Just the other day the kids were playing upstairs at the end of the workday. My husband and I were talking, when we realised they were singing.

What were they singing? The 25-minute version of what they think the "Hero of Canton" sounds like. It was too long and too rambling to catch any of it, but OMG was it funny to hear. Wonderful!

Today, our 4-year old son is strutting around in a Wash-like print shirt but demanding to be called Jayne.

I love my kids!

Cheers,
Annik

LoL! That is too funny! My just-turned-5-year-old-last-weekend also wants to be called Jayne. Perhaps the younger kids can relate to Jayne easier than the other characters.

My oldest, 9 today, is always Mal. But my oldest is the leader of my 3 boys, so that one's easy to peg. The middle son, 7, wants to be Simon. Haven't figured out why yet, but I'm hoping it's because he's the smartest.

LOL! Our eldest (6-years old) likes to be known as Kaylee. She also wants to be a genius with engines, although she's already well on her way to knowing a good chunk of human anatomy and physiology, LOL!

Kids and Firefly! I love it! Teach 'em to appreciate quality while they're young!

As a teacher, I think I can supply some insight into your sons' favorites.

The youngest likes Jayne, because Jayne is basically a small child: he thinks he's the center of the 'verse because he hasn't reached the stage of development where he understands that other people have feelings that matter. He says whatever comes to mind, so he often steps on people's feelings, but that doesn't mean he doesn't care about them. (i.e., Kaylee in Serenity) He's impulsive, and that sometimes gets him in trouble over his head before he realizes what's happening, but he responds to having an authority figure who's strong enough to keep him in line and rescue him when he needs it. (Ariel)

I have the feeling that your middle son likes Simon because middle children often develop a keener sense of relationship from dealing with their older and younger siblings. Simon's defining characteristic is his love for his sister, and the fact that he'll do anything for her. Your son may respond to both sides of that relationship, seeing himself as the big brother who heroically takes care of the youngest, and imagining being taken care of by the oldest.

Also, middle kids often feel a little left out: too old for babying, too young for the responsibilities and privileges of the older kids. Simon is often the odd man out on Serenity. He can't fight, flirt, tell funny stories, etc. He often doesn't understand the people around him, but on the other hand, he's the master of the infirmary, and shows potential in crime. (Ariel) He struggles, but ultimately gains respect for his intelligence and medical skill. Your middle son may respond to the idea of being recognized for his own individuality, and empathize with Simon's feelings of being a fish out out water.

Your oldest, besides being a leader himself, may also like Mal because oldest children often feel closer to authority figures. They have the experience of being the sole focus of their parent's authority, and they sometimes get annoyed watching their less mature siblings struggle with rules and responsibilities which the oldest has already internalized.

Anyway, that's more than enough pop psychology for one post, don't you think?

Kids are interesting aren't they? And I like you pop analysis, could be some truth in what you say. I'll have to pay more attention next time they play 'Firefly' and see if I can pick up on how closely they play the part and see if I can match it to what you've explained.
