As I posted on the OB:

Just spontaneously starting collecting news on MI-5 today and came across all kinds of stuff.

1. BBC is producing the third season and it starts airing in the UK in "early autumn 2004." There's nothing on the A&E site about the new season, although thefutoncritic.com reported A&E has the show on its Q1 2005 sked. :-( A fan post on the A&E site puts the first UK broadcast at Sept. 6. Who knows?

Quote from futoncritic based on A&E PR:
MI-5 - The show's 10-episode third season, which sees the addition of new cast members Rupert Penry-Jones and Olga Sosnovska, is set to roll out during the first quarter of 2005.

2. Another site, called thecustardtv, says a fourth season has already been commissioned before the third has even started! Go here:

http://www.thecustard.tv/thecrumble.html

3. DVD of the second season will be available from BBC in the UK on Aug. 26 and Sept. 20 from Amazon.co.uk. Again, a fan post quoting BBC, says the S3 DVD will follow soon after the BBC broadcasts, roughly in November.

So we on the western side of the Atlantic will be a TV season and two DVD seasons behind. Lovely.

Well, you could invest in a region-free DVD player and shell out the big bucks to order from Amazon UK. It's an option if you're a super fan.

I gave this a chance when it first started (and watched the ASH ep) but it was a bit crap really.

If you watched it on A&E, the problem with the narrative jumps and confusions, if you had any, might have to do with the fact A&E cut about 15 mins out of every one-hour BBC ep for the commercials. I know I was bothered by something about the shows and couldn't figure it out until I watched the DVDs and discovered the shows are much smoother going and better on disc. You might be able to rent the discs at fine video outlets.

If you didn't like the ep you saw, how come?

I'm in Scotland - I watched it BBC first run. I just found it very dry - wooden characters, bland plot. UK shows never seem capable of providing any decent sort of action.

Well its about time. I was beginning to wonder what had happened to it, it's been gone for such a while. I love this show, its definatley one of the better BBC productions over the last couple of year, that and State of Play. And I wanna know how theyre gonna resolve that last episode. Cliffhangers, I hate them.

That's are revenge for West Wing (1 season behind on DVD, one season behind on satellite and cable, and dead in the water after season 3 for those without).

Keely Hawes is out of season 3 of Spooks IIRC - shame because there was a really good dynamic that the show had. I originally couldn't stand the guy that plays Harry, but once you get used to the swallowing of the scenery, never mind the chewing, he's a highlight of the show.

I thought Spooks did a good job of melding the UK drama style with the faster paced US elements - something I've noticed the BBC doing a fair bit recently - whatever that Cold Case drama was called for example, and Messiah is so cinematically operatic its not true (I'm not sure that's a good thing, but I will give it that it makes for great trailers)

Never really got into Spooks.

The Cold Case drama you speak of is called Waking The Dead and remains the highlight of my week (except for the shocking developments in last Monday's episode) featuring a stellar cast but many may find it's lack of gun play and car chases a little off-putting.

Messiah has also been a good break from the normal humdrum. It's a shame that there is no series of them just a couple of one offs. Still, number three sometime in the next couple of months! Yay!

I'm still championing Jonathan Creek for its blend of comedy and drama, fantastic cast and the odd one or two twists that I havn't been able to work out. Alright, the last series went downhill with the sad departure of Caroline Quentin (Maddie) but it was still enjoyable.

From the other side of the pond....Well just about the only crime series I watch is Without A Trace which I do happen to like, far better than the overrated CSI.

That's the one - mind freeze for a second. Trevor Eve is an excellent actor, and you're right about the cast; it just seems to me that it is almost a carbon copy of the set up of CSI.

Waking the Dead began on 04-Sep-2000
CSI began on 06-Oct-2000

It's official - CSI ripped off Waking the Dead! ;)

I would disagree with that statement entirely.

Waking the Dead places far more focus onto it's characters. CSI focusses on the actual crime more.

My biggest problem with CSI is that it is all over too quickly. There is very little background to any of the characters, their motives are never fully explored and the show just seems to always be rushed.

Waking The Dead sometimes has had the opposite problem in that it is filling a two hour slot each week which on the rare occasion I feel it has struggled to achieve.

But I must admit I find this to be the problem with most American shows. They tie things up too quickly because they are restricted to a running time of around 45 minutes due to commercial breaks and feel hurried often leaving me with a unfulfilled feeling.

This was something I feel happened in Series 6 of Red Dwarf, there would be 20-25 minutes of the story which would be wrapped up in the last 2 or 3 minutes by having Kryten explain everything away.

Gorammit! I demand fulfillment!!!!!!

DS Mel Silver.....you shall be missed!

Just picked up series two about a month ago in Australia. The only extra's are some deleted scenes, but when you check out the BBC website it's mention of commentary and actor extra's. Which might refer to season 1 on DVD.
Its so great to finally found out what happened to ep1 season 2 which i missed last year so i finally caught up.
waiting for season 3 to be shown in Australia hopefully after the olympics are over

My bad - should have made clear I have caught precisely about 1 hour of Waking the Dead over all the episodes; when I say it seems to be like CSI its the way its a team set up - from your quotes it seems it goes into the character background as opposed to CSI.

I actually like CSI for the reason that it is almost entirely plot driven, much like Law and Order - in the main I'll go for a character piece over plot, but for sheer escapism the CSI episodes allow you to just watch them in whatever order and leave after 45-50 minutes. Its shallow, but its well done shallow.
