Let's examine the similarities.

Serena had an illness, and was not going to live that long.
Inara had an illness, and was not going to live that long.

Apollo had been disillusioned by the realities of the war he'd lost so much in.
Mal had been disillusioned by the realities of the war he'd lost so much in.

Galactica had so many frackin' cuss words.
Firefly had so many ruttin' cuss words.

Adama was a true man of wisdom.
Sheppard Book was a true man of wisdom.

Galactica had a Socialator.
Firefly had a Companion.

Starbuck could be a loose cannon.
Jayne was always a loose cannon.

Galactica had dramatic sound in space.
Firefly... okay, that's where it breaks down for me here.

Thoughts?

Firefly mixes extraordinarily dark situations with humor.

Battlestar Galactica mixes extraordinarily dark situations with... more extraordinarily dark situations.

LOL, that the new one you're talkin' about I conjure.

I was referring to the 1978-79 series.

Did they use frak a lot in the original? That was what threw me!

I bet Kaylee would love a daggitt.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I give you points on the similarities you point out Chris, but Firefly's theme was far darker than that of the original Galactica.

In watching the original Galactica, it is never really driven home that the situation of the fleet is really all that perilous, not as they did in the newer version. Firefly by comparison had a constant undertone of living on the edge.

True, the original Galactica was played for space adventure, but remember, whole worlds wiped out, Apollo lost a mother, a brother, and a fews eps in, a Wife.

Mainly, because Joss is roughly my age, I'm betting that BSG heavily influenced his creation of Firefly, as did Star Wars, obviously.

Was Serena's illness a laser blast?

No, she had solium poisoning. But they dropped it when it went to series as opposed to a string of TV movies as originally planned. THEN Ms. Seymour told them that she had no plans to do any weekly series.
So they killed her a different way.

Thanks Dr. C. I forgot about all that felgercarb with Ms. Seymour. I was devasted at her departure, and never got over it. Neither did the series.

I really felt the series jump back for me in the last ep, "Hand of God." Sheba finally shined in that one. Very differently than Serina, but she really endeared herself to me in that one.
