I was watching objects in space the other day and noticed that the scene where Inara and Mal talk about her leaving is in it. Even though it says in the extras that this scene was deleted because it no longer had no relevence was wondering if anybody knew why?

The scene in the DVD episode itself was how it was originally written and filmed. It refers to Inara telling Mal in Heart of Gold that she's leaving. But as TETHYS said, HoG never aired. They knew that they were going to air OiS even though HoG didn't air. This meant that her conversation with Mal would not make any sense. So they reshot that part to remove the fact that shes leaving and wrote it to suggest that shes getting to a point where she may leave.

Since all the episodes are on the DVD, and HoG comes first, the new version wasn't needed on the DVD and the original version was put back in. This is how Joss wanted it. The aired version is included as a 'deleted' scene for those that want to see both versions (or whatever reason it gave).

Did anyone else notice that the deleted scene lacked the sound of the ocean? I loved that scene in the DVD version - it hinted at the sexual tension between Mal and Inara by echoing the pounding waves River heard when she saw Wash and Zoe. The deleted scene, on the other hand, just kinda left me cold. Did it really air like that?

I would have liked some of the other deleted scenes included within the episodes themselves, rather than just as an extra (especially the scenes from Our Mrs. Reynolds). Or at least the option to play the entire episode with the extra scenes.
