing tomorrow who gave me an intro to the head of the pathology dept at one of the local hospitals. (She's coming in from Mt. Sinai to discuss the nervous system with us. Plus: she's an alumn. Too cool.)

Dying eggs is fun. Candy is poison (I admit I'm biased on that.)
Being childless, I do have less reason to devote my time to egg coloring. Used to take my family all day.
My parents didn't really tell me there was a Santa or Easter Bunny in the literal sense. They were symbolic metaphorical mascots for some kind of tradition and time off from school, but the parents were their, I dunno, representative or something. It never came as a shock to me that it was all mom and dad, because it always had been. I still enjoyed hunting eggs and getting presents and finding quarters under my pillow, I can assure you. So, you know, if you don't like the deception or worry about traumatizing your kid, don't worry that knowing it's you will lessen his enjoyment of it. What's not to like about playing games, having candy, getting presents, and waking up with money?

I still have my weekly website-inspired paper to write for psych. Gah. I've exhausted the links the teacher gave us, such as they were, and started finding my own stuff a few weeks ago, and I'm totally out of ideas. Might just have to miss one, here. I hate to do that.

Okay, one diagram of an electrolytic cell to sketch and the damned lab is done.

There's still a five page essay on "how I helped my community through chemistry", a meeting to initiate and complete a presentation on said project, and the presentation this weekend. (Mini-conferencesque thingy from 9-4 on Saturday. Just how I want to spend my weekend when I could be studying.. and no, franky, the fact that there will be pizza does not hold the same all-forgiving charm for me that it does for the 18 year olds.)
"Grump, frump, grumble, crotchety geezer mumble, grump".

If any of you are familiar with the 76th's own Zeppo, he's got a link to an Easter short he's in on Twitter. Is funny.

I baked bread this morning. I have it with me now. Four loaves, two pumpernickel and two seed loaf. It will go to people as "thank you" today. This is the best the lab's smelled in... ever really.

A day that starts off smelling this good cannot be all bad simply because this portion of the day was in it. Not challenging worse, just saying it's a good start and hopefully it will get better from here out mostly.

Finals start next week. We're reviewing in my course tonight, next week they've got the time to study (preferably my course) while I write the final exam. I'll make sure there's no reason they shouldn't at least pass, but I might throw in a few zingers to weed out the people who were really paying attention and taking the class seriously from those lesser mortals who merely showed up. (Hey, it's not an automatic "A" but everyone's probably going to end up with at least a high B average in a three credit course so I don't want to hear any bitching, OK?)

We didn't do the dyeing of eggs or hunting for same as johnny neither knows nor cares about the easter bunny. He was enthused by the small chocolate bugs ( 2 ladybugs, 2 bees, and 2 beetles) and the row of mini chocolate bunnies in his basket..but no more enthused than he was by his normal Annie's organic cheddar bunnies.
We took him to his first carnival on Saturday... mostly the reaction to the rides was non-plussed.
He did enjoy his daddy doing the shooting games and winning him a doggie and monkey.
He got to be grown up boy for 55 min and go to the church nursery with Keira ( family friend's 13 year old daughter whom Johnny adores) and no mommy or daddy ( I ,of course, white knuckled it the whole time waiting for the pager to ring...but he did fine with his first non Nana or Auntie Cack play without the parents time.
I am really pleased that he can play and be with other people ...and at the same time wishing I could just keep him with us forever.

Tired. Mini-conference today from 9-4 for service track presentations and then I'm done with it. 20+ hours of volunteer time (I did almost 30 trying to make sure I got at least 20 in), a 3-5 page paper, several meetings, and now this. Just so 10% of my test average would be shifted over because it would help my overall average.
I could have spent the time studying.
But I probably would have still failed 2/3 exams, and only squeaked through the third one.
Plus: she's apparently got a wonky weighting system and a slight curve.

If I went through this entire semester suffering all the stress and frustration of not just thinking but knowing (knowing I tell you, after being told by email) that I was failing, only to get a B.... I am so channeling Chuck Norris, or borrowing HK's feathery minions of doom or something.
I'd have to at least kick her in the shin, because waiting for Karmic payback just wouldn't be satisfying.
(If I ever go completely off the rails I'd make"Scary Willow" look like a piker.)

So: sushi and coffee for breakfast, bringing a thermos of coffee with because we're responsible for our own snacks/drinks/etc and they're feeding us pizza for lunch.. lucky lucky us. Then it's off to the "conference". Whoop-de-fucking-do.

(Don't mind me, I'm just cranky because it's A BEAUTIFUL DAY THAT I COULD BE SPENDING WITH MY FAMILY OR STUDYING FOR FINALS NEXT WEEK OR BOTH.)

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Baby once again sick. This time much worse. 102.4 fever that is not breaking without tylenol every 4-6 hours. He's throwing up and miserably in pain. NV is taking him to the doctor this morning.
At least I figured out the source. Both times he's gotten sick it was within 24 hours of playing with some kids whose parents are questionably hygiened. They occasionally come to the paintball field. There's no other common activity, interaction or, location between the two and both times he's had the exact same symptoms following the same progression. This time severity is increased, but it's still the same in terms of contact, 24 hrs later listless and uncomfortable and not sleeping, 48 hours fever and vomiting.

(Slings a Sling down the bar like it's never been slung.)

Dessert at my aunt's for my father tonight. It's his birthday. We're headed over. Hopefully things go schmooth.
(long story involving Dramatis familias, the details will be spared)

Tomorrow the race to the finals finish line begins. I have all weekend to study for math, but almost no time for three courses I need to work on most. Can I move my weekend between Wed and Thur, or even Thur and Fri please?

Hope the peanut's better now MsA.

How's things with you BC1? (Hmm.. sounds like "busy one" in my head..)

Ah finals...
If it makes you feel better Rosie, teachers dread it as much as you do. First you have to write the stupid final, then spend hours and hours of your life reading everyone's answers and getting irritated when some of your better students half ass their way though ...sometimes you get the pleasant surprise of a student you though wasn't paying attention who pulls out gold:) Then there's entering the grades, handing them back, and teh inevitable fussing and wailing...
But I'm sure you'll do very well:) You is super super wiley coyote super genius:)

Peanut is ...fair to middling. NV and I are near death with exhaustion of having gotten no sleep for days

Oh, I know. I get BOTH ends of the finals spectrum.

Four more to take and one to give.

I hope they don't take the whole two hours, because that goes until 9:30pm and I want to grade them and enter the grades and calculate the final average and submit it ASAP and be DONE with this semester. (Other than waiting for my own grades to be released so I can see if I need to re-take GenChem2 for a C or better.)

sigh.

I'm sorry the punkin's poorly. Any official "what he's got", or is it a rule-out kind of thing? I hope whatever it is stops soon. Taking care of him in shifts probably isn't feasible.. but if you could get a third person in on it you might at least be able to coordinate naps. Not that I can volunteer, mind you.

Let's all raise a glass to sleep and health and the end of testing!

(adding ice to the blender)

I got a new job today! I was surplused from my current school (budget cuts), but landed a high school library in town today.

I am very relieved.

Anyone want something blended and frothy? I'll mix it right up, and it's on me.
