CLANDESTINY

Hey, everyone. New Meetup coming, time for a new thread.

I have to admit I'm not thrilled about the venue choices that we've been given by Meetup.com this time around. I also have to admit that I'd love to nominate a new place, but I'm not especially crazy about the idea that I have to buy a Meetup Plus membership to do it.

Wolf's Bay P.S. Restaurant, where we held our inaugural Meetup, is on the ballot again, and so far five members, including me, have voted for it.

Here's my suggestion:

I recommend that all members planning on attending the Sept. 14 do go ahead and cast your vote for Wolf's Bay, as we have. It's a nice enough place, not crowded on a Saturday afternoon, and it is, at least, a known quantity.

Once we assemble at Wolf's Bay, I suggest that we then discuss whether we want to continue our Meetups outside of the influence of Meetup.com -- in other words, post messages here to decide to meet wherever the hell we like, whenever the hell we like. We can also exchange email addresses, once there, to make it easier to keep track of future hangs without having to go through the Meetup website.

Thoughts? Alternate suggestions? The floor is open.

I'll be glad to, TP... as long as you don't call me "my dear" anymore. After all, we haven't been properly introduced...

Haken --

Is it possible to update all posts in this thread so that the thread title reads SEPTEMBER 4, not SEPTEMBER 15?

Thanks,

PLEASE NOTE CORRECTION:

The original title of this thread was NEW YORK FIREFLY MEETUP-SEPTEMBER 15.

That information is incorrect, and the result of a brain freeze for which I deeply apologize.

The correct date is Saturday, September 4 at 2:00 pm. Repeat, Saturday, September 4, not Sept. 15.

It's awful silly to have to pay for what we can essentially do here. And FFF.net is much more navigable! Navigateable? Easy to click around.

Anywho, what we could do is create a mailing list for everyone interested in the NYC meetups on YahooGroups. It's really easy, and we could always put the link in FFF.net threads as the meets come up. That way we'll have a big list of people and we can e-mail back and forth where we would like to meet. And if we make the YahooGroups mailing list public on their site, even more people could come.

I suppose we can discuss a mailing list with everyone that shows up on Sept. 4. That's in 2 weeks, people. Mark yer calendars!

so how about a Cosi cafe? there's one in the penn station area:

498 Seventh Ave
(on 7th Ave between 36th & 37th St)
New York, NY 10018
phone: 212.947.1005
fax: 212.947.1065

if you are not familiar with the chain, these are nice cafes where you can get coffee, tea, even smores!

Is everyone here over 21 years of age?
If so, I propose we all meet at The Peculiar Pub on Bleecker Street...

I thought (and sneakily bumping) to remind everyone to take a gander at the right hand side of the main FFF.net page under "Browncoat Events." There you will see a thread Clandestiny (the host) started for the Meetup. Just in case anyone needs more info.

And thanks to the ever-diligent RhymePhile for reminding everyone in my absence, with a bump.

Folks, the time will shortly come when we either have to decide for certain that we're meeting up at Wolf's Bay again this time, or whether we're going to choose a different venue.

So here we go again with the suggestions:

I will give us, say, one (1) week from today to all vote on whether we are going to stay at the venue previously announced, or choose a new one. I will then make a final announcement based on the response I get, and that'll be our September 4 Meetup place. We can always choose a new one for next time when we all get together.

So. The nominations are:

Wolf's Bay P.S. Restaurant
32 West 38th St.

Cosi Sandwich Bar
498 Seventh Ave
(on 7th Ave between 36th & 37th St)

The Peculier Pub
145 Bleecker Street

All votes must be posted in this forum by August 24, 2004 at 11:59 PM, Eastern Standard Time. If we have not come up with a clear winner by then, I will make the final determination. The final venue will be posted both here and on the Event Board.

Decision of the judges is final. No shirt, no shoes, no service. No matter where you go, there you are. And Koala bears smell like cough drops.

In case anyone cares, the Peculiar Pub on Bleecker in NYC has over 300 beers from around the world...

Whoa, good beer selection...

Does the Peculiar Pub sell food, too?

Either way, I am leaning toward the pub idea, but I am irish and german, so that's no surprise. Cosi is also okay with me.

As someone who attended the meetup at Wolf's, I would recommend going someplace else. I'm really not sure they could comfortably accomodate us and the food wasn't that great.

My only real concern with the pub is - as the Hat alluded to - if there are any under-21 browncoats that won't be able to go to a bar for the meetup.

Did anyone ever check out the place that Unovis recommended?

Okay, I vote for the Wolf restaurant, since many of us on the Meetup site already did, and it would just be simpler that way. I say we meet there, stick it out (even if it does have so-so food) and look forward to the next meet and plan ahead for that one. The Wolf's Bay is centrally located, and since this meetup is happening in 2 weeks and for many of us it's our first time, I'd vote on making it as easy as possible.

When we plan for the next one, (as I already mentioned to Clandestiny), maybe we can find a cool dim sum place in Chinatown!

Just found this thread this morning!

If we have to go with the choices offered (can I repeat the Sha-Sha?) then I vote for the Peculiar. Wolf's Bay/PS had bad food and inadequate seating.

Also think that moving this off the meetup board is a sound idea, and that setting up a Yahoo group would be great. The message boards are good for alerting more people to the meetings, so notices could be posted, but having info sent via email is a lot more convenient than having to search two or three boards for information.

Thanks to Clandestiny for all his work, too.

Anyone ever been to Connolly's, the one off of Times Square? It's a very nice Irish pub, drinks, reasonable food, and it's fairly roomy. It's right around the corner from the Swatch store. I dunno, just another option while bumping at the same time.
