I was rewatching Out of Gas last night, and it struck me that the scene where Mal introduces Zoey to Serenity kinda mirrors what happened to the show.

Hopefully I won't get sent to that "special level of hell" for daring to rewrite this classic episode.

-------------------------

Right after Joss shows the pilot episode to the Fox network executives.

Joss: Well?

Fox: You expect us to pay money for this? On purpose?

Joss: What? Come on, seriously. Whaddya think?

Fox: Honestly, I think we've been robbed.

Joss: Robbed? What? No. What do you mean?

Fox: It's a piece of fei-oo.

Joss: Fei-oo? Okay. She won't be winning any Emmys anytime soon, but she is solid. Show like this, be with ya 'til the day you die.

Fox: 'Cause it's a Nielsen deathtrap.

Joss: That's not... you are very much lacking in imagination.

Fox: I imagine that's so.

Joss: C'mon. You ain't even seen most of it. I'll show you the rest. And try to see past what she is, and on to what she can be.

Fox: What's that?

Joss: Freedom, is what.

Fox: No, I meant what's that?

Joss: Oh, yeah. Just ignore it. I think some footage of my Happy Dancing was accidentally left on the tape.

--------------------------------

After the show is canceled, Joss and Chris Buchanan talk about turning Firefly into a movie.

Joss: I tell ya, Chris, we find ourselves a studio that believes in us and is willing to back up their words of support with a few bucks. Rebuild the sets. Hire a few new actors. Maybe even a high-middle writer and director. Live like real people. Small and utterly devoted cast and crew, them as feel the need to be free. Make movies as they come, and we'll never be under the heel of nobody ever again. No matter how long the arm of the Fox network might get, we'll just get ourselves a little further.

Chris: Get her built again?

Joss: Yeah.

Chris: So not built now?

Joss: Not so much. Nathan just told me that Fox tore the sets down.

Chris: Ah.

Joss: But we will. I already know what I'm gonna call the movie. Got a named all picked out...

--------

Forget about Star Wars III : Return of the Bratty Anakin, go see Serenity instead. In theatres April 22th, 2004. Firefly DVD: 5 star rating and over 1000 reviews at Amazon.

You can't the sky away from me...

Just a minor note/nitpick. The studio was behind the show. They kept the sets up a lot longer than they would have for another show. This gave time for Joss to try to get the show on another network. With no takers, they had to tear down the sets because it would have been too expensive to keep them up or to store them compared to rebuilding them.

Fox, the network, is not the company that made the show, they only aired it. 20th Century Fox Television, the studio, is the company that made the show.

SHINY

That was awesome!!! Ruttin' HIGH-larious!

(oh, and RHUTTNER is right -- the studio supported Joss, Tim, and company all the way; they were the ones who got the DVDs made. Tim always talks about them as "20th" to distinguish the good studio from the bad "Fox" network)

Jayne, your mouth is talkin. Might want to look into that.

YT

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

Shiny!

And agreed on the seeing Serenity instead. I'm going to see Serenity opening night. Then I'm going to see it again on Star Wars opening night, just to show them! Won't be seeing ep 3 until it's been out awhile.

Keep flying

Edited the orginal post to differentiate between the network and studio.

I wonder why 20th century fox was willing to finance the production of the DVD, but not film.

Thats acutally a very good question and one that I've wondered about myself.

There are some parts of TV and Movie production that I'm not compeltly sure of, but from what I know the DVDs were done by yet another Fox- 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

So all together there are 3 Fox companies that have had some part of bringing Firefly to us:

1. 20th Century Fox Television - the studio that made the show
2. Fox Network - the network that aired it in the US and is responsible for killing it
3. 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment - the company that put out the DVDs

If Fox would have made the film instead of Universal then yet another company would be involved - 20th Century Fox (the movie company).

Not sure why they would not have been interested in making the film. From what I've heard, Universal really wants to work with Joss. So maybe they offered 20th Century Fox Television a deal for the rights to the film and maybe 20th Century Fox wasn't interested enough to start a bidding war. Also 20th Century Fox doesn't seem to have a good track record with Joss so maybe they weren't interested just by his name being involved. Just a thought.
